Questions & Answers

The Picture shows flowers growing in it, but the instruction don't show a planter. So does it include a planter or not???

Asked by: jenparson
The lid/top can be inverted for use as a planter. A screen is provided to aid in preventing dirt washing into the barrel.

Can the lid be easily taken on and off?

I want to use the barrel for grey water, rather than a closed rain water system.
Asked by: RedheadedDroughtVictim
Without being screwed to the barrel the lid sometimes sits askew making it a bit more difficult to remove. I find little problem removing it with a little twist.

The rain barrel is filling but some water is still coming out at the bottom of the downspout.

Did I install it correctly? The barrel isn’t full yet, but I can see some water flowing through the downspout. Not 100% of the water is being diverted into the barrel.
Asked by: Johnindelaware
Yes should be small amount . If barrel is full to the divert valve then it will also overflow .

When temperature drops below freezing how does it effect a rain barrel? Does it need to be empty?

Asked by: Minke
Not here in Florida. How about you Northerner's?

Customer Reviews

RainStation 45 Gal. Granite Rain Barrel with Diverter is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 656.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overflows during heavy rain Easy to install. It really should be placed on a platform so that the drain can be more easily accessed. The faucet is plastic and mounts with a rubber insert, but so far has worked fine without leaking. It doesn't allow for much water flow, so I typically just remove the top to dunk my watering can to speed things along. This could be an issue if you are using the top as a planter. The biggest negative is that in heavy rain it overflows. The rubber downspout insert blocks much of the downspout which is great for capturing as much water as possible during light rain. However, during periods of heavy rain the flow will back up in the downspout, causing it to still flow into the barrel. If you live in an area of intense summer thunderstorms, take this into account as in a matter of minutes the barrel can be full and then the water will just end up flowing down the sides. Either mount it in a location where overflow won't cause any issues, of trim the rubber insert to a smaller size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works perfectly I bought two of these rain barrels, along with two shut-off hose connections. (I'm not sure how the rain barrel could work without buying the shut-off valve!) They were easy to assemble (if you have a drill) and worked very well. Since my downspouts are 3x4 rather than 2x3, the diverter occupies only half the cross-section of the downspout, but even then a light rain fills up the barrel. I did put the diverter on the side of the downspout that has the most water. I attached the shut-off valve to the outlet on the botton, and attached a soaker hose to that. Then when the weather is dry, I open the valve and water the plants. BTW, the directions say to center the hole in the downspout 3 inches below the top of the barrel, but I did mine at 2 inches, and even 1 inch would have worked. That fills the barrel higher and faster (since there is a slope). The diverter would need to be centered higher than the barrel before there was a danger of overflow.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this rain barrel. I was able to find... I love this rain barrel. I was able to find a YouTube video of how to connect to downspout and that was helpful. I love it, but if you want to use the top a s a planter, there doesn't appear to be an option to screw the lid in place. The instructions appear to show a different model. That was the only hiccup I encountered, but I really do love this rain barrel.

I will say the faucet is cheap and not sure about the reliability of how the faucet and plug assemble into the barrel, but so far so good. We will see a year from now after it goes through a winter here. Value is excellent because i bought on sale. I wouldn't have paid the full price.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The lid does not snap closed into place as described... The lid does not snap closed into place as described in the instructions. It was returned to the store for a refund. The store reordered a new one. The replacement was the same. Even the store manager was not able to get the lid to snap shut, so we did not purchase the product. This serious defect

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These rain barrels rock This is our 3rd rain barrel purchase of this brand. Our other 2 are of a little bigger variety (approx 65 gallon?) but this 45 works nice for the location we added this year. Installation is a reasonable task and best of all the product works!! We attach a Python hose with a valve on it to the one by our koi pond to drain in and top off the pond during rain, trying to maximize the benefits of water collection. The barrel will be filled to the top after only small rains; it's amazing how much surface area our roof collects in a short time. You do need a place to store them in the late fall to spring, we store in basement or garage would work, the plastic is sturdy but wouldn't chance it below freezing risk to crack. They get rinsed out, wiped down when we take them down for winter. I snapped pics of this one in black vs. the bigger version in granite.

Perhaps I had unreasonable expectations, but it doesn't capture as much water as I would have thought. After 2 weeks and 4-5" of rain, it's about 2/3 full.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from does it all I bought this about a month ago. Installation was easy and I used 4 cinder blocks arranged in a square for the base. The hardest part was leveling the cinder blocks. (I recommend some sort of raised base because gravity empties the barrel) I have since installed a short 6 foot hose to the bottom spout with a metal hose valve shutoff. The top spigot leaks a little and it is plastic, but I used the included end cap on the spigot and it solved the leak. The included diverter works exactly like it is supposed to. I have emptied the barrel twice since purchasing and no problems and I am planning on buying another barrel. One picture shows the barrel immediately after installation and the other is after I planted flowers in the lid with the included pieces.
