Questions & Answers

Can I Plant them in a large pot so they can spread?

Asked by: mary
I planted these in large planters (18"W x 12"D x 10"H), 9 plants per planter. They are rooting well, and appear healthy.

I have a 6 ft chain-link fence a round my backyard.

Will this English Ivy have green leaves year round to provide a visual privacy barrier on this fence?
Asked by: v123
Yes and it is lovely to look at instead of chain link, I cut mine a couple times a year with hedge clippers and keep it from becoming ground cover, you can do it either way. Excellent choice grows fast enough it can cover a fence in a couple years and no heavy wood vines, does not get to heavy for the chain link fence. Once growing, all trimmings are new starters, just dig a hole and plant and water, I find about 3 out of 4 will make it especially in decent weather, spring and fall. I do suggest a battery powered hedge clippers, after cutting several extension cords with electric hedge clippers.

how long does it take to cover

how long does it take to cover
Asked by: lala
Once established (3 to 4 months) it grows very quickly. To speed up growth after 1 year cut any extra growth (6 to 12 inch pieces) and plant were you want more, it will take off with regular watering. Not long and you can supply the whole neighborhood too!!

Would it be bad to plant in heat of August?

Landscaper misunderstood trim the ivy and took it all up. Now we have dirt...
Asked by: Grandma
It would be bad if you are planting in direct sunlight. I start out new ivy plants in a shady area, and I water them frequently. All have done well, even if planted in late summer.

The plants arrived well-packed, looking well-nourished. The dirt was still moist. After planting, the plants adapted well and began growing within a few days. Very nice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spreads very well throughout beds This english ivy has done very well spreading as a foundation planting under my evergreens. It has spread so well it has precluded the need for any wood mulch at all. I have even successfully propagated cuttings and spread this english ivy to other areas of the yard. I highly recommend it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Ground Cover on Steep Hill We have a very steep landscaped hill that we have normally covered with mulch over the last few years, but with all of the rain in Minnesota, the water washes the mulch down and you have to re-cover it every month. I decided to put English Ivy (Hedera helix) on there as a ground cover and forget about the mulch. I ordered the 18 pack, and 100% of the plants have survived, they are looking great and I cannot wait to have them cover my hill in 3 years or so. They have been growing all summer and they have grown about 3 ft from the time we planted them, the second and third year they will boom and add a lot of length, cannot wait!

My first order of these plants was packaged poorly, but arrived in good time and transplanted well. The plants were reasonably healthy. The second order arrived in good time but was packaged more poorly yet and significantly less quality than the first order. I suggest a conversation with the vendor to improve packaging and plant quality.
