Product Overview

Autumn Carnation Encore Azalea offers vibrant year-round color to any garden. Autumn Carnation allows gardeners to enjoy the rich medium pink flowers made popular by the classic Pink Ruffle azalea more than once a year. The exceptional flower quality and color and the lustrous dark green foliage make Autumn Carnation an excellent landscape addition. Unlike many traditional azaleas, Encore azaleas bloom best in full sun, so choose an area of your yard where they can receive at least 4-6 hours of sunlight. Autumn Carnation works well in foundation plantings or as a low growing hedge. Be sure to plant your Encore Azaleas in acidic to slightly acidic soil to maximize your bloom yield. Fertilize in the spring with a balanced fertilizer after the threat of the last frost has dissipated and feed once more in the summer to help you Encore bloom through fall. Encore Azalea is the world's best-selling multi-season blooming azalea. In many areas of the country, Encore Azalea bloom during 3 seasons of the year-spring, summer, and fall. And, for areas of the country where azaleas don't traditionally thrive, such as those in USDA hardiness Zone 6 and 7, you will see a spring or summer bloom, but not a fall bloom before your temperatures drop.
  • Autumn Carnation's flowers are rich medium pink, semi-double form and 2.5 inches wide
  • Cold hardy to USDA Zone 6A. Hardy in USDA Zones 6A-10
  • Best selling re-blooming azalea
  • Attracts butterflies

With azaleas, flowers are kept in the plant stems. If you trim them too early you wont get a single bloom. Trim immediately after the flowers fade. You can shape them if you like at this time.

Looking at the USDA growing zone for Maine it looks like almost the entire state would be too cold to plant Encore Azaleas in the landscape. You could consider planting these Azalea in Containers and having them outdoors during the warmer seasons and then when you are having extreme weather below the recommended temperatures for Encore Azaleas move them indoors to a garage or sun room.

As long as they get plenty of sun and not too much water they should come back, the time it takes depends on the zone you live in. Once the start to come back sprinkle lightly with coffee grounds. I always save mine for my plants.

Answer

This particular azalea should survive winters in your area(Zone 6). In winter this azalea will change to their "seasonal color" of a bronze green. In late winter this azalea will shed some of its foliage, even in my area (Zone 8), so this may be taken even further in your area with significant leaf drop before flushing with new growth in spring. You may be able to encourage a faster flush with an application of fertilizer that is formulated for Azaleas, but wait until the threat of frost has passed. This will also encourage bloom production.

Didnt make it
I ordered this and it was delivered May 13 of 2020 and I planted it. It had beautiful leaves that were slowly falling off as the days went by. Below is a photo of my plant today. For $40 I’m rather disappointed

They arrived well packed and the based was wrapped to keep it moist. They are healthy looking and a nice size to start with. They slid out of pot easily and were easy to plant. Excited to see them bloom.

I ordered two Encore Azaleas in Pink. They arrived quickly and well packed. The soil in the pots was moist and the plant pots were set in plastic and tied with a string. I have not planted them in the landscape as I received them yesterday.

i bought this online because i could not find this particular Azalea in a local nursery. It arrived quickly but in a box that is several inches too short. The plant was healthy but top shoots were crushed by the top of the box. The box itself arrived in poor shape. I would only recommend purchasing live plants online when I can reasonably expect an easy return and refund.

I felt a strong urge to write a review of this plant after ordering the 5th Autumn Carnations from HD for three years in a row. Why? It is just too beautiful to be true! I first found this plant in a local HD store and thought it would be a great accent to my garden. It is way beyond my expectation! It blooms twice a year, Spring and Fall, and every season it blooms like crazy (see my picture) for more than a month. Every bud would split into three, and each single flower has multiple petals,. The color is truly pleasant and bright pink. Honestly I did nothing to it since it's established in the first season. Now you see why I ordered four more from Home Depot, one from the local store and three from online. The online purchase always came in very healthy and well-packed. By the way, this breed of Azalea does not seem to be picky about the location as I put them into different spots in my yard, some are shady but some are sunny (I am in Zone 7A). They are all doing well. The growth rate is slow to medium though. I am thinking of replacing some of my roses with this Azalea so that Japanese Beetle won't visit anymore.

These Azaleas are beautiful!
The Encore Azalea makes a great addition to any landscape. It blooms 3 times a year and the blooms are spectacular. I would recommend ordering them online as they are shipped directly to you and there is no need to pack them into your vehicle.
