What is the flavor or scent of the briquets? Is it too strong?
Asked by: JAM
The briquets themselves don't really have an odor other than regular charcoal. We use a grill chimney style starter...never lighter fluid.

This Memorial Day I went to HD and bought a new Weber Premium charcoal grill as a replacement for my old Weber. While there I bought a twin pack of Embers even though I had Kingsford at home so I would have nice fresh coals for the guest coming for grilled wings. Lit the coals in the Weber chimney and after they were white and hot spread and put wings onto the grill. The heat would only get to around 300 and dropped rapidly. About an hour I added more even though the coals had not burned down. It normally takes much less than an hour to cook these. Finally after 2 hours when it was apparent the coals were going out, removed the wings to the oven. The meal was a loss and everyone disappointed. I was embarrassed. Later that week I used Kingsford and had great results grilling on the same grill. NEVER BUY EMBERS AGAIN. The full bag and 1/2 another hit the trash bin and I am happy to be rid of Embers. Only received 1 star since it was required to review.

Big mistake! I use a chimney starter and have always been able to use 1 1/2 sheets of newspaper, light it and forget about it. This stuff takes a minimum of two times of paper/lighting, and sometimes three. With Kingsford I can be cooking in 25 - 30 minutes. With this it's anywhere from 45 min. to an hour. Once it's lit it does burn very hot, but very fast also. I would have to add charcoal for anything more than grilling a couple steaks or burgers. Coming back to the grill the next time, there would be a fair amount of coals left over from the last time - until you touched them and realized that they were nothing but ash. There would be very little, if any coals to reuse. Every now and then I'll have a weak moment and try a different brand of charcoal. It's Kingsford only for me now. Well, maybe Royal Oak if their out of Kingsford.

I was hesitant since all my life I used Kingsford, but for the price I decided to take a chance. After using it, I went back to HD and purchased two additional bags. It burns just as hot and in my opinion, longer than Kingsford for half the price. I will definitely purchase more in the future.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Yes Kingsford is the gold standard of charcoal. But... Yes Kingsford is the gold standard of charcoal. But I've bought several lesser and generic brands over the years that have performed well. This is NOT one of them, in fact this is at the very bottom. I see numerous high mark reviews on this charcoal, that's not my experience at all. I've lit this with both a chimney and lighter fluid. Each time I get a very inconsistent burn resulting in too low heat, and the coals that are actually lit turn to ash too fast. These briquettes aren't even worth the low price that they are.

My neighbor and I usually bring a lot along with our other needs. Only bought 2 packs to try it out. I’ll be looking for Kingsford sales at Academy or Sam’s.

I was out of charcoal, this was next to the Kingfords at half the price. With anything, you get what you pay for, its JUNK. The coals are small and look like a golf ball, they take longer to light in a chimney and don't burn evenly. I use a BBQ Guru for long low temp burns, this does not work. Spend the money and get the Kingsford Pro coals, unless you are one of those people that douse your coals with lighter fluid, stand back 10 feet and throw a match at it, then this is for you.
