Questions & Answers

Can I put a smaller bar and chain on this saw

Asked by: Espodio456
ECHO's CS-500P will come standard with a 20" bar/chain. However, this model can accept a 16" and 18" bar/chain.

Warranty Valid

The warranty document states that the warranty is only good if purchased from an authorized dealer. Is home depot an authorized dealer?
Asked by: bigtires001
Yes, if the product is new (not reconditioned or previously owned) and purchased from Home Depot or an independent ECHO dealer, warranty would be valid. The warranty is 5 years for residential use and 2 years for commercial use.

Customer Reviews

20 in. 50.2cc Gas Chainsaw is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 35.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light, powerful, dependable I have owned a real Mccullough, Husqvarnas, Stihls and now use Echo saws exclusively. I have 5 wooded acres and added the CS 500P to my Echo CS 400 (great little saw) and my bigger CS 590 so now I have 40cc, 50cc and 60cc Echos. My Echos start easy, cold or warm, are all day dependable and have a great warranty. The 500P is very light for a 50cc saw, starts and runs great and with a good quality full chisel chain it's a great cutting saw that will cut very close to any other brand. Use good quality fuel, keep the air filter clean and your chain sharp and you will be totally satisfied with the 500P!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 500p very good saw Purchased the Echo 500p because I have probmems with my Sthil 029. I have been cutting large diameter Ash. And have had issues with the 029. The 500p has great power and starts like Echo saws have for decades Easy to start. I am currently using a Echo 352, a Sthil 029 and the Echo 500p. I recommend the 500p highly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than Stihl I had purchased a stihl saw at first and long story short it was junk, fell apart on me after 5 minutes of use due to an engineering defect and Sthil could not have cared less, I had to argue with Westlake ace to return it. I was looking for a real saw and Echo had good reviews and great warranty so I went to my local Orscheln hardware store to check them out and this saw was on clearance for 299.00! What a steal for this price, it is a beast of a saw, controls are way better than stihl, I couldn't be happier. Pro grade saw, homeowner price, best warranty = easy decision

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good saw I did at last get to try my new saw.I am by far no wood chuck. I have only owned a couple cheaper saws in the past.(2 craftmans,McCulloch) This saw far out performed them. I only cut cotton wood trees which is a soft wood but with a twenty inch bar there was no power problems. It is also not over heavy. I did have a little trouble filling the oil without spilling, but the is with most saws. Wish they would change that a little, but I started filling a big soft plastic squirt bottle and filled it that way. Over all it is a great saw for what cutting I do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great chainsaw I chose this saw because of the power to weight ratio. I've had saws that were much heavier that didn't cut near as well. I'm in my 60s and the weight matters more and more evey year. This saw starts easily, cuts like a demon and doesn't wear you out from just trying to hold it up. I'm the proud owner of other Echo products and am well pleased with them. I've owned the other high end brands and believe Echo is just as good or better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best power to weight ratio, best warranty best saw Reading the two negative reviews, tells me they have a screw loose. never seen a saw in the 50cc class that has two dogs from the factory.(guide bars, or something like that he called them). the saw is extremely well balanced with ergonomic design built in. The Air cleaner the other mentioned. holy cow, who would run the saw 30 hours without cleaning the filter!!! not anybody that respects their equipment. my self i cut over 30 cord (90 rick) before i opted to change my filter that's easily cleanable. and then i changed it merely for the start of the new season. The stock bar is an Oregon, it is no less flimsy than the oregon he replaced it with. but if i'm correct the stock oregon bar with Echo painted on it, is Oregons premium bar. I think those fellas didn't know how to care for or maintain (let alone use a saw) so are punishing Echo for merely selling a doo doo brain a saw without giving them a 40 hour class on chainsaw operation and maintenance. if they'd of admitted their in-experience any dealer i could imagine would have given them basic instructions. The owners manuals also define routine maintenance. It'd be a rare occasion that they'd of gotten a lemon Echo, and even a more rare occasion if an Echo dealer didn't go out of their way to fix the problem/s. I have run a lot of saws for a lot of years. This was the single best saw i have ever seen or heard of, i use it to cut down and buck as much as 36" Oaks, it is not under powered, rather amazing. I did mention "was my favorite saw" The new Echo 352, at 8.8 pounds, 34 cc's out performs my solo 39cc and my stihl 42 cc, and nearly keeps up with my echo 500 making it the ultimate dual purpose saw (limbing and bucking). I have to remind my self to switch to the 10.5 pound 500 when i'm done limbing and start bucking, especially on 20 inch trees (I rarely switch saws for 12 and 14" trunks). To tell the difference between the two saws on 12" oak needs to be timed. Even though i do cull out a few jack pines and even some whites most of my cutting is Burr oak, Red oak, white oak and maple. the bur oak is usually twisted and is a bugger to cut and split, but all three of my echo's work like a dream. I also have a 600P, but prefer my 500P, both have the 20 inch bar, and even up to 36" diameter, i rarely fire up the 600 unless I've pinched my bar or ran out of fuel on the 500 with only a few cuts left for the day. The 600P is heavier without enough difference in performance, and is a gas hog compared to the 500. (I'm wanting to try the 590 and the 490 just for shats n grins. ) Echo has stepped up to the plate and given us light wieght extremely powerful, reliable equipment that is professional grade, with a darned good warranty that is honored. (i have to be careful how i say that since i've not needed the warranty honored outside of initial new purchase tuning, like most any saw, hence a reason to buy from a dealer rather than a box store like menards, home depot and the likes there of that don't tune new saws for customers, nor do they repair them on site.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Over two years, forty cords, starts second pull I purchased this saw to complement my Stihl MS 362 and MS 441. I needed something smaller for the limbing work and this saw seemed to fit the bill. What I found was that unless I am in wood too big for a 50cc saw, this thing is amazing. And by too big I am talking red and white oak over 24" diameter. I really like how easy this saw is to start and have no idea why Echo went to the extra expense to install a compression release on the 501P. This engine is a two piston ring engine and while I have never heard of any issues with the one ring Echo engines, I prefer two rings from a heat transfer and engineering efficiency standpoint. I have read the two negative reviews and like one commenter agree that neither of these individuals should be using a chainsaw. I clean my air filter once a day regardless and I think most people who use a saw will do the same. It is obvious the one who went over 30 hours did not bother to read his owner's manual! I have never seen two bumper spikes on anything less than a 60cc saw and if you have to use them to keep your saw straight your chain is not properly sharpened, your bar is uneven, or your rakers aren't properly lowered. A properly sharpened chain with properly filed rakers should run straight with almost no guiding whatsoever. If it isn't there is something wrong. People who cut wood with me love my 500P because it is so light, starts first pull when warmed up, is extremely fuel efficient for a 50cc saw, has loads of power with the narrow kerf chain and could probably handle a 20" bar. I choose not to overload my saws so I use a smaller bar (18") than the max listed. A complaint is the use of "Echo specific" guide bars and chains. These are standard Oregon bars and chains with an Echo label but they are a non-standard number of drive links. I also have no idea why Echo does not sell these saws with the Oregon narrow kerf bars and chains as this technology and the benefits of it has been around for years. I replaced my Echo bar and chain with the Oregon narrow kerf version after wearing out two chains and the difference in cuttingspeed and capability is noticeable. While you can't get a full chisel chain in narrow kerf (yet) the new Oregon 95TXL chain is as close as you are ever going to need and it stays sharp far longer and is easier to file than their LPX/BPX chisel chains. My one real complaint with this saw, and I see Echo is starting to come around to an easier way to change the rim sprocket. In order to change the rim sprocket you have to remove the spark plug, shove a length of rope into the cylinder to lock the piston and then use a wrench to remove the nut holding the washer and rim in place. This is ridiculous on a saw that is designed to be used heavily and therefore sprockets will have to be replaced annually. I see on their 600P and 620P they have gone to a circlip (ring) like Stihl. I'd also like to see them upgrade their air filter to one like they have on their 680 and 800. if Stihl can put an upgraded filter on their MS261 (a 50cc saw), I am sure the Echo engineers could do the same with their 50cc and 60cc saws.
