Q:can this be used on the inside of a metal building?

Answer This Question
A:Â We do not recommend using this insulation roll to line the inside of a metal building.

A:Â I am not sure that using it on the inside of a metal building would really do any good. It is designed to reflect the sun's rays coming through windows. It is a very thin reinforced reflective fabric much like tin foil. It has almost no insulation value other than its ability to reflect the sun's rays.

A:Â Four foot centers, strong enough to straiten and staple without tearing. I used it for the back of some bookshelves that were exposed to an insulated attic area. No heat there. The radiant barrier took the heat away and still allows access to the attic. Styrofoam would be my next choice but I believe the barrier is better. Styro over time cant take the heat and air exposure, plus harder to fasten. I wish I knew the stats on what the radiant barrier really does. It's not like foil that tears. You could wad it up straiten it out and use it. I hope this helps you make the correct decision.

A: Don’t know what you mean. I used it t wrap a water heater, and that was very effective. If you are talking about lining the inside of a metal shed, in direct contact with the walls, it would be ok against aluminum, but not against unpainted steel.

A:Â I would be hesitant to use it for your proposed application. If the product was installed too close to the heat source (like the exhaust system or the catalytic converter), it might catch on fire. It is a very light weight semi-plastic fabric with a reflective coating on it.

A:Â Dear Hube: First, this product is made from plastic that will melt or catch fire in higher temperatures, e.g. near a gas stove. Second, it provides no insulation -- this is a reflective barrier for radiant heat.
The best option for a heating appliance is a polished (mirror finish) stainless steel panel, mounted with standoffs on the wall with a 1" air gap in the back to allow air to circulate and cool the panel. You can also mount a Roxul ComfortBoard rock wool panel behind this air gap and in front of wood framing, for safety. Stainless steel sheet with a mirror finish is available from many suppliers online. For Roxul ComfortBoard see: Model # RXCB11224, Home Depot Internet #206789748 Store SKU #1001748089 Roxul is made from rock wool and is fire resistant. This is the only type of insulation that should be used near a source of heat.
I hope this is helpful.

A:Â The product is like a blend of plastic and tin foil with nylon netting inside to make it less likely to tear. I doubt very much that it is fireproof.
by|May 4, 2023
A:Â Dear Bobo: No. It is made from aluminized plastic and is flammable. The best non-flammable insulation product sold by Home Depot is Roxul ComfortBatt and ComfortBoard, which provides R-4.2 -- almost as much as foam board, but fire resistant. See: Roxul Model # RXCB11224, Home Depot Internet #206789748 Store SKU #1001748089 and Roxul Model # RXCB351525, Home Depot Internet #202090820 Store SKU #974419
I hope this is helpful.

The insulation was thin and easy to manipulate. After installation, I checked to make sure it was working properly and was thankfully surprised at how well it kept the heat out.

I had to order this product to be delivered to my local Home Depot. I got the roll home and it looked good. Once I was able to remove all the very pesky plastic wrap from the factory and wrapped again by UPS, the silver coating was only good on first two feet of roll. After the initial part of the roll, it was very hit and miss, with much only covered on edges.
