7 in. Magnum Aluminum Rafter Square

This sees its greatest use in marking 90 degree cuts and as a blade guide for circular saw cuts on 2x4s and 2x6s. It can do so much more but it's a real work horse in this regard. For other angles this works well to make measurements when speed is of greater importance than precision.

These are Empire's mid level rafter squares, better than plastic but not as many features as their blue line which have extra features like grooves in the center cutout area of the square that you can put a pencil in and drag lets say the centerline of a 2x4 lengthwise. The price point for two of these is a real bargain! Well made and will last many years on the job. I'm thinking of buying 2 more, cutting out some of the middle area and gluing them together and making a set up square that can be used with racheting hand clamps for glue-ups.

I have owned two of these squares over the past several years, and they are fantastic. The aluminum is much more durable than plastic, and I have used the rafter square for much more than just rafters. The first one is still holding up great although the straight edge is not-so-straight anymore due to my using it alongside the handheld circular saw. It does work better than a plastic level in this regard, but do know that the saw will eat up the edge--which is why I say it "could be stronger" in the con's list; a stronger metal, such as steel, would make this more versatile. More recently we used this square to aid in skinning a beam (photographed), which in our case, has an outlet on it. Outlets are challenging at best to make cuts around and with using solid wood (instead of drywall) to skin, there are no tips and tricks for doing so without accurate measurements. We could not have done it without the accurate measurements provided by the square. Some of the many other projects for which I have used this square: building a wooden shelf, measuring wainscot for cutting around corners, ensuring door frames are plumb and square, ensuring countertop backsplashes are square, drawing straight-edge lines to aide in hanging photos, ensuring cabinetry is square. Did I mention I have dropped this square several times, and it has remained square?

This speed square (rafter square) is made of aluminum. No rust and no paint to come off. It is nice and thick. All the markings are well stamped - easy to read. It comes with rafter tables. There's also an inch mark cutout on back end and protractor marks on the hypotenuse. The only thing I do not like is the edges are a little too crisp. The thick edge also makes for a good saw guide (see my video). Made in USA, which is important to me.

I recommend this magnum fat boy 7 in because is good to take measures in 1 to 90 and is no heavy too I always used in my job .

These speed squares have been around now for many years. This one in particular is very nice for the fact that the markings are very clear and easy to read. The finish on the tool is excellent can read up to 7 inches and has the typical degrees and measurements for hip Valley roofs and your common cuts and laying out angle degrees.One of the things that I like in particular is that it's made in America. I use this square all the time in figuring out angles degrees and tracing angels in my projects. There are many uses for the square for the fact that one who does not understand all the particulars you can get on YouTube and educate yourself on all the uses that this tool will provide. There is also a calculation engrade on the Square for these complicated angle cuts that will make it easier to figure out and with a little practice you will find yourself using this all the time. these tools are lightweight easy to carry around also a lot of professionals use this tool with a circular saw as a guide to cut a long the edge of the square and make square cuts or angle cuts using this tool to hold against the wood as they push their circular saw along the edge of the tool instead of eyeballing a long a pencil line.
