https://www.homedepot.com/b/Outdoors-Garden-Center-Watering-Irrigation-Rain-Barrels/N-5yc1vZc7pb Is the spigot really brass?
Asked by: pfigg
Yes, spigot is brass and comes with a washer to ensure a tighter seal. I have found it useful to attach a small garden hose with shut off at the end of the hose to the rain barrel spigot. I control the on/off water flow from this hose end as this will reduce the tension on the spigot to reduce leakage at the barrel.

Can someone tell me whether the logo and wording on the front of this thing is a removable decal (I hope) or is it painted on? My local store doesn't stock these so there's no way for me to tell on my own.
Asked by: Pete
I bought one last year. It’s a piece of junk. It started leaking from the bottom in less than one year.

Does the lid come off to clean the barrel?

Picture of the barrel makes it difficult to tell where the lid margins are if in fact it does come off.
Asked by: ronh43
Yes you can remove the lid. The lid just sits on the barrel and you can close it tighter from the supplied screws (qty 4) if you like.

55 Gal. Terra Cotta Rain Barrel with Brass Spigot and Rain Barrel Kit is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 507.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Rain Barrel I purchased my first FreeGarden Rain Barrel in Jan 2016. I was so pleased with the quality (which should last for years) and ease of installation that I purchased four more barrels in March. The first barrel did not have the graphic as shown which I prefer since it is most visible to the street. The others are in the rear yard or behind landscaping so the graphic is fine. I particularly like the sturdy mesh that deters mosquito breeding and the fact that I can remove the lid that is secured in place with a few small screws. The first barrel was purchased as a way to redirect larger amounts of rain as the rear patio floods and is left with a dirty mess. Now we can hook up a hose, open the spigot and the water goes to the front of our property. The water saved in the other barrels will be used in the garden. Best of all, I was able to take advantage of the local water barrel rebates which made this purchase VERY affordable, plus the free and fast delivery. This is definitely a WINNER!

The overflow features on either side of the barrel are conveniently designed. I plan to purchase two more rain barrels.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Drought saver With the ongoing drought in California, this is just another step in water conservation that actually serves two purposes, one the rain of course, but two the 55 gallon tank serves as a water storage tank. In our household we can waste up to 10 gallons of water a day just on showers, most of the water goes down the drain while you wait for the cold water to turn hot. What we have done in our household is take two 5 gallon Home Depot (orange) buckets and keep them by shower. When a person takes the shower he or she fills the bucket with that first cold water that comes out of the tap, then when water gets hot turn off, put showerhead back and then continue with a maximum 5 min shower. When your done with your shower either empty your buckets on plants in yard or empty bucket in 55 gallon storage tank for future. So bottom line this product can fit in everyone's lifestyle, especially if you live in the drought stricken state of California.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works well but one issue The nice thing about this rain barrel is that there is a top lid that comes off, making it easy to access the collected water or clean the inside, and it doesn't need to be elevated on a stand. The design is basically like a trash can, so not the best looking barrel out there. It looks white in the photo, but the 3 barrels I purchased were tan in color and did not have the rain drop logo. The one issue I have a problem with is that after several months of use, I noticed the water started turning red -- the inside of the included spigot was rusting. Why in the world would you use a part that can rust in a container meant to hold water?! Since I don't use the spigot because it is faster just removing the top and dipping a bucket in, I replaced it with a 1/2 NPT PVC plug with a matching bushing for the backside, and reused the original rubber gasket. Problem solved, but still annoying having to fix such an obvious flaw. BTW, the clamp included to secure the overflow tube rusts too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product Very happy with this rain barrel--it was easy to put together (sawing through my drainpipe was the hardest part) and in a vegetable garden setting looks very nice and environmentally friendly. I was a little worried when I put it together that it would leak at the tap, but so far, so good. Having the overflow hose gives one peace of mind in heavy rain events. I've been able to do most of my vegetable garden watering this season with rain water that otherwise would just have contributed to an erosion issue in my backyard. I will definitely purchase more of this model for the back of my house--I'll want something more decorative for the front, but if this company makes something like that, I'd buy it! My city is about to switch from a flat water rate to metered accounts, so I expect these rain barrels will pay for themselves in short order.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent purchase We purchased this rain barrel due to its holding capacity and I liked the fact that it had a screen over the water entrance area to filter out dirt and debris that may run off the roof and into the downspouts. Set up was fairly easy assuming you have the correct tools. I chose to place my rain barrel on three concrete pavers to give it some height to allow ample clearance under the faucet for a watering can. I also bought what is called a seepage hose. I hook the hose up to the faucet and turn the water on and walk away. One thing to keep in mind with this method is make sure your rain barrel is located higher then the area you want to water. Obviously if your rain barrel is located lower then the flower beds gravity won't be able to do its job. We have been very happy with this product and we have even noticed a small decrease on our water bill since we are not using the outdoor hose anymore to water gardens.

Spigot goes in easy and does not leak when not in use. I now have three of these barrels and they are all connected, which is easy to do. (I have had one barrel for 2 years and it still looks brand new) We put each one of them on bricks and that brings them up high enough to level and get a hose to the spigot. What a great way to save water and water your gardens in the process. I highly recommend. BTW, the top screws down so kids cannot accidentally lift lid and climb in, a nice safety feature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top Value in Rain Barrels - Highly Recommended After a lot of research of customer reviews for several different rain barrels, I settled on FreeGarden Rain barrels and here is why: 1. Low cost: among the least expensive roof water recovery units out there. 2. Capacity: a generous 110 gallons between the two units I bought. 3. Simplicity: Direct downspout feed through a screened top opening is less complicated than through a dinky plastic downspout diverter and hose coupling. 4. Appearance: straight forward beige utilitarian bin, not a fake wood barrel or a fake pottery urn. And thankfully they don't come with the flashy decals in the photo. 5. Removable lid: convenient for a quick bucket dip and for cleaning out when need be. 6. Durable construction: heavy gauge, UV-stabilized plastic units that have a real brass spigot, not a cheap plastic valve prone to breakage. Some reviewers regard the location of the spigot several inches above the bottom as a drawback but I consider it a plus. It's a lot easier to screw on a hose or fill a watering can this way than were the spigot near the bottom, which would require building a raised platform. It's not a big deal to scoop up the bottom water and tip the bin to empty if you need to. I don't foresee doing this all that often anyway.
