Questions & Answers

is their a blade attachment available for this model?

Asked by: john
Yes, but be careful to get an appropriate blade. There's plenty of torque to handle a blade - either saw-tooth or propeller - but make sure not to go too large. The arbor is 7/8" - which means you either get a blade with that size or a 1" blade with an adapter washer.

does it have a saw blade

At one time I had a weed wacker (gas) with a saw blade that coould be attached for trimming branches and stalks. Does this product do that?
Asked by: tom
It does not have it with it but you can get a brush cutter kit for it that will come with the blade strap and other hardware. I think the kit sells for around $50 to $75 if i remember correctly. Here is the part number for that kit 99944200418 from Echos web sight. Hope this helps

With the higher torque how much less of a cutting speed will I get? How dirty if a cut will it make compared to a 21.1c

Asked by: Spenc
Torque is what powers the blade or string thru the stuff you are cutting, not speed so much. The higher torque is achieved by using a lower gear ratio in the gear box at the end of the shaft near the cutter head. This enables the machine to slash thru material at a lower engine RPM than , say, a machine that did not use this lower gear ratio, but would have to be operated at a higher RPM to achieve enough torque to do the same job. The gear box more closely matches the engine's maximum torque output to optimum line velocity at the cutter and trimmer heads, enabling the engine to drive the cutting element more easily at an engine RPM when the engine's output torque is maximum.

How often do you have to grease the drive shaft on the SRM280T ?

Asked by: Dstat
Follow Echo's directions and only grease when needed. If you dip a thin screwdriver into the grease hole (covered with a screw cap) and it comes up dry, it needs grease. If you see the tip of the screwdriver has a drop of grease on it, then it doesn't need greasing. Don't put in too much grease - it takes very little.

Customer Reviews

ECHO 28.1cc Gas 2-Stroke Cycle Straight Shaft Trimmer is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 117.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Cadillac of String Trimmers The SRM-280T is Echo's most expensive professional-level line trimmer and for good reason. It will handle the toughest string trimming jobs easily with plenty of power and torque to spare. There is a reason why this is the string trimmer that you most often see on the trucks of landscapers and lawn care professionals. My unit was delivered quickly and arrived fully assembled - ready to go right out of the box. I filled it up with premix, pushed on the priming bulb the recommended 8 - 10 timers and then pulled on the starter cord with the choke on to get the engine to pop. Two pulls on the cord were all that was required - one more pull on the cord with the choke off and the engine fired right up! The extra power and torque enable the operator to run the engine at a much lower rpm than other trimmers. This not only saves on gas and engine wear & tear, it also reduces wear on the cutting string, which means saving even more money by using less string. Echo's commitment to manufacturing a quality product which incorporates the latest technology coupled with great safety features makes this trimmer well worth the up front investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Workhorse Trimmer This is my second SRM-280. I gave the first away to my daughter. This trimmer runs and runs. I was always buying the ones on sale at my local home center and they seemed to be under powered and would have to run at full speed to get the job done. I asked a local small engine repairman why I see lanwcare pros trimming with their trimmers seemingly at idle while trimming, and I have to have mine at full speed. He said it was the trimmer and pointed me to the SRM -280. It does cost more but it will outlast the others. I have 6 acres with fences, trees and low spots that need a reliable trimmer. That is why I bought my second SRM -280T.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a monster buy one We have 5 acres and a lot of oak trees with little saplings trying to grow around the big trees, lots of weeds, etc. and tall grass. This 280T is a monster, doesn't use a lot of gas, and I went almost 2 1/2 hours without putting line in it, incredible. If you hit something the size of a pencil or smaller, it shreds it, period. I have a metal blade for stuff bigger than a pencil. I use the .105 line and the store bought pre mix fuel.Blow the dust off your wallet and buy one you cheap skate. No, you don't have to ask your wife first just do it. She would spend $400 without asking you, I guarantee it pal.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from We've owned Echo products for many years and have been satisfied, but this last one we purchased ... We've owned Echo products for many years and have been satisfied, but this last one we purchased was a real disappointment. It is poorly made compared to its competition (which we eventually purchased). Complex cumbersome starting procedure is not easy and not reliable. They even indicate this ridiculous start up in their directions. Other Echo trimmers we've owned in the past have always been extremely simple and reliable to start, unlike this one. We ran it for about 5-minutes and then the machine just quit. It wouldn't start at all after that. Checked the gas (good, fresh 50:1 that runs other machines fine), checked the bulb (full), checked the spark plug - it was as dry as a bone. Something either failed or blocked the gas flow, but we didn't want to lug this thing back for repairs when it was brand new! Finally just returned it to home Depot and bought a more reliable trimmer from another manufacturer - which we've been happy with for several weeks now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top Power My 3rd Echo trimmer in 7 years but please read on, this isn't a negative review. I've been in commercial landscape/lawncare for over 25 years and I've used and tried everything out there. I demand quality for my own personal tools. After years of purchasing one-season "throw-away" trimmers I stepped up to the Echo SRM210 in '05. I was skeptical and it didn't have the power of a previously stolen $300+ trimmer but for 5 hard years of use it was utterly unstoppable. Once it got past the warranty it started to get a little finicky but still serviceable. For roughly the same asking price and same 5 year warranty I decided to get an SRM225. Most every componant from the old 210 is interchangeable so I'd have a nice supply of back-up parts should I damage the new 225. For the price, quality, and warranty the 225 is hard to beat. After the first year I considered how hard I'd run the 210 and decided I didn't want to do that to my "new" 225 and started shopping for a larger unit for heavier use. I decided on the SRM280 and I couldn't be happier with my choice. Heavy Duty! Easy starts and absolute power, I've never run (much less owned) a stronger string trimmer. It does weigh more and consume more fuel but those are trade-offs I can easily live with. No need for saw blades or gimmick trimmer heads, raw power cuts through the tough stuff with ease. I'm more than satisfied, I'm impressed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good power, reliability Trimmer has tons of power and really does its job, cuts through just about anything with the trimmer line. The only beef I have with the trimmer is the loss of power when you place it vertical to edge along a lawn. It just doesn't seem designed to handle that position. Other than that it's great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best product ever !!!!!!! I been cutting grass on the side for 10 years now and have been using ECHO products all my life , you can not kill them . I have done put my SRM 280T trimmer in some tall, thick weeds and it cut it like a hot knife threw butter . It cost me around $300 but it’s the best money I ever spent . I have all ECHO products . SRM 280T Trimmer , PE 265 edger and a PB755T blower . ECHO products are extremely reliable when you need them . I live in south Louisiana so I cut grass 9 months out of the year . The few months they sit up , no problem starting them for the first time in February ,I just prime them , choke them and pull maybe 3 times ,but most of the time just 2 times . I worked for a company that cut pipelines , the owner swore STIHL was the best thing since sliced bread NOT!!!!!! STIHL products are too heavy and you have to pull and pull till you blue in the face to start them . I complained about that junk every day . Everybody that ask me what’s a good trimmer , edger or blower I tell them ECHO . I also have a 61” SCAG TURF TIGER best mower I think so everything I Owen is orange lol . But ECHO products are by far the best I have ever used !!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best trimmer ever! Upgraded my SRM-225 because I own a small lawn service. Wow what a difference! Like all my other Echos it starts in no more than 3 pulls, has tons of power while being super efficient, and is so comfortable. I put on a high capacity speed feed head and just trimmed 3 foot tall grass with no bog down and I didn't even get dirty! Stick with the best, stick with Echo!
