It depends on how thick the wood is. But yes, it can cut small branches.

12 in. Spear Point Serrated Fixed Blade Knife is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 35.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not your average machete This is unusual among machetes, at least those that I've encountered. It's a very hard, single piece of forged steel, somewhat shorter in the blade and denser than most machetes. It has a rubber handle directly adhered to the shaft, and is quite comfortable. Out of the box, it was not sharpened--or rather, it seemed sharpened, but had a burr that needed to be removed by some final sharpening. Once that was completed, however, it was quite sharp and holds its sharpness well. I'm in Florida, and mostly got this for landscaping around the yard. it does well cutting through vines and trimming plants. It can cut through palms and softer hardwoods up to about an inch thick quite easily. It does not deal with hardwood very well, and the saw on the opposite side of the blade is a joke--not sharp at all and not effective. But overall, the blade is very serious, and makes a great addition to your normal landscaping tools. And it will definitely be my go-to weapon in the coming zombie apocalypse.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from High Quality, Heavy Machete! The Estwing Machete is different from the machetes I have used in the past. It has a more substantial weight and comes with a high quality nylon sheath. The rubber handle ensures a comfortable grasp and is securely attached to the shaft. The blade is thick, short, with a smooth blade and a saw side, and made of dense high quality, forged U.S. Steel. I went right ahead and first used it to cut some palm leaves. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to cut the palm with one single strike of the blade. I had to use the saw side of the blade to completely detach it. The same happened when working on a shrub. It appeared that the new blade was not completely sharpened. Maybe this was done for safety reasons. After I sharpened the blade, it did a better job. The saw side worked very well from the beginning. Overall, I came to the conclusion that this machete is more like a knife than a standard machete. If you are looking for the usual light weight machete you may want to look for another brand. However, I can imagine it would work very well for other applications such as hunting and butchering.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A little longer and it would be perfect At 12" long, the blade is a little short for my liking. One side has a very sharp blade which resembles a very large knife while the other has a serrated edge very effective on fibrous vegetation. The knife edge works much like a very wide ax with the heavy weight of the blade giving power to your swings. I cut down some 1" diameter Hackberry trees in about 5 or 6 chops each - very easy. Then I cleared out some patches of overgrown asparagus with 1/2" fibrous shoots using the serrated side, again easy work. If it were a few inches longer, it would get more done in less time with about the same effort. But for smaller jobs, this works just fine. I don't hunt, but I can see how this size would be ideal for cleaning game, being more like a large knife. The soft rubber handle is very comfortable and is plenty large for big hands. The cover/holster has a large belt loop and a strap with locking snap to keep the machete securely inside.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rugged & Versatile for Sportsman or Homeowner I was immediately impressed with the rugged Made in the USA quality of the Black Machete. It comes with a weather resistant powder coated finish and a slip resistant handle. The heavy duty sheath is also very well made. All the seams are taped and stitched as well as reinforced with steel rivets. I have found it to be excellent for the campsite or back yard. It has a well-balanced, sharp, heavy blade resulting in a compact machete for clearing brush, trimming branches, chopping or any heavy cutting. The only con I found is the saw back will take some sharpening to remove the heavy finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly recommended! I needed a machete this past hunting season that was light, would fit easily in my pack, and would stay sharp as I cleared the area around my stand and to follow game through thorny areas. I own several other Estwing products and chose this one based on past performance of the others. It did not disappoint at all, it is perfectly balanced and performed better than expected easily slicing through the thickest thorn bushes and branches without ever getting stuck. I may need to get another one, I permanently mounted the sheath on my hunting pack!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best and mean looking machete/knife I've ever had! It looks and feels so good in my hand that I don't even want to use it in my yard. I am thinking about saving it for the zombie apocalypse. The cover is pretty strong and locks the machete in it. The belt loop in the cover is also very handy to carry it around. It's light on the hands but has a valuable weight to it. It feels and looks very well made.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sturdy, tough The blade seems to be made of good tough steel which has held a good edge so far; probably need to sharpen it a couple times per "season," which I would define as spring & summer for the uses we'd put it to in Idaho. The serrated side of the blade is useful on branches 1" in diameter or less; not so handy for anything bigger--get a hacksaw or regular saw for those jobs. The rubberized handle has a good grip--stays firmly in your hand even when wet or (more common around our high desert) covered with fine dust. The machete is well balanced, when either chopping or sawing. The scabbard seems made of a durable cloth (haven't had it long enough to be sure), with good stitching all around and reinforcement by metal grommets. Has a belt loop which could come in handy in some situations, but this definitely is too big to be a hiking knife, for example.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Performs well! This is a small, but good machete. I like the balance of it and it's very easy to use. You can balance it around the hilt and rotate it as you swing to get maximum cutting force. The steel seems pretty strong too as I was able to cut through some thick, hardwood branches with only a couple of strikes. This machete doesn't seem to wear you out either. i got started cutting some brush and before I knew it I had cleaned out every bed around my whole house. Nice tool!
