Lake house porch
I hesitated painting our 1930s lake house porch until I stumbled across ECOBOND Lead Defender Pro in a web search. Home Depot carrying the product provided a level of credibility and comfort that Lead Defender would deliver on its promises. I ordered through Home Depot to get the free home delivery, which arrived at my doorstep three days earlier than advertised. Thanks Home Depot! Most of Lead Defender’s value is invisible to the eye. What can be touched and seen (e.g. coverage, color, clean up) met my expectations for a base level coating. Smooth sailing all around.

I bought a single gallon of Lead Defender PRO online this month (April 2019), received free shipping, and it arrived prior to the guaranteed day. Additionally, the day I was to paint, I took the can to the local Home Depot store and had them machine mix it since I do not have a drill mixer. The paint is very thin compared to regular paints but thick enough to use for painting. However, because it is thin, it had the tendency to flick off when rolling at higher speeds. It also doesn't cover colors well so if you plan to use this as a finishing coat, you'll need at least 2 coats. The manufacturer claims that this paint treats the lead by softening the existing paint and neutralizing lead by using reagents. I called Ecobond and they said that a single coat should be sufficient since the goal is not coverage but treatment. After painting a single coat, I tried scraping the paint off with my fingernail and it surprised me...nothing scraped off. I guess that means it did its job. I painted a single coat of regular latex paint over Lead Defender Pro and it provided full coverage. Needless to say, the paint is tough, appears to have treated the lead, and primes the surface

Not a lead encapsulating paint, dubious claims
This paint does not meet the ASTM standard (E1795) for lead encapsulating paint. Also have a lot of doubt about the claims. For example:
EPA 1311 - Not sure how this is applicable -- if the lead defender peels off and takes some lead paint with it?
ASTM E1613-12 - Also not sure how this is applicable -- if the lead defender peels off and takes some lead paint with it and creates dust? Suggests this paint is not meant to last very long.
EPA 9200.1-86 -- This is a method for soil, not paint.
