Can the shaft or head be turned to vertical for edging?

Can the shaft or head be turned to vertical for edging?
Asked by: Joe
The shape of the handle is such that it is super easy to rotate the trimmer for edging and cleaning cracks, etc. Be aware, though, that this beastie has heavy string, and when trimming edges it wants to climb up and chew away at the lawn if you're not careful! It's really powerful, and the cord is 3-cords thick and really will grab and walk away from you!

I get that the split shaft, according to EGO's rep's answers on several questions, "CAN be folded" or "can REMAIN folded for storage," versus the straight shaft. And yes, it's easier to ship a split shaft model but that's a one-time advantage in most cases - I won't be shipping my trimmer frequently. MY FIRST QUESTION: What's involved with unfolding the split shaft to use the trimmer and then folding it back up to store it? Is there a quick release button or collar or a similar way to lock/unlock the hinge? Or would the user have to remove screws everytime they want to fold the trimmer for storage and put it back together to use it? Also, some online reviews mention that over time, the aluminum fitting at the split loosens. What's the real life experience of owners of EGO trimmers with a split? True? (What happens with the split on other brands is irrelevant here.) There's a SIGNIFICANT price difference between the split and straight CF shafts so it's important to have full, honest disclosure on this topic (I'm talking to you, EGO). Being able to easily fold the unit for storage is attractive, but NOT if I have to break out tools to do it each time I use the trimmer. MY OTHER QUESTION: Why did EGO decide to produce a solid shaft model? Are there, in fact, issues with loosening on the split shafts? What problem is EGO solving with the straight shaft? And please do not say, "Because some customers prefer a straight shaft," because that would be a ridiculous and unhelpful response. WHY would they prefer that? Help us understand the value of the more expensive straight shaft. Thank you!
Asked by: GettingTheShaft
The split shaft can be folded by removing one screw. What is inside the shaft are the wires to the motor head, so bending them is not a problem, they are well protected and flexible. The problems with the carbon fiber split shaft is the knuckle itself . . . it is not covered under warranty, only the carbon fiber shafts are lifetime warranty. For this reason, there is no reason to buy a split shaft unless space is your issue as it is the weak point in the connection between the motor end and the battery end. My knuckle broke, I bought a replacement and am now figuring out how to replace it. More on this after I figure it out.

I have an EGO push mower with the 56 volt lithium ion batter, 5.0 Ah batter and charger. Will that battery work in this trimmer.
Asked by: Steven
Yes. I also have the push mower with the 5.0 Ah battery, and it works fine with the trimmer. The curved handle can be adjusted up and down the shaft to balance with the extra weight of the 5 Ah battery.

Neither one of you addressed the question by Art1014. In other words what is the weight difference between steel shaft and carbon fiber.
