Will the pilot light always stay on? I don't want it to. I'm looking for a millivolt pilot light.

We are getting a 24 inch set. This would be perfect but I want to basically leave the pilot light off unless I want to use the fireplace. Will this do that or only turn on the regular flames as desired?
Asked by: sg
With this unit the pilot flame is always on. The only way to turn it off is by shutting the gas supply off.

will this remote work with a log set that needs to be manually started with a match?
Asked by: Bob
Bob - This kit uses a standing pilot light. So once you light the pilot with a match or deep angry stare, then the pilot will just stay lit until you use the on button on the remote to start the main burner,

Remote Controlled Safety Pilot Kit for Vented Gas Logs is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 52.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well This is a great unit, not hard to install (if you are not frightened by gas), easy and intuitive to use. I've ordered a second one for another fireplace. A few notes: 1. The instructions to not describe how to hook the pilot valve up to the fireplace log set, as they assume you have the instructions for an Emberglow log set. I found those instructions on the Home Depot site, and they were helpful as I adapted the connection to my older log set. 2. I worried that the location in the fireplace would be too hot for the radio receiver, as it needs to be under 130 F. I located the receiver under the pilot valve (see picture) and surrounded it with rock wool (the 'burning ember' material) and it stays nice and cool. 3. I dropped the remote the first day I had this system working and it broke! -1 star for this! I discovered the indicator LED had sheared off. I opened the remote, and discovered the LED was wired in series with the radio, so I simply replaced it with a jumper. Back in business.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as advertised I ordered this unit to pair with my emberglow lanier oak 24 inch log set. I did not like the idea of using a match to light the set. The kit included some fittings that may work for some people but I ended up doing it my own way. I basically wanted the valve and stepper motor with remote, similar setups run for hundreds of dollars. I followed the setup instructions and lit the pilot and with a push of the remote the set lit right up. The high medium low feature works great, I personally like medium, and whatever setting you turn the set off is the setting when you fire it back up. I ran a flexible appliance hose from my gas inlet to the unit, then attached the pilot kit, then used the flexible tube included in the lanier oak set to go from the unit to the log set. I had to bend the tube in a circle to shorten it to the length I needed. To do this I found some speaker cable in my garage that just fit into the tube then bent it around a piece of 2" abs pipe. Then pulled the cable out, without the cable inside the pipe would not be able to bend like this, it would just crease.

This is a very handy improvement to almost any gas log set that only has a manual valve. The remote control is a great feature and, after over a month, everything still works perfect. A few tips- you may need a universal gas install kit with flexible metal pipe to install (also sold online by HomeDepot) and, you may need to figure out what fittings work best for you in attaching the valve to your log and your gas supply (spend some time in the brass and black pipe fittings section of Homedepot). Without these two considerations, you will likely find the valve puts your log far off center for your fireplace because the valve assembly itself is quite wide. Finally, spend a little time adjusting the pilot. Too big of a flame and it overheats the thermocouple and wastes gas. Too little and it might blow out or fail to maintain enough heat. Read the instructions carefully on making this adjustment and test all your joints for gas leaks.

My wife and I are in our 80's and wanted a way to light it that was easier and safer than to bend down over it with the lighter. Because gas was already there it was rather easy install. Took about a couple of hours to bend pipe and put it together. ( tell people to fill little pipe with sand and plug both ends to bend it---no kinks. Remove plugs and sand completely.) We both love new system. Probably will have to replace batteries early because we're having to much fun playing with remote. As you can see you have look close to see system in the lava rocks.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Touchy I purchased the Emberglow 24" log set and decided to add this feature on to it for my wife's Christmas gift. I work in the Natural Gas industry as a mechanical Engineer and have installed natural gas stoves and water heaters in the past without issue so I thought this would go the same. My issue started when I picked up my shipment at the store. They had placed my order of the log set, extra vermiculite, Flexible connection tubing, extra glowing embers and this remote ignition all in one torn and re-taped box. Nothing was in it's own packaging. I wanted to refuse accepting it but it was 5 days or so from Christmas and I would not receive a replacement in the allotted time. So I unpacked everything out on the floor at HD and inspected the 2 separate manuals to insure all the parts where there. They all seemed to be there but slightly different images of logs and brackets in the manual then they looked in person (Found out later the manual was for a different log set when I started the process of stacking the logs. Found the right one online). After getting home and starting the install I discovered I wanted a second flexible connection or this switch for the igniter was going to be and eye sore, as well as my logs would be off center in the firebox. After getting it all hooked-up and gas lines purge they thing lit after pre-heating the thermocouple tip. Then my issues started. All my gravel and vermiculate was installed and logs on top and pilot goes out. I adjust the pilot to put more out and its a louder whoosh sound while the fire is off. I just decide that it's low enough decibel to live with it (You don't hear it more then 5 or so feet away). I light the fire and start to enjoy what I have accomplished. 10 min go by and the fire's out, pilots out. I get gloves on to handle the hot stuff remove the logs and get to the back to relight the pilot and then the fire. Success it works again. 10 minutes and goes out and pilot out. I remove everything and look around and realize the bracket holding the pilot and thermocouple is different then the image in the manual and it is getting hit by flames where it's at. So I spend the next week going through once a day adjustments to positioning of pilot and logs to keep heat off the logs as well as still igniting the main burner. Finally I look at the manual I found online and read the trouble shooting issue could be the thermocouple is too tight into the switch assembly. That gets added to my daily adjustments to get this to work. I have the fire going for 2.5 hours the first night and have to turn it off for the first time with the remote and the pilot stays lit!. Success right. The next day my wife turns it on and calls me after an 1:15 and says its working well and thanks me for it. When I arrive home that night I see the pilot is out and its off and she informs me at about 1:30 hours it went out on its own. Back to adjustments. Thermocouple is too loose, too tight, too close, a chicken laid an egg in India. I wish I hadn't purchased this remote control system. My gravel is all messed up and my logs have been in and out so many times its a pain. Right know I think the issue is a bad thermocouple wire because it pulls away from the probe slightly (like 1/16") but who knows. I should have stuck with turning the gas on and holding a lighter. Currently I have a dark fireplace with logs in it and no pilot because I am tired of dealing with it. Merry Christmas Honey. The fireplace looks nice and will work eventually but it may be with another remote or manually if I get to decide. Where do you get a replacement thermocouple at for this anyway? but that is my experience for what its worth.
