Is the base on the less expensive model permanently attached or can I use it optionally?

The base is a separate piece which you can attach to the composter thru holes at the bottom with metal stakes - I don't remember if the stakes came with it or I just used my own. I purchased the base to keep gophers from getting into it.

We put ours on the dirt / soil and staked it in place. Out in our rural area we have possums and raccoons and like the idea of it anchored / staked in place.

I see that both Enviro World models are the same size, but the less expensive one has a base. Why? Also, what is the difference between a "stationary" versus a "compacting" unit?

The stake holes do not line up well and the included stakes do not allow for a compression fit. This results in small gaps around the perimeter of the barrel.

Top has to be perfectly aligned to rotate only about 4” to allow addition of material for composting.
