The Lava Rocks were of an assorted size that assures you no effort was made to sort them by the aforementioned physical characteristic. Having read the previous reviews, I was prepared for this potentiality and modified my grate to accept any size. My efforts were rewarded as none fell through.
You must sort them yourself. Because of this, you should probably purchase 2 bags.

Lava Rocks
I used them in the fireplace underneath the ceramic logs on my natural gas fireplace works well. As others stated all size rocks and dust in mine. But ok the bottom is solid anyway. Great glow they look like embers. I had heard that you need silica sand on bottom the vermiculite, but none in the store so a friend suggested these. I need to only find out when or if I need to change out.
