Questions & Answers

Does the color stay black or how quickly does it fade

Asked by: tweedie
I read the bag and their website from Scott's and it indicates do not place mulch down if it is going to rain or irrigation on the area for 24 hours. The mulch has to "bake" in the sun to hardened the color. Plus Scott's recommends that every six months you turn the top three inches over to keep the color warranty

I need 1 1/2 yards of mulch. How many bags shoule I purchase?

Asked by: Geeg
That depends on how thick of a layer you want and how thinly you spread it. The Scotts product manual states, for 3" depth (recommended), 1 bag will cover 8 square feet, 2 bags covers 16 sq ft, 3 covers 24, 4/32, 5/40, 6/48, etc. There is a link to the manual on this product page. If you've already determined you need 1.5 cubic yards, then you only need to convert cubic yards to cubic feet to know how many bags you need. If you Google CUBIC YARDS TO CUBIC FEET a handy conversion calculator will appear on screen. I took those steps and the calculator states 1.5 cubic yards equals 40.5 cubic feet. So, since each bag is stated to be 2 cubic feet, you'll need 20-21 bags to get 1.5 cubic yards of mulch. To be clear, according to Scotts, 20-21 bags (1.5 cubic yards) should be enough to cover 160-168 SQUARE feet at 3 inches thick. I'm not sure how large an area you need to cover and/or how you came up with needing "1 1/2 yards of mulch" so I can't say for sure if 20-21 bags will in fact be enough for your project.

How many cubic feet are in a yard of mulch?

Asked by: Grace
If you Google CUBIC YARDS TO CUBIC FEET you will see a handy calculator. Type in 1 for the cubic yard and it shows 27 as how many cubic feet is equal to 1 cubic yard. Many calculators like these can be found on Google and will help you with many projects. Need to know how many square feet in an acre? Google ACRES TO SQUARE FEET, and so on. ;)

This was horrible since I bought and had delivered 200 bags of black mulch. Reportedly, this was a bad batch which has happened. I buy Scott's every year and this was a first for me. Home Depot gardening department manager Chris was very helpful in aiding with guarantee. Waiting to see how soon refund is issued from Scott's. I have another 60 bags waiting to pick up, will make sure it is not from the same batch/lot number. I will continue to use Scott products without hesitation. However next year, I will buy no more than 10 bags to start with and test them out first. As you can imagine installing so much mulch is Daunting and back breaking. I was horrified to see black mulch turn into ugly faded old looking brownish mulch overnight. The good news is that Scott's is supposed to honor their year long color waranty.

I usually pick it up at Home Depot and pay more so that the color stays longer and the bark is bigger chips, which I like. Last week, I picked up 18 bags of Scotts Earthgro Black Mulch and paid our yard guy to spread it. It looked beautiful and we were super happy with the results. Until the next day when it rained. Now we have 18 bags of mulch spread and raw bark where the black color was completely washed away. The mulch underneath from 6 months ago is still black, but not our new mulch. Home Depot was great and refunded our money once I showed them the mulch. They offered to give me 18 more bags, but it would have been out of the same pallets of mulch and I didn't want to incur more expenses for the same results. I contacted Scotts to let them know about the bad mulch, and they weren't concerned. They said they offer a guarantee, but since Home Depot refunded my money, they wouldn't do anything more. They didn't want to see the pictures, they don't offer anything for labor paid to spread the mulch, and they weren't willing to ship any colorant spray. Kudos to Home Depot customer service, and Scotts needs to do better.

I feel as though this is the same mulch we have purchased many years in a row but perhaps something is a bit different? We usually go with Scotts. Either way, this mulch - several bags - had "debris" in the mulch. Chopped up papers was one noticeable addition to basically every bag. However, one bag actually had METAL WIRE in it. Two large pieces. If Home Depot wasn't such a hike from my house I would have just brought it in to show them. I was pretty livid as I was (perhaps being a bit "stupid") using my hands to pull some chunks out of one particular bag to repair a couple little bare spots. I grabbed the wire but gratefully didn't cut my hand. I was petty ticked! Then I dumped out ANOTHER one from the same bag, this time 2x as long (probably about a foot, all wound up). If I had my phone on me I would have tried to photograph it but either way, we'll stay clear of this mulch moving forward. The pieces of paper in the other bags was annoying enough, but the metal sealed the deal for us. No more.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Could be better- not as good as Nature Scapes Usually I purchase the other Scott's black mulch from Home Depot- Scotts Nature Scapes. This year, due to lower pricing and more availability at my store, I purchased 48 bags of the Earth Gro instead. There is a reason why the cost is lower for the Earth Gro, because it's not as good! While the color is the same (I can't comment on the retention yet, but it was excellent with the Nature Scapes), the product is not refined as well, and you get some large chunks of wood. You also get random garbage. Bits of ground up plastic bag, part of a tennis ball, etc. And not just in some bags, but things like this in every bag, requiring you to take the time to pick that stuff out as you put it down. Overall, I'm not sure why Scotts needs two lines of black mulch and I think the difference between the products should be more clearly explained on the web site so customers can understand the difference and make an informed decision. If I had to do it over again, I would just go with the Nature Scapes instead and pay a bit more.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Garbage mixed in with mulch I bought 36 bages of the brown earthgro mulch and had pieces of plastic bags, bottle caps, pull tabs from soda cans, painters tape, small metal springs and other garbage mixed in with the mulch. There was something in every bag. I had to spend extra time picking out the garbage from the mulch I bought. This is completely unacceptable.

This the 3rd year in a row I have made a large purchase(80 bags the first year, 90 last year and 100 this year) of this specific product and I have never been disappointed. First the price at $27 per cubic yard is impossible to match in our local area. Normally in bulk rate with your own truck minimum price is $35 per cubic yard, more if delivered by the landscape company. I use the black and have never had any issues with color consistency. As far as mold or fungus growth, I only had that last year as I let it sit to long in the bags before I spread it out. After I spread it out, it was no longer moldy or had any fungus after 3 days of sunlight. It does fade some but every spring it's still dark gray and if you are willing to take the time to turn it over, it's dark black underneath. This year I'm planning on removing some in certain areas before I apply the new mulch, just because it is a little thicker in some areas, as some of it has decomposed quicker than other areas. I would totally recommend this product and for the price it is unbeatable in my opinion.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well I purchased 20 bags of this when it was on sale for 4 bags for $10.00. I spread it in my garden and loved the way it looked. Of course, it has lost some of it's color but no more than I expected. It did not and does not have any bad smell and I do not have a problem with flies or any other insects as a result of spreading this mulch, and most of my garden is right in front of and beside my house. I always wear gloves when I garden and the mulch did stain them a bit, to be expected with a colored mulch. The pieces inside each bag were or reasonable size, very few (if any) large pieces or sticks. Overall, I am happy with this mulch. I can't speak on how it looks after a full season because it has only been down about a month but so far it looks great! As a side note, I purchased a few bags recently of the Scott's Nature Scape black mulch and I feel the quality of this is not as good as the original mulch I purchased.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from If only it would fade to black I purchased 25 bags and spent a day putting mulch in our flower gardens. Hard to beat the price when it's on sale for 5 bags for $10. It does effectively keep down weeds when applied at 3" deep as recommended. It's also recommended that you turn the top 1" of mulch every 3-4 months to preserve color and prevent mold/fungus growth, but I can't imagine anyone has time for that. If you feel the need or have the time to turn/shuffle the mulch, grab a garden rake and just loosen it up to reduce mold/fungus. Unfortunately, the color does not hold up to rain and watering despite the 12 month Color Advantage noted on the bags. Some areas of the gardens have held color (granted it was only 2-3 months ago I put it down), but other sections faded within 7 days (1 rain storm and a watering). In my opinion, mulch is more important for weed control versus aesthetics, but I'm still disappointed at how quickly it faded. I'll likely try a different product next year.
