Questions & Answers

Is the guard large enough on this trimmer? It seems kind of skimpy in comparison.

Asked by: TMan
It may seem small, but after trimming my 1/4 acre hillside I was covered with substantially less debris than my old curved shaft Homelite. I think it's adequate.

Trimmer ok for 1 + acre property

Some trimmers out there are not rated for larger properties. Can this trimmer handle a 1+ acre property with lots of fence line? Second question. How does this trimmer handle chain link fences?
Asked by: mvoosen
I use it on almost 4 acres and it's working for me. With regard to chain link fences. Just like any trimmer don't get right up on any object and use a good quality line. It should handle up to .095. I typically use no less than .080.

2 Cycle 21.2 cc Straight Shaft Gas Trimmer is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 4608.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Can not edge upside down without it dieing. I bought this unit only two days ago. On my second yard the gas tank was about half full and when i started edging upside down along the sidewalk, the trimmer would die after a minute. After researching online, I have discovered that this is a common problem and the only thing you can do about it is to make sure the tank is full of gas. Not a good answer the problem. I owned this same trimmer i has about five years ago and got rid of it for these same problems. I figured that Echo would have fixed this problem. NOPE!! Taking it back to HOME DEPOT tomorrow. Not going to deal with this every yard we mow. I will stick to the Hasqvarna or Stihl trimmers. I like the trimmer head and the handle feel. The stop switch is not momentary which is a down fall. Starts pretty easy. Edging upside down or sideways is very big for me. For thr price the Echo only has 21.2 cc compared to the Harqvarna 27 cc trimmer for the same $199 price. I own one of the Harqvarnas and you can feel the difference in power.

Since it was winter, I used it 1x until spring. The second time I used it, it began to bog down when cutting grass. Just light Saint Augustine grass. I found on YouTube that Echo has placed a cap over the fuel mixture set screw on the carburetor. This doesn't allow for adjustment of fuel mixture that different altitudes require or when it's cold vs. hot. The solution commercial lawn services use is to drill out this copper cap to gain access to the set screw below it. I took the trimmer back to Home Depot Rental tools service and they put a liquid mechanic solution in the fuel tank and told me to let it set for a few days. It didn't change anything. They also told me that Echo doesn't warranty the carburetor. I paid $259 plus tax for a useless trimmer and Home Depot wants to charge me to fix it or send it to the manufacturer and then charge me again if they assess they want to charge me. What I think is, that echo has different settings on carbuerators for higher altitude states vs lower southern states. They must have gotten a pallet of trimmers meant for higher altitude states mixed up with those intended for lower southern states.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Trimmer ive ever owned I'm not sure why a few people had such problems with this machine. I have a small lawn care business, I have bought plenty of ryobi's, I have 4 to be exact and not one of them is running. Bought my first echo 2 years ago and is now 1 of the 3 I own. These trimmers will be running off and on for 8 hours a day 3-5 days a week, always starts and never any problems. The only problem i do run into is the primer bulbs drying out and cracking but its a .60cent fix. For those that had problems with feeding the line, its actually a quick feed, you shouldn't have to take it apart to feed it. You need to pull out a strand of line 6-8', feed the ends through the holes then start turning the bump feed clockwise and the string should start winding up. Once you get it wound up it should be a loop of string across the head of the trimmer. cut it in half and your ready to do work. Any other problems you may have, resort back to the owners manual, it will tell you all you need to know. thanks

After using this yesterday... I must say that it is by far, the best weed eater I have ever owned. I've always bought the cheapest I could find and then trashed it when it broke. This time I decided to get a decent machine in hopes that it would help this old man get the work done. Man! This thing is a "BEAST"! It was ready to "rock and roll"! I cleaned up a 200 ft. long creek bed behind our house in 1 hour and 15 minutes. It usually took me about 3 hours before! I only had to bump the line feeder twice and had 1/3 of a tank of gas left. Amazing! The I did the rest of the weed eating in record time as well. If you need a weed eater... this is the ticket! It's also very light and well balanced. Quieter than most too. ECHO model SRM-225, $199.00 at Home Depot. 3,104 reviews with 2,459 being 5 stars! And, I'm about to add another one! I can't believe I'm saying this... but, I actually enjoyed weed eating yesterday, for the first time in my 63 years!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Trimmer I have my own lawn business and I love this trimmer. I've had it for over a year now. It has lots of power and it is well made. You can knock down thick grass and light brush with ease or be precise when edging sidewalks. It has a good stable feel to it and I really like the handle. I also love the head on this trimmer. It has an easy bump feed, a wide bottom, seems like it won't wear out easily and it is very easy for me to put new string in it. Three complaints: when edging sidewalks with the trimmer tilted to the left, you have to keep at least half a tank of gas in it or else it will die. Also the gas tank is in a weird position so in order for me to fully fill it I have to hold the trimmer up. Lastly they definitely could have put a bigger grass guard on this. The one it comes with helps a lot but it is too small. Overall I love this trimmer and it is well built. I picked it over the husqvarna in the same model because of ease of use (handle, trigger, head, choke) and build quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The ECHO SRM-225 is an excellent line trimmer. It is... The ECHO SRM-225 is an excellent line trimmer. It is easy to start. It idles smoothly. Follow the Quick Start Guide and you will not have difficulty starting the trimmer when it is cold. Once you hear the trimmer trying to start, move the choke to the OFF position then make one pull to start. This is the same way I start my chainsaws. Restarting the warm trimmer is easy, just turn the switch to the ON position hold the trimmer and make one pull and it will start. I am using the synthetic oil that came with the trimmer and the motor runs cooler and without the exhaust smoke that my old Ryobi trimmer made. To store my trimmer, I hang it horizontally from 2 rubber coater rooks under the shelving in my tool shed. You can use 0.080 “or 0.095” line with this trimmer. One more thing, when trimming near bushes, trees and wire fencing I run the saw at or below 1/2 speed. This helps avoid the trimmer line grabbing the wire mesh. Hope this helps.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I cannot understand the other reviews. Maybe things have changed since then. When I got this prod... I cannot understand the other reviews. Maybe things have changed since then. When I got this product, out of the box, the pull string would not budge. It would not start up. I had to disassemble the whole thing. I used a vice grip to try to turn the pawl like they showed in several youtube videos. Then I discovered that the wipers on the ignition coil, part A411001690n were stuck against theflywheel, part A409001310. They were making deep gouges in the flywheel when I tried to turn the pawl, which was getting scratched up and scarred from my trying to turn it to get this thing going. Finally, I removed the two torx bolts, part V804000070 to raise the ignition coil so that it would allow the flywheel to move. I reassembled it, and the trimmer sprang to life. This was improper assemby at the factory. I would like Echo to replace the parts that were scarred due to this, so that I can have new unscarred parts (the numbers are above). Also, the product should come properly assembled and adjusted- I should not have had to do this. This is pretty poor quality control.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stalls when edging Purchased 2 of the srm 225s. Both stalled when turning to edge if less than full tank of gas. Store I purchased at tried for several weeks to fix issue but could not. Finally bought a Stihl fs 56. More power, easier start, and doesn't stall when edging. Don't be fooled like I was with all the great ratings and reviews for this echo weed eater.
