Questions & Answers

how many bags of 2 cubic feet make a cubic yard

Asked by: jeff
14 bags is correct. In case you are doubting that there are 27 cubic feet in 1 cubic yard, here's the explanation and see the attached graphic from DIY Network: There are 3 feet in a yard. And a cubic yard is 3' wide x 3' long x 3' high... 3'x3'x3' = 27 cubic feet Since there are 2 cubic feet in each bag (27/2), that would be 13.5 bags. But since as someone correctly pointed out, they won't let you buy HALF a bag, you'll need to buy 14 bags. - Now, according to the manufacturer, each bag weighs 41 (plus or minus). Those 14 bags x 41 lbs/bag will weigh 574 lbs Are you willing and able to take that home and then take it out of your vehicle? I put that much bagged weight in my Prius recently, and the light came on that said "Why are you doing this to me?" I'm kidding of course, but the point is maybe you want to have the mulch delivered, either by Home Depot or a local garden materials supplier. See the attached images from DIY Network should clear up any lingering doubts.

How much does a bag weigh,?

Asked by: suzie4
Your question cannot be answered, considering that these bags are stored both inside and outside. The weight will vary depending on the moisture content of the mulch.

Asked by: Cindy
This is the brown you're thinking of. It's quite brown. Here in the FL sun, it lasts well, approx. one year. I used 75 + bags in my new landscaping last year and I was satisfied. No large pieces or crap in the mulch.

2 cu. ft. Brown Mulch is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 4186.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Follow Instructions I have found recently that bags of mulch that does not specify what type of wood is in the bag, ie. pine, hardwood, cypress, red cedar, etc can be any type of wood that has been ground to a mulch. No Big deal since all of the wood will break down. I have talked to Scott's before and found out that each processing plant across the country will use different types of wood for their Earth Gro Mulch. I always look for the sale prices either 3 for $10 or for Spring Black Friday Home Depot always has the mulch on sale at Blow-out Prices for 4 Days. This is when I buy the product. Remember do not over buy because you have no idea of when the mulch was processed at the plant. It is not up to one year after you buy. Remember to READ the Instructions on the bag of when to or not to spread the mulch for the color advantage. Why would anyone put down colored mulch prior to a rain. The Bag states: "•For best, long lasting color results, do not allow colored mulch to get wet within 24 hours of application"

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product but the color fades quickly. Great mulch at a great price, especially when it's on sale at 5/$10. The mulch is consistent in size, quality and composition. No trash or debris. The color guarantee is more marketing hype than anything else. We're converting our front yard from turf to drought tolerant plants. Put down 15 bags 4 weeks ago, and another 15 bags this past weekend. You can see in the picture below the significant color loss over a 4 week period. Quite dramatic and more than I expected given the large print claim of a 1 year color guarantee. The 4-week old mulch looks like it's been on the yard for over a year and turned a grayish color. Very disappointing. Also worth noting in the 15 bags from the first purchase, 5 had white mold growing on the mulch. This may be a Home Depot issue or it may be a manufacturer issue--I don't know. All I know is I got 5 bags of mulch with white mold growing among the mulch.

I bought many bags of Scotts Earthgro "BROWN MULCH". Some bags contained dark brown mulch, some light brown mulch, some dark gray mulch, some light gray mulch and some with no color at all. The bags of mulch containing no color were full of some type of fungus or mold. I am extremely disappointed with this mulch and with Scotts, a company that in the past marketed quality products. I would have rated this "no stars" if possible. It seems that Scotts has become just another company that cares little to nothing about producing quality products. I will never again purchase anything marketed by Scotts. If you want quality mulch this product is not for you. If you want mulch that is a consistent color from bag to bag this product is not for you. If you want mulch that does not contain fungus or mold this product is not for you. My suggestion is for everyone to run fast and far when you see this mulch.

After leveling the product, it looked very nice and great look. Got so impressed that order 5 more bags to cover up few spots. In a week, we had a normal rain around 0.1" , surprisingly, the brown color converted to a very light brown color and lost almost 98 % of the brown color. Some dark patches stayed which makes the whole yard more uncleaned now. See pics. Very disappointing. I am regretting to use this product and waste my the time to go to store, pick up the 35 bags, off load from the truck, spread them out and gathered the empty plastic bags trash.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Good Product I purchased 4 bags of the mulch because it was on sale for 4 for $10. I had already put down mulch from a landscaper and didn't purchase enough. I had also purchased 20 bags of mulch from Lowe's (Premium 2-cu ft Dark Brown Hardwood Mulch). The color of that mulch is a dark brown, browner than most brown mulches. I thought it was good mulch until I noticed how large the pieces were. They were similar to large chunks of wood more so than mulch. Some pieces were parts of a small tree trunk or branch cut about 4 - 5" in length. Also found large rocks in a few bags of mulch. One rock was the size of a softball. I waited to do this review until I purchased some more mulch produced by Scotts and sold by Home Depot. This mulch was much better quality, no large chunks and the color was closer to the mulch that I get from wholesalers. I wouldn't go so far as to recommend not purchasing the Lowe's mulch, because mulch is seasonal and regional. The lot that I got may have been a bad lot but in the future I will be more cautious purchasing their brand and lean more toward the Scotts Brand.

We bought 50 bags 4-8-18. The next weekend we laid out 11 bags before we had to quit d/t rain. It rained two more day, then got cold and grey the rest of the week. By Thursday, we noticed the mulch had really faded. I expect fading after a couple months of hot bright sun but this was 5 days in cloudy Ohio. The mulch itself was good. No trash. It was a nice shredded mulch which I prefer because it holds together better than the bark nuggets. Notice the 39 bags of mulch behind the fence in the picture. And notice the contrast of the new bag (on the right) laying on top of the faded mulch.

While spreading the first 15 or so bags we tried to ignore the junk that was in the bags along with the "mulch". There was pieces of red and blue plastic, all sorts of odd shaped big pieces of wood, etc. It wasn't until the last 8 bags when we really started to see some junk. There was paper, plastic, Tylenol wrapper, blue yarn and most horrifying of all was a Lifestyle condom wrapper! I called Scotts to complain but aside from giving them the bar code so they could "look into it", there wasn't much they could do for me. Shame on you Scotts! I buy your products because they are supposed to be quality. Where are you sourcing this "wood" from....the city dump?

I waited to see how long the "color" would last and hold in my flower beds prior to writing a review- as most photos shown are immediately after application, or within the first fews days. The size of the mulch varies from bark size- to actual fine grade mulch. (As shown in photos) Not that big of a deal to me, but someone wanting actual 'mulch'- you may be better off finding a different brand. 1/2 if my bags contained red bark- not a big deal to me- may be a deal breaker for others. Sizes varied from mulch( pencil width sizes), to 5-7 inch bark. As far as color, it was great for about 1.5 weeks. We have had 4 minor rain days since application. The average temps have been 70-85 here. I can only imagine when it gets to the 90s+ this summer how much the bark will 'bleach' or lose more color. Again not a huge deal, but I bought it with the intent to have a nice rich brown color for at least the summer- and where still in spring and now I have gray/brown mulch. If your okay with the color dissipating- then this mulch will work- but for the extra money I would expect a longer color hold time. For the cost of regular cedar mulch, this is more expensive. I should of chosen Cedar with pest control benefits for less cost. Photos are of the flower bed facing East- this bed gets morning sun- and covered by noon-1PM. Not exposed to the sun during peak hours, so color shouldn't have faded so quickly.
