Is the battery charger a separate device? Or do you charge the battery by plugging into the mower? I ask because I would plan to keep the mower in the backyard shed, but I would need to remove the batteries and store/charge them in the garage.
Asked by: JK
The charger is a separate device from the mower. You can't charge the battery while it's inserted into the mower; you have to remove it and put it on the charger.

I don't know, but I saved a lot by buying the less available version on line (Model LM-2002). It came in about a week, not the three weeks quoted by Home Depot.

20 in. 56-Volt Lithium ion Cordless Push Mower with 5.0Ah Battery and Charger Included is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 714.

The Ego mower is a replacement for a cordless, self-propelled Greenworks mower that I have been using since 2011, has had 2 batteries die and no self propel since 2015. After two mowings, I am very pleased with The Ego. It is twice as light and easy to push -- no need for self propel. The fully charged battery has had enough juice to do both my front and back lawns, about one hour of springtime mowing (see photo for grass height). The charger and battery are compatible with the Ego cordless blower. I have the mower's charger set up and use it to charge either battery. The mower battery has recharged in less than 45 minutes after each mowing. An extra plastic key for starting the mower was included.

Since most people seem to be relatively new owners of their Ego mowers, I thought it would be good to share a review after 3 years of usage. The Good: - Delivers a clean cut - Battery and charge time performs as advertised - Much quieter than gas mower alternatives - Light and easy to maneuver/stow The Bad: - Overloads/bogs down in thick areas - Even with a new blade, seems to leave a lot of grass clumps - Plastic mower deck and handle deforms easily The Ugly: - Ego Customer Support - After my mower stopped working properly, I was told by Ego customer support to take it to a Home Depot Tool Rental location to get a sensor repaired. When I showed up, I was informed that the mower needed to be sent to one of their repair locations, and that I wouldn’t get my mower back for 6-8 weeks. To anyone looking to purchase an Ego product, I will not deny that their products perform well when new. That being said, please understand that if anything goes wrong with your product, they will not give you any kind of rental replacement or loaner while they fix it. This is highly inconvenient, and it’s something that potential customers should think about before purchasing. When talking to customer support about this, their answer was “we recommend borrowing a mower from a family member” as their best solution. With the exception of one Ego customer support member that escalated my issue, they do not understand their customer needs or care. Overall, think long and hard about purchasing an Ego product. While an electric mower has its benefits, the smarter investment is with proven company products like Toro or Honda that have easily accessible repair locations, and probably better customer support in general. If I had to do it over again, I would not buy this mower, nor would I recommend it to others.

It may not sound like much but i've found it takes more passes to finish the lawn than my old gas 20" mower. The blade also doesn't pull the grass up enough to cut the finer blades and they tend to lay down and leaves uncut grass. The blade needs to have a higher lift in its shape so it vacuums more and can grab the layed down grass. This would also help with side shoot discharge. Overall the product needs to be refined better to make it more comparable to a gas powered mower. Also without the roar of an engine you forget that there's a sharp spinning blade and you start to feel like you're pushing around something thats more like a toy than a power tool. And of course real devil in the details is how many years i get out of the battery before it needs to be replaced. Only time will tell.

I was a little afraid to order this mower...too many people telling me a battery mower was a dumb idea. They were all wrong. Im now a single woman in her 60's and the old gas mower was just too messy and too hard for me to start. I always wanted a bettery mower but never knew anyone who had one. This one is perfect! I wish I had it a long time ago. I can mow my front, side and back yard with still a quarter of power left in the battery. I live on a corner lot so I have a huge front yard. The battery takes less than an hour to fully charge. I rated it a 4 instead of a 5 because of the way it starts. Once you get the hang of it, its easy but I have to stand there for a minute to remember the steps in starting it. Its not difficult, just a certain way to do it. Its lighter weight that I thought which made me super happy. The grass was pretty tall and thick today when I mowed...third time for me to mow with it. First two times, the grass was barely in need of mowing. Today was the true test.....absolutley wonderful. Its an eye catcher too.....all the neighbors are talking about it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I never thought I'd be excited about a lawn mower, but after yesterday I am! Our thick, 1/5 acre ... I never thought I'd be excited about a lawn mower, but after yesterday I am! Our thick, 1/5 acre St. Augustine grass lawn had been "forgotten" for two mowing cycles, with a solid week of rainy weather giving it plenty of time to grow. It was 6" tall by the time I got around to mowing it, which would have been a sisyphean labor with my old 19" 36v mower. Seriously, it would have taken probably three days with battery recharging to get the job done, and that would have been just the mowing, not to mention the trimming and sweeping! With a fresh 5Ah battery, it made it through 3/4 of the front lawn in a reasonable amount of time. When the battery got low, I put it on the quick charger and swapped in my other 5Ah battery to finish the job. That battery powered my trimmer and blower through the entire front lawn, and then I put it back in the mower and started the back lawn. After a few minutes, that battery ran out and I swapped it on to the charger, picked up the first battery, and finished the entire back lawn, including trimming and blowing, with the remaining charge. This had enough power to mulch the ridiculously thick grass in both lawns with a minimum of clogging (only a few times for the entire lawn). Being able to swap the battery in and out was a God-send since it meant I could finish the job without having to stop! Even without the second battery, it would only have been a ~40 minute wait to finish the mowing, compared to the ~12 hour wait for my old tools. If you have a large lawn and/or multiple tools, I highly recommend purchasing a second 5Ah battery. It's not so heavy that it makes using the tools tiring, but has enough power to continuously swap-and-go between the charger and the tools. I'd buy this mower again in a heartbeat, and I'm very glad I replaced my anemic 36v tools with a full EGO set, this mower especially!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed I purchased a 21" Ego mower in March and was so impressed with it that I purchased the 20" model as well, big mistake. There are several issues with this mower that I have a serious problem with. Firstly, unlike the 21" model the 20" has it's power button on a string, rather than being permanently installed. Why Ego did this is anyone's guess but I can tell you that it is a pain as every time you try to unfold the mower for use it gets caught up in the handle. Also, despite having apparently the same size motor as the 21" it does not have nearly as much power and stalls out constantly when mowing taller grass. LOVE the 21", HATE the 20".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Season 2 and Still loving it. I love this mower. I have used this mower for 2 seasons now and it's still performing great. Battery has not degraded one bit. Still getting 45 minutes out of the battery in high grass. Love Your Guys products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! Perfect for my small yard We have a small lot (68 x 120) and have an even smaller amount of grass (large house, extended patio, outdoor kitchen, rock garden, several flowerbeds). I have used this mower twice already and it is still on it's original charge. I plan to see how far I can go the first time on one charge. I plan to mow a third time today so we will see! I'm also glad I got the standard charger as opposed to the rapid charger - after doing research on battery charging and life I found out how much longer batteries last when charged at a slower rate. I would recommend you do the same unless you need to charge several batteries. For the average consumer the standard charger is quite a bit more economical on both ends.
