I want to set the shelves at different heights, especially the shelf in the middle (#3) but I notice that the corner posts are split into 2 pieces each. Must the post middle tips join at the middle shelf corners? Or can all the shelves be at any height and can the posts be joined together (with special steel pieces) even if their tips are away from all the shelves?

It is possible if you want to get creative, but you lose some of the integrity of the unit. Take a 1x2 and use it in place of the two side and back shelf holders, I use bolts and washers to put them in solid. This way you have support for the sides and back but not the front. I would suggest if you do this that you put at least one shelf close to the center to provide for the stability lost by the front shelf in the middle

I personally would not want to try to put 800 lbs. of anything on each shelf. Maybe 6 5ga. containers weighing 100lbs each on the lower shelves. How are you gonna get a 100lb. container off the top shelf? Also, the shelving is particle board, which is porous. Any leakage will soak into the shelves, weakening them.

How are the vertical supports connected? Do you have to use a shelf to connect then or do they have a metal bracket?

Asked by: Amanda
I had to use the shelf braces. Assembly was horrific.

I'm curious how the particle board will hold out for the long haul. Especially in a shed

Asked by: Jean
My personal experience is that it would not. Having said this, if the shelves came like they are supposed to with a coating, then that would help. Mine did not.

72 in. H x 48 in. W x 24 in. D 5-Shelf Steel Shelving Unit in Black is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 670.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It is what it is, and it's exactly what's advertised I can't help but laugh at the negative reviews saying it doesn't look nice, or it's "cheap" or "flimsy", or it's hard to put together. Give me a break. It's engineered to do exactly what it advertises, and it does it with flying colors. For the price you won't find anything better in my opinion. I bought 3 of these initially and have since bought 2 more for my home storage needs. I can attest they hold the weight they claim, I have at least 3,500 lbs on one of them. In fact, the more weight you can add the sturdier they will be. The shelves (IF YOU ASSEMBLE THEM CORRECTLY) don't sag one single bit. Yes, they are low-grade particle board, (hence the low price you pay) but they are fully supported on all sides by the metal framing. Most of the assembly I can do by hand, with an occasional rubber mallet tap here and there. The last one I put together (by myself) took me 8 minutes. My local store quit stocking these, but since they are still being shipped for FREE it's time to order a few more.

It can not be reliable to hold itself together when in the specified 72 in. height. It will fall apart if you try to move it, or bump into it. Here's why: 1) vertical supports are two pieces, but there is no joint coupling piece to hold the two rails from falling apart if any forces other than a static vertical load is applied, ie do not accidentally push it! Note other vendors, like Monster rack, do it right and even have pictures of their joint coupling used for this purpose. 2) vertical rails are 16 gauge metal (0.050" thick) and bends easily, this can not support 4,000 lbs (more than the weight of a Honda Civic). 3) instructions on the pdf files here are not the same instructions I got in the box, mine says to stack the vertical pieces without a joint coupling, note the online pdf instructions is not for a 72 In. high unit. Thus there is no way to see these problems until you get the unit and try to assemble it.

I purchased 3 Edsal D5 shelving units after successful online search from home Depot. I had them delivered to a store near my residence because of the free shipping. They were well packaged and transport to my residence was a non issue. I unpacked them and inventoried the contents against the 1 page instruction/I.P.B. My son helped me assemble the 3 units which took approx 45 minutes total. I'm impressed with the simple but effective engineering the units incorporate. We assembled them with the aid of a medium soft headed mallet and encountered no problems at all. Anyone with a minimum level of mechanical aptitude will find these units very easy to assemble. The shelves slip easily into the inside of the frames and have a bonus of adding additional rigidity to the structure. They are very versatile and lend themselves to a multitude of applications: highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice, sturdy unit--Well made I worried a bit after reading that people were having problems with constructing the units--I went to Home Depot and looked at the units and found them to be just what I wanted--I also looked at the joining of the top and bottom shelves and agreed with one reviewer that a nut and bolt at the connection of the two frames would lend strength to the unit--I bought two units, had them shipped to the store and got help putting them in the car--When I built the units I paid particular attention to the joining of the units--Make sure you know exactly what you're going to do before you attempt to join them--The instructions are not that great--I then added the nuts and bolts to each corner which prevents the two sections from separating--First unit took about 30 minutes--The second one a little less--A rubber hammer is an essential tool for construction--I put the two units side by side and bolted them together--Solid and sturdy--Changing shelf height is a snap with the rubber hammer--Great product--I include a couple of pic of the units and the connections--

The steel framing metal can be bent by hand using plyers. If you are looking for a heavy-duty shelfing, look elsewhere. As an Engineer and construction contractor, these are middle of the road for home use. The shelfing was easy to put together. The challenge was building 3-feet tall base and then adding on top, another 3-feet tall frame. Holding the bottom from moving and then placing another section on top was challenging. The two sections kept wobbling. A WORD THE COMPANY EDSAL, if you are selling a 6-feet tall steel shelfing, make each leg of the fame a continuous 6-feet tall bar. Don’t make each section 3-feet tall and them put one on top of each other with thin sheet metal. Totally sucks. In order to make them stable, I had to secure them to a wall stud. As for the shelves, they are made of particleboard. Later I plan to replace them with white melamine.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cheap copy of a Gorilla Rack This is a poorly made shelf. There is too much gap between the rivets and the angle posts. The posts are .045" thick and the shank of the rivet between the bracket and the head is .100", so you could put two angle posts on the same bracket. I have had a lot of trouble at the joint with the two posts overlapping and not seating. Also, the interference between the rivet shank and the key hole is only .010, so the posts come off too easily as you're trying to install another bracket adjacent or above/below it. In comparison the Gorilla Racks I bought some years ago in Oregon have .075" thick angle posts and the rivet shank between the bracket and the head is .080" so it is a much better hold. Also the interference between the rivet and the key hole is .020" so the brackets don't pop out so easily. Sorry Home Depot, you're selling a substandard product. I'm taking these back and going looking for more Gorilla Racks.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Don't Try This at Home! Apparently designed for people who don't like bolts. This unit proved very difficult to assemble because parts that were fit previously came apart while you were trying to connect new segments. If your floor isn't perfectly level (our basement has an uneven wood floor) the shelves will come apart if one bottom corner shifts lower than the others. I wish I could have found a product that used good old nuts and bolts, these problems wouldn't have happened. The metal they use is inferior and won't stand up to the slightest tweak. As my half-assembled shelf was disassembling because it's hard to keep it together as it is being assembled, the end of one of the vertical braces became bent. The couplers joining the to0p and bottom segments need to be hammered on to the lower posts. The upper post then needs to hammered into the other side of the coupler, resulting in the end which you are hammering becoming bent due to softness of the metal .Also, the "wood" fiber board doesn't look like it will hold up to much heavy use.

I had purchased what I expected to be exactly the same shelf six weeks before...same model number, same price. But this set failed to include 4 - 4" angle braces which hold the bottom posts to the top posts. Instead, the instruction set required me to use the shelf braces themselves to hold the posts together, creating a NIGHTMARE for assembly. The posts (a light angle iron) had to be bent to be exactly the same angle (supposedly 90 degrees, but they varied) in order to stand on each other, and that only worked if I used the next set of shelf brackets to stabilize the system. I really liked my first set. I would NOT recommend that product without the addition of the angle braces provided in my original set. I was very disappointed and frustrated with the time it required for me to assemble this set.
