Is this the rubber mulch

Asked by: Lionfish
No, it is bark. The color is a rich dark brownish red when applied. Absolutely beautiful. It fades to a lighter pinkish red on the second year. I re-apply a thin layer each spring to keep the color deep and bold. I understand the rubber mulch doesn't fade at all.

After just 4 days after being spread and with only one day of rain, it has lost half of the red color already. The texture of the product is like wood chips or blocks, not shredded, or 'fine' pieces, which attracts termites that like to chew on the large chunks of wood next to the moist soil. I put pieces of flagstone under my potted plants to keep the roots from spreading from the pots into the ground and the little buggers are already setting up housekeeping in the 'MULCH' under the stone. I don't have the same problem with other brands that have a finer texture and I always remove large chunks to prevent that from happening, but this product is almost all wood CHIPS and CHUNKS. If I hadn't been in a hurry to spread the new mulch in my freshly tilled soil to keep the dirt from washing away and splattering all over the side of my house (heavy thunderstorms were on the horizon), I would have loaded all this JUNK up in my truck and hauled it back to Home Depot for a refund. NOT a Happy Camper!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Garbage mixed in with mulch I bought 36 bages of the brown earthgro mulch and had pieces of plastic bags, bottle caps, pull tabs from soda cans, painters tape, small metal springs and other garbage mixed in with the mulch. There was something in every bag. I had to spend extra time picking out the garbage from the mulch I bought. This is completely unacceptable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from POP of COLOR My sister and I are 63 years old, and share a home and all the garden work. Last year we purchased 60 bags of this product on sale, and we made seven trips to pick it up. After we planted out floral and shrub garden and our vegetable garden, we put the mulch down. We didn't use any weed fabric. We didn't have any weeds, and our landscaping is beautiful. The red color of the bark lost a little color when it rained, and still it's red, after a year of the harsh sun. We live in Northern California and have 110 degree heat every day during the summer. The mulch doesn't blow away like the other mulch does. It also doesn't attract cats, my least liked pest. Also, we turned the mulch over, and it's as bright as when we first put it down. Last week we added another area to our garden, and we're off to purchase more mulch, can't beat the sale price. You won't be sorry you purchased this, it's fantastic. The neighbors give us compliments all the time.

Earthgrow's Red Mulch was something my Ag. teacher friend always recommended. He claimed it cooled the soil and helped reduce weed growth. He preferred the red color, especially around tomatoes. I use it my garden and the reason I only give it four stars is because most folks don't use it correctly. Here's an example: A neighbor complained about a weed problem in an area where nothing else would grow. We have poor clay soil. I suggested he try mulch in that area. He bought only one bag and spread so thin that in some places you could still see the ground. Needless to say he still had a weed problem because the weed seeds still made it down to the clay soil below and sprouted. Scott recommends turning over the top inch of mulch every couple of months to prevent wind blown weeds seeds from getting enough light to germinate. You need a 2 to 3 inch layer to protect and cool your soil. A two cubic foot bag should cover about eight square feet with a layer about three inches thick.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's Mulch.....come on, people..... We picked up 10 bags of this for a home we recently purchased. 10 bags were not nearly enough, lol. We went back (after the sale ended, of course, lol) and got 6 more bags. Did the two batches match up perfectly? Nope. The new 6 were slightly darker red than the first. And do you know what? Who cares? lol. In a month they will all fade and blend even better than they do now. It's MULCH, folks. Each batch comes from different trees or processing plants and there will be a slight change from bag to bag. Throw it down, kill the weeds, and remember that nobody else will notice the color difference from batch to batch as much as you will as the home owner. It is dyed and will sit in the sun and get rained on and.....it will fade. lol. It will break down. That is the nature of mulch! That's why it is so affordable. Enjoy the sale. I am going back tonight for more....and if the color is not a perfect match I really don't care.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product is significantly inconsistent I have used this mulch successfully for several years. This year I purchased 10 bags, with significant color descrepancy. Half were bright red made with what appeared to be wood chips and half dark red with a finer consistency. I first though this was related to water content but no, even after drying out, my garden area looks like the back of a bengal tiger

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Colors Not Consistent I too was disappointed, as were other reviews, with the inconsistent color of this "RED" mulch. I purchased (30) bags today and had (22) bags of Burgundy/Chocolate colored mulch and only (8) bags of what could be considered "RED". The Red was a very nice color. Unfortunately, I was halfway finished with the job before I got to the "RED" bags of mulch (8) of them. Up until that time I thought the Red color was lacking. It was not until I opened a bag with "RED" mulch that I saw the extreme color difference. After loading and unloading 30 bags and carrying all 30 bags to my backyard, I was too exhausted to return the unused bags of NOT RED mulch to Home Depot. If anyone is buying this mulch, it is on sale at a good price, take the time to turn the bag over to the clear plastic side to see if it is in fact "RED" color. It is not easy to tell the printed side which is facing up. By the way, my mulch all came from the same pallet.
