Q:What is the bottom width? The back picture makes it seem like it's at least 3", but the front pic looks rather narrower. Not sure if it's lens distortion.

A:  Thank you for your interest in our product. On the 3 1/2 version of the bracket the smallest portion on the bottom comes in at 1 1/2" W. The measurements listed are taken at the largest point, so the 3 1/2" measurement is across the top of the bracket. If you are needing something larger, we do have this bracket at 4, 5, 6 and 7" as well. Good luck on your project.

    A:  Thank you for your interest in this product! Yes, these can be painted and used to support a mantel. Be advised that brackets that will be weightbearing should not be installed using the keyhole bracket. Rather, they should be screwed directly into a stud.           Purchased to add to the reclaimed wood mantle I made...
          Purchased to add to the reclaimed wood mantle I made for our fireplace. I chose these as, with everything else in a 122 year old farmhouse, they had to be customized. I was able to shave some off the backside on one to make the corbel flush with the mantle. Stained and three coats of polyurethane to match the mantle and they look like they have been there for 122 years. Very satisfied
