Questions & Answers

Does it accept attachments?

There's some confusion about whether this trimmer accepts the echo attachments for hedge trimming etc. According to the manual it does not; however, in some reviews and according to the people at our local Home Depot store, it takes the same attachments as the split-shaft gas model. What's the right answer?
Asked by: DrillDoc
I bought this unit because it supposedly "accepts attachments"... as I have a "universal" pole saw, brush cutter, and hedge clipper. The online and in-store reps for Home Depot "confirmed" this assumption. Unfortunately, IT DOES NOT ACCEPT UNIVERSAL ATTACHMENTS! The female end is too small to accommodate any "universal" attachment.... and the socket that secures the connection is on the opposite side. To add insult to the injury, Echo offers NO ATTACHMENTS for this unit. So, they market a model that adds value because it "accepts attachments" ... but they purposely created an incompatible design for Universal Attachments... and then offer no attachments themselves. Their marketing manager should be fired! Too bad.... because it is a powerful, heavy-duty unit with the largest battery of any on the market. I wonder how many others will also be immediately returned...

Mine keeps turning off, but only on rabbit mode. Does anyone know why?

I have had this string trimmer for a little less than a year. I really like it. Since I have gotten it back out this year, when I run it on high speed mode (rabbit) when I cut any grass at all it simply shuts off. I have to wait 5-10 seconds before I can restart it. This never happened last year, and never happens today when I use the lower speed (turtle) mode. Does anyone know why this is happening? Is my unit defective? Thanks.

I just bought this unit at HD a few weeks ago. It is supposed to be new, with new battery and charger. I did try it with all my attachments that I had with my gasoline PAS 225. It worked with all of these although a little difficult to insert the tools into the power head. I loved the power and torque of the Battery Head. It seemed to have good battery life. I ran it at slow and high speed. From the beginning I had problems with it cutting out with the trimmer and other attachments. I did read about the fix of hitting the battery meter to get it to restart. This was happening every 5" or less. I did not find this workable. I talked to Echo at there service online area. They DENIED that this was a known problem!!!! Their suggestion was for them to send a new battery and maybe charger or to bring it in locally for service. Since this was new and I have a functional gasoline choice to run my tools I choose to return it. Their denial of a problem was disappointing. With this long history they should have fixed this issue. The tool itself was very nice other than this issue. The weight of the tool is basically the same as the gasoline option. I think Echo has work to do on this before I will consider buying again. I was very disappointed to have to return it.

How long does the battery last and is it strong enough to do a good trimming job ?

Asked by: m123n45
Thank you for asking, M123n45. We do not test for a run time on these batteries as it does depend on which unit you are using it with as well as the thickness and kind of material you are trimming.

Is the trigger variable or on/off

Gas trimmers vary their speed by how much you press the trigger, Does this work the same way or is the trigger simply a on/off switch?
Asked by: CMuir
Thank you for asking, CMuir. This string trimmer is equipped with a variable switch that can turn from low speed to a high speed. Since not all gasoline models have this function, you will need to research each model to see if this is a function that is available. Thank you for taking an interest in the ECHO 58-Volt line! I hope this helps! –Keri

I figured I would share my trimmer story and hopefully save some people from spending hours looking over reviews. I had a Black and Decker "Grass Hog" cordless trimmer for more years than I can remember. Old school battery that took a day to charge but it always worked and replacement string was minimal. In the last year or so old reliable started to get a little finicky so I bought a 18V Ryobi hybrid trimmer as a backup. When the old B&D unit bought the farm recently, my backup unit became my starter. I have an average to above average amount of trimming to do each week but nothing to crazy. The Ryobi trimmer is pretty light on power and the automatic line feed was problematic by either not releasing line when needed (edging mode) or releasing too much string (trimmer mode) which in turn would wrap around the head and cause you to stop and fix very often. On top of that the replacement line spools are expensive (3 for $20) and did not contain much string. After two outings with the 18V I realized it was just barely good enough to be a backup. In my hunt for something with more power I was ready to pull the trigger on the Black and Decker LST136 model. My great experiences with my old B&D clouded my judgement as the reviews showed this model had about a 30% failure rate within the first year. Thankfully NOBODY carried this model in their stores and this pause allowed me to rethink what I was doing. On-line purchase only is a red flag in my mind so I continued my search. Search "Best Cordless Trimmers" or something similar and you will get 10 different reviews and nobody seems to identify the same unit as the best one out there. I was ready to pull the trigger a second time for a Milwaukee unit that the local HD said they had in stock. When I arrived none were in stock. Tired of the on-line search effort, I came across the Echo 56V unit that was on display at the same HD. This unit had the features I was looking for: Dual speed, 56V, rapid recharge, bump and feed head and interchangeable equipment (also needed a edger). This unit also came with a 5 year warranty. I walked out the store with the Echo 56V trimmer and edger and put it to use this weekend. Everything worked out of the box and the quality and power of the unit are outstanding. Bump and feed system worked great as did the edger. Used it for about an hour (off and on) on low speed and only consumed one of four bars of available power. The unit is a little heavy but in my mind weight is a direct reflection of quality. If you want something light it is likely made of plastic and wont stand up to the test of time. Replacement battery cost is high (80% of the price of the unit) but that seems to be the industry standard at this point so it does not matter which manufacturer you go with. Moral of my store, if you are looking for a quality cordless trimmer expect to pay > $200 and go with a well established manufacturer. Length of warranty is a good indication of the manufacturers confidence in their product. Anything rated at 40V or greater is likely more than enough power for the typical 1/2 acre or less yard. For me, being able to buy and return (if needed) locally is a plus. The unknown about any cordless trimmer is how long will they make replacement batteries before I am forced to buy something new. Since nobody has that answer, it is a risk you have to take if you want to be free of cords and carburetors. Ask your friends and neighbors what they use and trust your gut.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Durable, Powerful and Works Great I purchased the trimmer 2 years ago and this will be my 3rd season using it. It can handle the tough jobs with no problems. I have 5 acres with a tree line, drainage ditch and fencing. I have used it to clear the ditch and had no problems. The battery runs strong for a good 45min of work time on the high setting. If you want a powerful string trimmer and don't want to deal with a gas engine this is the unit you want. I also bought the blower and it uses the same battery pack/charger which is nice.

Great as a weed eater, but the new model that won't take attachments is better. This will thermal shutdown on pretty much any attachment. The Echo web site says it can run the pruner, but not UL Listed. It CANNOT run the pruner to any usable degree. Throw on the three foot pruner extension and it can't even run it without cutting anything. In all fairness, I bought it to cut weeds and was just hoping the attachment would work. I'm trading it for the newer model and getting the gas power head for my attachments. A few more years of battery technology to go before this is the homeowner tool for someone with some woods.

Overall I really like it. There are a couple of cons though: 1) It's pretty heavy. But it's well balanced and doesn't vibrate like my gas one. 2) I don't care for the trigger, I find it hard to keep fully depressed, nor is it easy to control the power, leaving me to pretty much run at 75 percent, high rabbit setting. 3) Still undecided on the string head. It's easy to load, so that is great, but twice now the string has broke inside the head. It seems that when winding the string can pinch itself, leading to breakage. Hopefully the were just anomalies. Overall though, very happy. Would purchase again.

Had this for nearly a year now and I have to say this is one of the best lawn tool purchases that I made. Battery powered lawn tools is the way to go. Not having to mess with a pull string removes the stress and frustration of yard work. This seems better quality then my Ego lawn mower. I bought the attachment for the edger at the same time (one of the main reasons I went with Echo over the Ego). Everything works perfectly, with more than enough power to get the job done. The battery seems to hold a really good charge. I can't remember the last time I had to recharge it. It is super quite (compared to my old gas motor one) and doesn't get scorching hot (again, like my old gas motor one).

I was looking to recondition the carb on 4 stroke weed eater from another manufacture when I started to read the reviews for this cordless weed eater. Instead I dropped a few gift cards on the Echo Cordless. I help maintain the hiking and biking trails around the area and have always found it a major pain to hike to the trail with a can of gas and the weed eater, not to mention that my old weed eater was nearing end of life so I was constantly fighting to get it started. I was a bit worried that a cordless wouldn't have the power to cut the weeds around the trail but the Echo made quick work of it. I worked a little over two hours trimming trail today with the ECHO Cordless cutting knee-high weeds on the "turtle" power setting. The slower power setting preserves battery life and has plenty of cutting power. I can't imagine having to use the higher power setting. I did buy an additional battery because sometimes I have to hike about a mile into the trailhead. The electric trimmer is so much easier to transport than my old 4-stroke gas weed eater. I take out both batteries and place them in my pack with extra line and some water. This makes the weed eater lighter as well. How did it cut? - this thing is a beast! I actually think this cuts better than my gas trimmer. Perhaps it is the line that ships with it, but it cut threw the knee-high weeds without issue. I was able to continuously cut for about 50 minutes on the "turtle" setting. When the power started to run low (1 bar) I noticed that the taller weeds started to wrap around the head of the weed eater. This was remedies by switching batteries. Cons - I did find that my hand started to ache (around 40 minutes into cutting) from holding down the power handle and the unit does weight about as much as my gas trimmer. A bit pricey...but you get what you pay for. Pros- Cuts great, lots of power, about 45 - 50 minutes of continuous cutting per battery charge. Quick to charge - about 1 hour from empty to full. Low noise! No oil or gas fumes. Very easy to transport. Also ships with a pair of safety glasses and a hook for storing. Easy to put together.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Echo 56V Trimmer My wife wanted to use an Echo PAS-260 and its attachments. However, she had been expressing frustration as to how difficult it was to start up, especially when cold. We bought one and we are completely convinced this is well thought-out product, finely-executed. The electric motor, even on its 'turtle' setting, provides plenty of power for grass-edging and general weed-wacking duties. When switch is set to 'hare' (fast), it knocks down thicker brush and does it rather handily. Battery provides plenty of power and last more than enough. Five-year warranty, including battery, is a great selling point. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

It's got plenty of power and unlike most of the other cordless electric trimmers it has two strings instead of one. One battery will get me through at least 3-4 big properties but most of the time it'll go the whole day on average sized properties. I wish they would make a commercial model that accepts the PAS system attachments, that would be awesome!! Otherwise, I'm very impressed so far.
