Educate yourself before plopping down your hard earned money! Although I love the EGO products, i'm not in love with their deceptive marketing tactics! Here are the issues: 1. It's advertised as a 3,000 watt generator. It is not. It has a 3,000 watt peak (3 seconds or less). 2. It's advertised as having 2,000 continuous watts. It dose not. Volts multiplied by amps equal watts (google it). Assuming you are using four 7.5 amp / 56 volt batteries, the MOST wattage you can mathematically generate is 1680 watts. I called EGO technical support to ask how they calculate 2,000 watts. They told me they "could not explain it". I also asked, how much of the wattage is actually available for use, the support representative stated "80%". This sounds reasonable. Assuming 80% is accurate, that would leave you with 1,344 watts of usable power. A far cry from the advertised 3,000 watts! If 1,300 watts is sufficient for what you need, I'm confident that this product will work fine. Before you buy, know what you are actually getting versus what is advertised.
Asked by: Y242
Y242, You are correct about point 1: they should be advertising this as a 2-kW continuous power generator rather than 3-kW, which is the peak capability as you stated; however, I would like to offer a correction on point 2: The largest battery currently offered by EGO is rated at 7.5 Ah (which is its charge storage capability), and not 7.5 A. I don't believe the battery pack could actually run some of the EGO tools if it could only supply 7.5 A of current. Another problem with these calculations is that you use the nominal 56 V voltage. In actuality, the operating voltage may differ from the nominal by 10% or more, and it will be decreasing as energy is drawn from the pack. Higher-rated batteries generally have more battery cell strings in parallel and can therefore theoretically supply more power unless the maximum power they can supply is artificially limited. From what I have read in a thread on the endless sphere forum, the 7.5-Ah battery may be comprised of 3 strings of 14 cells. I have yet to verify this, but I will assume it to be true for the following calculations. From a YouTube teardown by AvE, his EGO battery pack (which I believe is a 2.5-Ah unit) uses Samsung INR18650-25R cells. The nominal voltage of this cell is 3.6 V, and it is rated at a 20-A continuous discharge current with a maximum momentary (<1 second) pulse capability of 100 A. A string of these cells in series will have the same continuous discharge current as an individual cell. A parallel combination of strings will have a continuous discharge current equal to the number of strings multiplied by the continuous discharge current of the string. For 14 of these cells in series, you end up with a nominal pack voltage of approximately 50.4 V (14 cells at 3.6 V per cell). With three battery strings in parallel, this provides a 60-A continuous current capability for the 7.5-Ah battery pack (three strings at 20-A per string). Multiplying the total pack voltage by the total pack continuous current capability yields 3024 W, or roughly 3 kW for the nominal continuous power capability of the 7.5-Ah battery. Keep in mind this is as-calculated based on the capability of the cells, but EGO may be derating the battery pack to 2 kW to control the discharge current in order to extend battery life and/or to give it the same maximum power capability as the 5-Ah battery, which would be right at 2-kW if it is using 2 strings of batteries. Given the above calculations, I do not see any evidence that they are being deceptive with their 2-kW continuous rating. From what I have seen, some of their tools even utilize 2-kW motors, so a 2-kW generator is not out of line. For what it's worth, I doubt the EGO support team would have the technical details available to be able to tell you how the power rating is determined. You would have to somehow get ahold of someone from the right design engineering team to get a decent answer for a question like this. Hopefully this helps clear up any confusion and helps at least someone learn something new.

can i plug a level 1 (EVSE) Electric Vehicle Charger and get a minimum of one hour charge? AC Level 1 (120V/15A) A typical outlet (120 volt) provides a Level 1 charge. On one end of the cord is a standard three-prong household plug and on the other end is a connector, which plugs into the vehicle. Depending on the vehicle and size of the battery, level 1 charging can take 8 to 12 hours for a full charge.
Asked by: lance96816
The answer is yes. I have a Chevy volt and with the 2-7.5 amp batteries on the 8amp setting I got just over an hour. So if you had four batteries and put it in the 12 amp setting you should get well over an hour to charge at level 1
