Questions & Answers

Hi - can I use this on Garage Door?

Asked by: sam
Dear Sam: Yes, but it will not make any difference unless you also create sealed air pockets between the garage door and the radiant barrier. Why? Because this radiant barrier (and similar products) has almost no R-value by itself. All radiant barriers require a sealed air gap on one side, which provides almost all of the insulation. It is almost impossible to create sealed air pockets on a moving and flexible garage door. The only place that a radiant barrier can be used without a sealed air gap is a ventilated attic. Fortunately, Home Depot sells another garage door insulation product that is effective, summer and winter: Owens Corning Model # GD01, Home Depot Internet #202257272 Store SKU #744925 Store SO SKU #583042 This product delivers R-8. I hope this is helpful, Mark

How can this product be affixed to a metal garage door?

Asked by: audiovideofreak
Dear AudioVideoFreak: Yes, but it will make very little difference. This reflective barrier product (and others like it, e.g. Reflectix and Reach) have almost no insulation R-value by themselves. The claims are based on a sealed air gap that you much create / build when you install it. This would be virtually impossible on a movable, flexible garage door. Simply gluing or stapling the reflective barrier to the door will not work. Fortunately, Home Depot sells another garage door insulation product that is effective, with R-8 performance summer and winter: Owens Corning Model # GD01, Home Depot Internet #202257272 Store SKU #744925 Store SO SKU #583042 I hope this is helpful. can this product in continuous roll be put down ontop of the rood decking and under the shingles?...

can this product in continuous roll be put down ontop of the rood decking and under the shingles? Will this cause a problem for the new shingles? I lie in South Carolina. Without taking the decking off or removing the sheetrock inside, I can not get the the air space between ceiling and decking. That space already had fiverglass insulation in it, so from sofit/facia end I cannot slide anything in. It would potentially ball up the insulation on a 15 ft span.
Asked by: linda
Dear Linda: Sorry for the delay in this reply; I hope you haven't already installed Enerflex under your shingles. Radiant barriers like Enerflex require a sealed air gap to provide any insulation. (With one exception, noted below.) Simply installing a layer under your shingles will provide almost no benefit. If you have a standard ventilated attic, you can simply lay a radiant barrier like Enerflex down on top of your existing insulation, over the joists. According to independent tests, this can reduce summer heat flux through to the floor below by ~24%. You do not need to staple or fasten it to the joists. Simply lay it on top. If you attic is used for storage, you can staple it to the bottom of the rafters. I hope this is helpful, Mark

Customer Reviews

16 in. x 4 ft. Radiant Barrier (10-Box) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent - but lost its Energy Star rating The product is decent. Watch out when installing - you need to do it right on the fisrt go: once twisted, the wires that allow you to attach the panel between the rafters bend irretreivably, and the panel is no longer usable. Interestingly, the product lost its Energy Star rating, right around the time when HD had it on sale summer of 2014 - a fact not advertized by the manufacturer OR the distributor. The attic temperature did drop, though not drastically, as the product only handles one of three types of heat transmission, so this is an OK long term investment. Challenging to install in pre-built homes, especially where attic space is limited and the angle between the rafters and the "floor" is very sharp. Granted any installation of another product under such conditions would have been challenging. Overall pleased with product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enerflex is easy to install In Texas the weather is hott. I puuchased and installed this and it was simple to put up. Highly recommend. Attic temp is now much lower.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value. Should save me $ I actually have a remote temp sensor in my attic. Before installing Enerflex, I recorded attic temps 40 degrees above the outside temps. After Enerflex, my readings are more like 20 degrees above outside temps. I think I'll see a noticable difference in cooling costs, this first year. Enerflex was easy to install, although the roofing nails protruding down through the sheathing made it a bit harder. We'll see if they stay in place after next winter's winds give them a test.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Value for the Cost. The insulation panels are cut to the right size. Simply clean the surface of the door pull the backing from the panel and place.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Thinner than expected... The radiant barriers are nothing more than aluminum foil. For the amount I paid I was hoping for something more substantial. I can't attest to how good/bad they work as I haven't hung them yet. But just by seeing them it doesn't seem they will make much difference in helping with the heating bills.
