Questions & Answers

I replaced my springs with the SL730 30". 4 total. 2 on each side. Now with the rain, the wood door is heavy and the doo

r only opens and stays open half way. What should I get? Shorter springs than 30"? Or do they make heavier springs?
Asked by: Peter
1. Springs should be fully compressed when door is open, adjust as needed; 2. Waterproof door.

Garage door springs

Wooden door.springs.How do I determine replacement size?No color markings
Asked by: Steve
I realize your question was a while ago so I am not sure if you still need an answer, but maybe this will help someone else. You should call the spring manufacturer or hire a garage door person, but springs are set to lift fluidly certain weights. I was told by the manufacturer if you don't know what spring was originally used, you are suppose to weigh the garage door. I had one garage door that used 2 springs on each side. When one broke, the person who was going to come out to install said it was best to replace all 4 at the same time. Only one still had its information on it so I replaced all 4 with that spring. It turned out that it must have been a combination of 2 different springs as now my garage door springs are too strong and I have be careful when opening the door as it springs open with a fair amount of force as I open it and I have to use a little strength to close it. The installer said I could could continue to use these springs as this was a manual door for a storage garage, but if I had a motorized system I would have needed to replace at least 2 of them (1 on each side) so that their pull combined with the other two springs was in balance with the door's weight. I don't know how to exactly weigh a garage door (that is why I suggest hiring someone who has done this before, though I suspect there are videos on the Internet) but that will tell you what springs you need on each side. The person who is weighing the door should know or if you want to replace the springs yourself, you can call them manufacturer and tell them the weight of your door and they can tell you the spring you need.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from NOT THE CORRECT SIZE I ordered these garage springs thinking they would be the Holmes SL730C springs like the description says, but when they arrived they were SL730 which is too small for what I needed. When I called The Home Depot, the person in charge of garage accessories told me that this order would have been fine. I’m very disappointed. Be aware of this before ordering.
