Product Overview

The Summer Crush Hydrangea is the newest addition to the Endless Summer Hydrangea Collection. This variety produces rich raspberry-red mophead blooms in late spring and reblooms through fall. Therefore, this is truly 1 of the most prolific bloomers you can plant. Alkaline to neutral soil produces the characteristic red blooms, while acidic soil results in purple flowers. This hydrangea also features spade-shaped, dark green foliage that is naturally compact, with no pruning needed. At maturity, it reaches 18 in. tall - 36 in. tall and 18 in. W to 36 in. W. The Summer Crush Hydrangea is deciduous. This means that it will go dormant after the first frost of winter and then return in spring. It's hardy in USDA Zones 4-9 and prefers a few hours of direct morning sun and afternoon shade for best results. Water 3 times per week for the first growing season, depending on the weather in your area. During wetter weather, water less often. In hot and dry weather, water more. It grows best in rich soil with good drainage. Fertilize yearly in early spring with a balanced fertilizer. These Hydrangeas are healthy and well-established in their pots. They are not guaranteed to be in bloom on arrival. Additionally, they will ship dormant (without any leaves) from late fall to early spring.

I live in a warm climate in Zone 9 to 10. I planted it in a container and so far it is beginning to show some beautiful color. If I were you I would figure out what zone I was in. Also, you could Google Hydrangeas and ask that question -- you should be able to get a good idea. Best of luck!

Does this do well in a container?

Mine are thriving after transplanting into a larger container. The packaging was excellent. The color is true to the picture.

Answer

I do apologize but I do not know which container you are speaking of. I also do not know your landscaping requirements or needs. You can mix the Bloom struck with the Summer crush. You will need to pay attention to their spacing needs as they reach maturity.

How far should these be spaced?

Asked by Pinky March 13, 2021
1
Answer

The Summer Crush's mature size is 18-36" x 18-36". To plant a continuous border of these plants they would be good at 3 feet (center to center). I would not recommend making a tighter continuous border/hedge style of Hydrangea bushes as they need a very good supply of air flow to dry out their foliage. Putting them too close together could limit this.

Does this bloom on old and new growth?

Asked by Willow March 5, 2021

Answer

Yes, the Summer Crush hydrangea grows on both old and new wood.

What hydrangea can I plant in zone 10-11

Asked by Cammie September 5, 2020
1
Answer

I suppose any hydrangea can grow in the zones 10-11 given the right parameters. From the information I have been able to retrieve online Hydrangeas in this planting zone will not go into hibernation like they do in the colder climates. But officially we do not recommend hydrangeas for these planting zones. I think a good experiment would be in order. Buy one and see if you can make it survive.

Could I plant these closer together on top of a retaining wall, like a border plant or hedge?

Asked by Dawn May 23, 2020

Answer

The Summer Crush Hydrangea would look really nice like that. Make sure they get adequate sun and that the drainage is good for them, soil wise. I think your idea would look really nice with the right parameters.

How much lime needs to be added when growing in a container?

Asked by Jebs May 16, 2020
1
Answer

Adding lime to any plants depends first upon the chemical levels of your soil. Usually a good soil test can tell you the pH levels and the mineral levels of your soil. This is a good starting place to determine how much to increase the pH level of your soil for your plant. Soil tests kits are sold in any yard supply store.

Great flower! Great company! This plant was so nice I ordered 6 total. The plants came with the green blooms. It's green blooms before it burst into the beautiful color you see on the picture. Fast forward 2 weeks it's in full bloom. I ordered a few from Proven Winners, some are just now getting the green blooms, some are just beautiful leaves.

Arrived well with buds. Mine is a hot pink, nearly red and has a ton of huge blooms. Plenty for me to choose from to add to my kitchen. I have endless summer and proven winners hydrangeas, and I prefer the proven winners because of how many blooms there are and how big the flowers are. Highly recommend for your garden!

Good shape
I was worried how this would arrive after being in a box for a week but it was alive and well! No blooms on it yet but wasn’t necessarily expecting them either.

Dark green foliage
Bought 2 plants, arrived safe in good packages. One is bigger and healthy than the other. Have not plant yet, but it still looks great after 5 days. I wish I bought the 2 gallon plant, which I bought in another color from endless summer and 2 gallon looks much bigger than 1 gallon.
