Mine were open on the bottom. I cut Marine grade plywood to fit and am VERY HAPPY with these planters!!

No, it is not recommended to be painted.
It doesn't get REALLY hot, but the soil heats up more than it would in a plastic or wood container. That meant early sprouting and fruiting for my tomatoes and peppers. I have the 76" one and I think it called for 30 cubic feet of soil. The cut down on the cost, I filled the bottom half with less expensive in-ground soil, then the top half with potting soil.
