How should you dispose of used bulbs?

I heard that bulbs with mercury in them are to be disposed of in a certain manner to protect humans and the environment. My friends just put them in their regular trash. What is the appropriate way to dispose of them?

I have an enclosed ceiling light, and it takes 3 light bulbs. The usage sticker on the inside says 60w max. Is that per light bulb, or the total usage?

Customer Reviews

60-Watt Equivalent Spiral Non-Dimmable CFL Light Bulb Soft White (4-Pack) is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 241.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Bulbs As an experiment before buying CFLs for the whole house, I purchased packs of EcoSmart, Phillips, and NVision bulbs. All three were instant on and had similar warm up periods before reaching their full brightness (about 20 seconds from my eyes). They are probably at about 80% brightness when turned on cold, so not too dim at all. I purchased soft white for all three brands, and all three seemed to have similar color. No complaints. The color isn't the same as incandescent, but close enough and pleasant. There is one reason I would recommend buying EcoSmart over NVision and Phillips: the noise. Both NVision and Phillips emitted a very high pitched ringing noise, while EcoSmart was quiet. The ringing noise was especially noticeable in the bathroom where it's quiet. My house is now filled with EcoSmart bulbs and I will continue to buy EcoSmart in the future. (The Phillips bulbs are in fixtures outside and the NVision are in a little used room in the basement, so they didn't go to waste).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Like new design but frustrated other coloer temps not available in same design The design on these bulbs has recently changed and they are now shorter than the original design which is a huge positive. I really wish EcoSmart would start using this design for the "Bright White" and Daylight color temperatures they provide HD as I prefer the "Bright White" color. On the negative side, if you will be using these in fixtures where the bulb points down, some bulbs may have some small specs of manufacturing "trash" that you can see when bulb is oriented down (which would be hidden if the bulb were mount up). Out of three 4-bulb packs, 4 bulbs where this way (33%)thus one pack of then is being returned. I have seen this with other manufacturer's bulbs also and find it extremely irritating and a lack of quality control. Another negative is, HD charges more for the other color temperatures of this same bulb which is frustrating. Overall, this specifc color temperature seems to be a decent value (overlooking the quality control issue above) so I would still recommend them but I haven't had them installed long enough to judge their durability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Save Money! Save Electricity! Save The Planet! I first used these light bulbs at home. I replaced three 65 watt incandescent light bulbs with three of these compact flourescents, and the next month on my electricity bill the savings was extremely noticible!!!! Inspired by how much money I saved on electricity in my home by just changing three bulbs, I decided to start changing all of the incandesent lightbulbs at the office building that I manage (70,000sf). Since we have changed the lightbulbs in the office building, our electricity costs have gone down dramatically (like thousands of dollars per month in savings), our maintenance people haven't had to change a single bulb, and none of our tennants have complained about the change. If you want to save money, save your time, and save the planet, these bulbs are the way to go. FYI: I also checked around at other websites, to see how competitive Home Depot's prices were on Compact Flourescent Bulbs, and this was the cheapest bulb I found ANYWHERE, with the longest life.

However, you can expect that you will occasionally get a dud. Most folks buy bulbs to store for future needs, and the provided warranty requires proof of purchase. So, if you buy them, anticipate getting some defective bulbs and save your receipt if you are so inclined.
