Questions & Answers

Is the Echo 59.8 a 4 cycle or a 2 cycle gas motor

Asked by: Buddy
All internal combustion powered chainsaws utilize 2 strokers, exclusively. They are rugged, inexpensive, lightweight with a high power to weight ratio, and deliver more consistent power than 4 strokers. Also, 2 strokers can be operated in any position, including upside down for extended periods, without endangering the motor, or imposing excessive wear and tear on the same. All of which are essential for chainsaws. While 4 strokers don't necessarily need to be kept upright at all times while running, operating them upside down for more than short periods, could put the mill in jeopardy, as a result of lubricating oil being forced from the crankcase into the combustion chamber. For those reasons, 2 strokers are necessary for powering chainsaws.

Can 93 octane be used with this chainsaw, or only 89? I'm looking to buy "Echo 32 oz. Red Armor Fuel 50:1 Pre-Mixed Ethanol Free Fuel", which is 93. Thanks!
Asked by: Octane
I always use premium fuel from one of my usual gas stations, and Echo Red Armor 2 stroke oil, which is available from Home Depot. Also, I always add a generous dose of fuel stabilizer, such as StaBil, which can also be picked up from Home Depot.

I live on over 5 acres (mostly wooded) so upgrading to a more capable saw was a long time coming. A few weeks ago a ~26"+ diameter, ~24' long, branch fell from the oldest elm tree on my property, blocking the driveway. This saw was the silver lining. I cannot compare this to my previous saw because it's in a completely different league. I have used higher end consumer saws in the past (stihls and huskies) and this outperforms every single one. Starting is easy and consistent. The air filter design, oversized fuel/oil fill caps, transparent fuel tank, digital ignition, and vibration dampening features are all very well designed (and the features may be as spoiling me a little bit). I can't really emphasize how happy I am with this saw. Based on the performance thus far, combined with the 5 year warranty, I anticipate I'll get my money back from this saw in no time. I reccomend using oregon e70 chains.

Bought this based on performance and value, concerned with its issue of poor starting but figured with premium gas and stabilizer in the oil that it wouldn't be an issue. Does flood easily, make sure to choke until the first firing then release - started the first pull after that for the first 3 months. Next cutting season - I only cut in the fall and winter months - worked fine for a month or so then developed problems with a warm start. Would restart as long as it was within a couple minutes of turning off, anything longer and it wouldn't start - had to let it sit and cool for a half hour. Once the saw hit about a year old it would occasionally have a cold start problem - to the point of I had to take breaks from pulling. Progressed to a problem starting most all the time. Saw performs well when cutting and is comparable to the more expensive options, but this saw is way too finicky with starting, this saw needs to be babied - not a good quality for a chainsaw that wants to be regarded as a workhorse.

This chainsaw was practically impossible to start even using TruFuel. Once it finally got started it would bog down considerably and stall out when attempting to cut through some 16 inch diameter logs. My Ryobi 16 inch chainsaw with a 37cc engine would cut as good or better than this chainsaw. I returned this product ASAP and will never buy another Echo product.

The part they sent did not match what they had originally sent.I called Echo customer service and was told they would send out that part right away. After over a week of waiting I called back and talked to the same person who said he did not remember that conversation. He took all my information and again promised to send it out. He said I would receive it probably Saturday of not then by Monday. I finally got everything working on my on. I used the saw about 5 hours turned it off and it never cranked again. At that point I returned the saw to Home Depot and got a full refund. The part finally came on Tuesday after i had already returned the saw.

I bought this chainsaw to cut up some large cherry trees that came down in a storm. The HD guy recommended the premixed gas for it. I took it home, followed the instructions, and it would not start. I took it back, and the tool rental repair guy took it apart and said the can gas HD recommends is garbage. He said to use ethanol free gas from a local station. He got the saw started after 20 minutes of disassembly and tinkering, but it ran rough. He said it would run smooth on the other gas, and I shouldn't have any issues (that guy was really helpful, and I give him 5 stars). I took it home, and it started the first time on the new gas, but still ran rough. The second time I tried to start it, it was back to not starting. I took it back again, and HD guys couldn't get it to start at all, even with the new gas. I wasted 10 bucks in gas on this saw and ended up returning it. I was hoping to add two of these to my garage (homeowner garage), but am now going to try another orange brand that has been good in the past. Very disappointed in this chainsaw.

I took the plunge and was not disappointed. The saw came fully assembled and the chain tension was properly set right out of the box. First startup was 5 pulls on choke, then one without choke. The saw roared to life and I was off to cut up some downed limbs for the fire pit. Every start was one pull, and it made fast work out of the limbs. I highly recommend this saw. I have owned chainsaws all my life and never had a better first impression. This saw is comparable to the BIG S brand at a much better price! I am particularly impressed by the anti-vibration features. Best so far of any saw I have owned.

After researching for about a month I decided to try the Echo CS-590 for many reasons including all of the positive reviews, larger motor (for its class), and of course the cost. I was pretty excited to get it and get to work. However, I could not get it started at all. I followed the instructions, used the recommended fuel and bar oil. I tried over the course of 3 days to try and get it started. After 3 days I figured I just got a bad unit so I would exchange it. Home Depot was wonderful and easy to work with. Even the guys in the Rental area were unable to get it started. So I exchanged it for another one. When I got it home I got it started on the 3rd pull. Wonderful!! Until I shut it off and took it out to work. It wouldn't start again. I had to go back home without getting any work done. I tried over the next couple days to get it started... nothing. So I took it back and got my money back. Maybe I'm missing something, but I've run chainsaws for over 25 years and I've never had an issue like this. I have a 20 yr old Poulon Pro that starts up on the third pull after sitting for a year but I can't seem to get this one going. I think it probably is a wonderful saw based on everything I've read. I just didn't have good luck with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive Saw I am an experienced, heavy use homeowner. I used another brand for 15+ years and finally decided I was done fighting with my old saw. Echo was not on my list of saws to consider until I read many of these reviews and watched videos of people testing this saw against the competition. This saw is a beast. I have been using the saw for over a year and I am extremely satisfied. One recommendation.....use pre-mixed 50:1 fuel that is ethanol free. I tried using pump gas once and the saw did not react well. Ethanol free fuel will provide top performance.
