I often have tall grass 8-10 inches high covering most of my rural half-acre or more of lawn. I don't mow it that often. I'm trying to decide if it's worth spending $750 on the 20 inch brushless, or only $500 on the brushed 21 inch. Is there really a big difference in performance? Will the 21 inch "brushed" model work as well cutting tall grass? If not, will it get bogged down ALL the time?? The price diferential is pretty high for me. Thanks!

The brush-less creates a magnetic field using electronic controllers and magnets (duh) to cause the rotation of the blade. As a result, there is no physical contact between parts and therefore no wearing out of parts to be replaced. As a result, brush-less is 10-15% more efficient with potentially more torque. You will see a little more time between battery recharges and perhaps better cutting. Because there is no contact, there will be a noticeable decrease in sound from the mower. The published weight on HD has the brush-less (with steel deck) being 10 lbs lighter than the poly/plastic deck mowers. This seems counter-intuitive but could be due to the motor being less heavy due to no brushes. The electronic controller parts are fickle during the manufacturing process. Some will be defective coming out of the plant, others will be defective within the 1st 30 days. Typically if there is no defect early on, there is no problem for years. There will be more negative reviews due to this phenomenon. The company will not be able to control who gets a bad electronic controller, so a company's Customer Service quick response and resolution is very important if you are going to buy brush-less motors. It would seem Ego is one of the better CS companies from the reviews I have read with several different brands. Should you get the brush-less and have issues immediately, you may have gotten one of those bad controllers and just need to get it replaced. I wouldn't give up until it occurs 3x after receiving new parts or service. Of course, getting that done within the time frame for returning the mower counts. Brushed motors have a contact between the rotor or stator (not sure) and brush contacts, these brushes create an electrical contact to cause the spinning of the blade, the brushes wear down over time from the spinning. How long before you have to replace the brushes, I don't know. But I haven't read any complaints regarding replacement of brushes, so probably brushes are not the cause of people's disposing of a mower. Brushed motors are louder (unsure of how many decibels - wouldn't db level be a nice stat for those that want to keep their hearing), have less defects (no electronic controllers) coming out of the plant, are slightly less efficient, and may have less torque. Will they handle thick grass, wet grass? All the positive reviews seemed to indicate yes. Perhaps the dual battery mower is the answer to brushed but with more torque. Not sure. Then again, probably more electronic controllers for metering draw from each battery. From my research, it seems that the Brushed motors have wonderful reviews. Time will tell if you will need to replace brushes. I will probably go with the 21" lighter weight brushed mower and save $200, perhaps put that towards another battery. And wear ear protection if needed.

Can you adjust the height of the front wheels separately from the rear wheels or do you have to adjust them at the same time? On my gas powered mower, I have the front wheels set 1 notch (height) differently than my back wheels to give me an additional height settings between the standard settings.

All wheels adjust at the same time, not separately.

I actually prefer the plastic deck since you don't have to worry about rust. As for power, the automatic torque adjustment cuts through the toughest grass without stopping. The brushless motor will last longer (maybe 25 years instead of 20?). Now if they could just improve the blade to actually mulch instead of leaving a bad haircut.

Is this mower a high wheel mower (meaning rear wheels larger than front)? I don't trust Home Depot specs or pictures, and the online manual is no help for this question. When using the HD web site comparison feature 3 EGO models I am interested in, HD specs show only the dual battery EGO (with 2 5 ah batteries) as being high wheel, but the other $750 EGO I am interested in (with single 7.5 ah battery) also looks like it has high wheels from its picture, even though HD specs do not indicate it is a high wheel mower.

Hello Yardbird! All of our EGO mowers come with higher diameter wheels in the rear. Thank you for your question!

I waited until I completed the first full season of mowing before reviewing. We had a wetter than normal summer this year so the mower got more usage than typical. Most of the time when mowing once a week, I was able to complete the job on my 1/2 acre property on 2 battery charges. And the charge from empty would take about an hour. In order to get a second battery, I would recommend also getting the backpack blower which is powerful and takes care of any clumped clippings. You essentially get the blower for something like $40 if you buy it for the 5.0 mAh battery which costs $220 by itself. I was usually able to finish my lawn on a single charge of the 7.5 mAh battery with a single charge of the 5.0 mAh battery in under 90 minutes. It was also nice to have the 7.5 mAh battery from the mower to use in the blower during the autumn leaf collection. The best 2 things about this mower compared to a comparably powerful gas mower is the significantly lower noise level and no gasoline fumes stinking up the garage/tool shed. The LED headlights are a nice little bonus as well that you don't usually see on gas push mowers.

So far I am a little disappointed in this. First off it does not cut evenly. I have mine set at 5 height and I usually mow once a week so it's pretty much just a trim. I had to do another pass in some areas to even it out. Maybe I will try sharpening the blade, but I should not have to on first use. The second issue is the self propelled feature. I find the controls really finicky and it's hard to dial in the right speed. I have another Ego mower I bought in 2014 that still runs well and cuts evenly until this day. The battery just died so I decided to upgrade since I wanted a bigger battery and self propelled feature. The good thing about this mower is that it's actually quieter than the one I have, which was already pretty quiet. The 7.5 Ah battery allows me to cut the front and back without having to recharge in between. Right now it's hard for me to justify the price for this and I am debating if I should return this.

Its a very good lightweight mower. Preferred sturdier steel deck for also mowing vacant lot with trees. Works just as advertised. I am not mechanical and its easy to set up and use. Fully recharges battery in less than an hour. Have cut grass 6-9 inches tall and need to walk a little slower to allow cutting rather than matting, but not much different from previous gas mower. Can zip right through shorter grass without recharging battery. Works fine on zoysia grass. Very quiet. Replaced a well known brand, 11 year old 21" electric start self propelled model. Dramatically lighter. No gas to smell or hot motor to avoid. No oil to check. Maximum self propelled speed is slower than previous mower, so for a large lawn would likely take longer. Then again, its good exercise and I can frequently use it as a push mower since its so light. Probably need to recharge battery after 45 minutes if mowing a larger yard and using self propelled feature. Highly recommend anyone consider.

I have used the mower four times with no issue. I used self-propel once and pushed the other three. While various reviews discuss the size of yards, the key component really is how long the charge lasts, as people mow at different walking speeds. I mow my yard in 60 minutes and the battery has charge remaining. This was the same when I used self-propel and manual push. (I mulch the clippings; so, no stopping to empty the bag.)As other reviews have noted, the self-propel feature has some delay between engaging the lever and the mower moving. The cut is excellent. I have no issue with leaving a line of grass as some reviews noted. While there are stragglers, my Toro had stragglers as well. The only weakness is that it does not do as well sucking up leaves on the grass. It will pick up some but not all.I am very happy with this mower. I chose the steel deck thinking it will last longer. I do wish the mower was wider than 20". As a result, I do not overlap as I did before.

I just tried my new self propelled (BRUSHLESS) mower for the first time today. It is by far the best mower I have ever owned. And I have owned many in my 60 +years. The last two were Honda's. I will never go back to a gas mower again. However, the wheels seems rather cheap. So in about a year I will post an update on how well the mower holds up. That said I have about 10,000 sq. ft. of lawn and the battery made it all the way thru with about 1/2 charge remaining. The grass was tall and a little damp and it had no problems mulching. I did not try the catcher because I always mulch. Love the way it folds up and stands. The grass cuttings did not stick or build up on the steel deck. I hope EGO decides to build an upright indoor vacuum cleaner that will use the same battery. My wife would love it.

The battery lasted for the complete mowing of the 1/4 acre lot. As pointed out by other reviewers, the blade doesn't provide much lift. Its unfortunate that you have to buy another blade to get a better performance. And the self propelling does not always engage when pulling of the lever. This has also been mentioned by other reviewers. To get it to work you have to pull the lever several times to get the self propelling to engage.

I knew I wanted to go electric. I researched all winter. I also wanted something that compares to gas powered mowers. I looked at all the brands that had all the features I wanted, with great reviews, within my budget. I was on the fence about two brands. Ego was the winner. I am so glad I took the plunge. Purchase and delivery was flawless. The motor is brushless, with a steel deck, self propelled, user friendly, easy to start and operate. My lawn looks manicured. The battery has never run empty, on more than 1/4 acre of lawn. I mulch, but it comes with a bag, and has side discharge, as well. This mower is light enough to not even need the self propell feature. It feels like a vacuum cleaner, and it is quieter than a vacuum. It is a solidly built machine, more so than my old Honda. All and all a great experience. If Ego proves to be durable, I will convert to all Ego products.
