Questions & Answers

Does the window open?

Does the window open?
Asked by: Corky
Yeah, the bottom window opens. It's actually a pretty poor design. You see, when your hands are full, and you open the door with your elbow and then back out, the door swings at you. Normal people put their hip or butt into the door to keep it open. Well, if your bottom window is up, then you've got a screen door swinging at you with only a flimsy screen to catch with your hip/butt. Then the screen pops out and you've got insect intrusion. Or, if you're installing this in a home with kids, they'll put their hands through the screen as they try to hold it open. I checked, there's no way to flip the two panes so you can have the screen at top instead of the bottom. On a positive note, since the door is vinyl clad particle board, you can remove all the protective metal wraps and cut it down to size to fit your opening.

Can it be used on a Mobile Home?
Asked by: Tiffanie
Mobile homes typically have a door that opens to the outside. In this instance, the door will interfere with the storm door and it will not work the way you want it to. If the front door opens to the inside, it would work.

These are cheap particle board core doors that absorb water quickly from the air as well as the seams. I tried sealing around the window insert frame to keep water out and it helped some. There is no porch roof over this door so that likely reduced longevity. The hinges are weak and begin to wear allowing the door to sag within a year. As the door sags it gets distorted and the inner window pops out of the track. The door sagged so badly that there is a quarter inch gap I can see light through at the top opposite the hinge and the door overlaps the threshold at the bottom keeping it from closing properly. Unfortunately I didn't keep the receipt thinking the 10 year warranty implied decent quality. This door may be OK' for a rental where the tenants regularly destroy doors regardless of quality. For your own use, buy a different door. I was happy with the cardboard box because I use it to lay on when changing the oil in my van. I cut into two full length pieces and its holding up better than the door.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible Door - Replacing after 3 years We installed THREE of these horrible doors on a screen porch in spring of 2013. They were professionally installed by our contractor. After 2 years, they began to bulge and the metal sheathing began to burst on the inside along the bottom edge, around the glass, and around the door closer. All three doors did the same thing to varying degrees. As the core of the door began to swell, they then began to no longer close properly. I had to resort to using a rubber mallet on the edge of one to beat it down enough so I could close it to keep out the weather. We're totally disgusted. Now, we are shopping for new doors. These doors should have lasted our lifetime. Did not expect to be buying new ones a few years later. Avoid these doors. I will never buy EMCO again. Total waste of $300 + the cost for the original installation. Money flushed down the toilet. Total garbage. See my photos and buy at your own risk.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Low Quality Materials I installed this door in 2007 and this week I finally had to contact the manufacturer for warranty replacement. The door has rotted from the inside, the particle board is rotting so badly, the glass almost fell out, when I press on the panels, the door no longer feels solid, but spongy. I removed the window and examined the wood, which was almost solid black and crumbles to the touch. I strongly urge people to save your receipts, because if this door gets wet, and most storm doors do, it will only last a few years. I loved the door when I first installed it, it had a reasonable price and was easy to install. The manufacturer said wrapped in vinyl, but it just has vinyl pieces glued over the particle board, easily allowing water to get inside. The door should have been sealed in vinyl instead. When my warranty claim is processed, I will be upgrading to an aluminum door instead.

It took my work crew quite some time to install as it had to be put together! However, it looks nice, opens and shuts well. I've had it about a week now. The lower glass moves up and down so you can let a breeze in; but you cannot remove it as the screen is held in by the glass at the top when the lower glass is raised. You must keep the lower glass in the door! In my old deck door that had rusted and looked terrible, you could completely remove the bottom glass. I liked that feature as cleaning the lower glass will now be more difficult. I guess I can take it apart to clean and then reinstall it. Will have to see how that works in the future. It would be a lot simpler if lower glass could be left out and the screen would be attached anyway. I'm on my computer so do not have a photo.

It's hard to evaluate the merits of the door itself because installation was a nightmare. The manual is incomprehensible, the steps are not clearly described, and the illustrations are few and confusing -- and parts were included that were not identified in the manual. We resorted finally to You Tube videos - none of which were entirely useful -- just to figure out some of the steps. It took 2 people experienced in far more complicated home improvement projects over 4 hours just to hang the door and install the hydraulic bar and handle -- and there's still more to do! If you're thinking about buying this door, I strongly recommend that you consider the extra cost of Home Deport installation (which is maybe the point) -- at least you'll have someone else to deal with the mess.

It does take a couple of hours to install. It came with the drill bit to mount the hinge to the door, but you will need one to drill the holes for the handle. I used the spacer clip to hold the door handle template in place for drilling. Ensure the template is lined up after each hole. When drilling for the handle, drill from both sides of the door, otherwise the hole through the aluminum shell will need to be filed. Remember, you do get what you pay for. It is a particleboard core door. If it soaks in moisture it will expand and ruin the door. I did caulk gaps like the bottom sweep to make sure there are no easy entrance for water. It was probably overkill, but I also dabbed a little caulk on the hinge before mounting to act like a gasket. If you are looking for a lifetime of use, this is the wrong price point to be shopping.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great door, one major problem. I buy these doors a lot. I am a general contractor. They are easier than most to install. They look nice. They are comparatively inexpensive and easy to use. The window and screen stay in the door at all times which keeps users from needing to store parts away seasonally. I have two on my own home. However, just recently, on one of our own doors, I noticed there is some lumpiness showing on the bottom panel, outside . It was caused by the fact that the bottom sweep channel holds water from rain and condensation which is absorbed by the wood filler. As the filler expands from the moisture, it shows through the plastic covering. Until the manufacturer remedies this problem, I suggest drilling a few holes in the bottom of the channel to let the water out before it gets to the filler.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from You get what you pay for I had 2 of these doors on a rental property for about 5 years. Anyone who has rental property knows that tenants are very unforgiving when it comes to using things that don't belong to them. These doors took a beating. I had to come and adjust them or tweak this and that more than once. That being said, you have to understand that these are probably the least expensive doors you will find on the market. Hence, they are probably the least quality doors you'll find. The bottoms will eventually drag and scrape and the hinges will show signs of rust and the window won't slide easily every time and the shape of the door will change with the weather and time causing unevenness during closing. But if you're looking for an inexpensive door that will do the job, stay solid and needn't provide significant security, this is the one for you. Have it properly installed, treat it gently and I guarantee you that this door will do the job for years to come. It's a decent value for the money.
