Is this the rubber mulch

Asked by: Lionfish
No, it is bark. The color is a rich dark brownish red when applied. Absolutely beautiful. It fades to a lighter pinkish red on the second year. I re-apply a thin layer each spring to keep the color deep and bold. I understand the rubber mulch doesn't fade at all.

Earthgrow's Red Mulch was something my Ag. teacher friend always recommended. He claimed it cooled the soil and helped reduce weed growth. He preferred the red color, especially around tomatoes. I use it my garden and the reason I only give it four stars is because most folks don't use it correctly. Here's an example: A neighbor complained about a weed problem in an area where nothing else would grow. We have poor clay soil. I suggested he try mulch in that area. He bought only one bag and spread so thin that in some places you could still see the ground. Needless to say he still had a weed problem because the weed seeds still made it down to the clay soil below and sprouted. Scott recommends turning over the top inch of mulch every couple of months to prevent wind blown weeds seeds from getting enough light to germinate. You need a 2 to 3 inch layer to protect and cool your soil. A two cubic foot bag should cover about eight square feet with a layer about three inches thick.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's Mulch.....come on, people..... We picked up 10 bags of this for a home we recently purchased. 10 bags were not nearly enough, lol. We went back (after the sale ended, of course, lol) and got 6 more bags. Did the two batches match up perfectly? Nope. The new 6 were slightly darker red than the first. And do you know what? Who cares? lol. In a month they will all fade and blend even better than they do now. It's MULCH, folks. Each batch comes from different trees or processing plants and there will be a slight change from bag to bag. Throw it down, kill the weeds, and remember that nobody else will notice the color difference from batch to batch as much as you will as the home owner. It is dyed and will sit in the sun and get rained on and.....it will fade. lol. It will break down. That is the nature of mulch! That's why it is so affordable. Enjoy the sale. I am going back tonight for more....and if the color is not a perfect match I really don't care.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product is significantly inconsistent I have used this mulch successfully for several years. This year I purchased 10 bags, with significant color descrepancy. Half were bright red made with what appeared to be wood chips and half dark red with a finer consistency. I first though this was related to water content but no, even after drying out, my garden area looks like the back of a bengal tiger

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Colors Not Consistent I too was disappointed, as were other reviews, with the inconsistent color of this "RED" mulch. I purchased (30) bags today and had (22) bags of Burgundy/Chocolate colored mulch and only (8) bags of what could be considered "RED". The Red was a very nice color. Unfortunately, I was halfway finished with the job before I got to the "RED" bags of mulch (8) of them. Up until that time I thought the Red color was lacking. It was not until I opened a bag with "RED" mulch that I saw the extreme color difference. After loading and unloading 30 bags and carrying all 30 bags to my backyard, I was too exhausted to return the unused bags of NOT RED mulch to Home Depot. If anyone is buying this mulch, it is on sale at a good price, take the time to turn the bag over to the clear plastic side to see if it is in fact "RED" color. It is not easy to tell the printed side which is facing up. By the way, my mulch all came from the same pallet.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Color faded with first rain. I will be looking into the color guard guarantee. After a couple hours of rain, not a monsoon, just a normal spring shower, the color has faded to a dull gray. That is for 50 bags. The other 45 bags that I purchased on a different trip the store are a completely different color. They are not the dark black as expected. They were almost a shade of dark brown. When trying to blend 45 bags into the 50 that faded in less than one week, it looked horrible as it was blending gray faded mulch with a shade of dark brown. With two kids, time is not easy to come by. This was a complete waste of time and money. I will be going back to bulk, even though the convenience of bags was nice.

On may 6 I went to Home Depot to purchase 15 bags of Scott’s Earthgro Mulch in red. When I got home as I am laying it out in the flower bed I noticed it wasn’t the normal red that I get. It was almost burgundy in color. I liked it very much. Once I finished, I realized I did not have enough, so on May 7 I went back to Home Depot to purchase another 17 bags of the same mulch and when I got home and started laying it out I realized this was actually red. So I proceeded to finish thinking maybe one was wetter than the other and once it dried it would blend, but it did not. Needless to say now certain parts of my yard look like a checkerboard. So a couple of days later I called Home Depot to complain and the manager that I spoke with told me he would give me another 17 bags. Needless to say once I got To the store I was there for about 45 minutes and was not happy in the beginning with the service. But in the end they refunded the last 17 bags and gave me another.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Been using it for years... Would give it five stars if there was an elf, in the bag, that distributed it!. Color holds well in Cleveland, OH weather. A couple pointers: If you have old mulch -- rake/fluff it up -- depending on your climate, it can mold. Before putting the mulch down -- trim/fertilize your plants and shrubs. Took me 25 years plus to discover this, but if you are putting the mulch down, by hand -- cut the bag on the side, instead of the top or thru the front. The mulch falls into the bag, instead of all over the ground, and it is easier to break it up.

It looks splochly when spread out. It almost seems Scott picked their material off the street. Very disappointed in the big name brand. If you want to complain to the company, forget email. You have write a physical letter, I plan to include a photo for good measure. The price of the product won't break me, but am greatly disapointed in the quality.

I'm a contractor and have been using Scott's Earth gro mulch for all my clients. These last two years the mulch is either old and faded or white from where it is rotting. The red color is suppose to last all year but the sad part is that it isn't even red to begin with. This is my last year using this mulch. My clients are unsatisfied and I'm extremely disappointed in the quality of this mulch. Never again.

They leaked red stain all in the back of my SUV that took an hour to clean out. When I dumped the mulch in the yard, there were large clumps that were moldy. Yes, this was cheap and I didn't expect much. But this was worse than I expected. Next time I need mulch I will pay a bit more for a product that is just a grade or two higher quality.

I bought 12 bags of the red mulch at Home Depot in Jonesboro, Ar. the bags were supposed to be 2 cu. ft. bags but was only about 3/4 full. I mentioned this to a worker that helped me load them and she just shrugged her shoulders and kept loading. I should have gotten the manager involved for such poor amount of mulch in the bags. They were fnot near full of mulch.

This TIME WAS A BIG MISTAKE.I bought 9 bags on sale, but all of it was a light color instead of the rich red color that I always bought before. After putting this mulch around my yard, the next day it did not live up to my expectations. It must have been leftover from last year to make it look so faded. VERY DISAPPOINTED!

The mulch appeared to be wet inside the bag. Appearance was much more of a brown than a red. I put this down in my flower beds and assumed the color would come out as the material dried out. It did not. Guess I should have evaluated carefully before I put it all down.
