Is this axe fully hardened or is the steel really soft?

Yes it’s hardened. I am a carpenter and have used Estwing framing hammers for over 35 years. The steel will get a dark patina to it over time with use, but it Will rust and needs to be maintained if not used regularly. This is a Great size ax.

Is this one piece of steel all the way through?

Not full tang Steel all way througn. According to Estwing :"All our tools are manufactured from 1055 special bar quality steel, heat-treated to ASME safety requirements, which is 45-60 Rockwell C Standard. There is no fiberglass in the handle. The handle on the long handled axe is hollowed out, otherwise it would be too heavy to lift. It is in 2 pieces. The axe handle is pressed into the tubing. The tool then is heat treated where the axe handle and tubing are permanently bonded."

Some design issues but not a bad axe in general
Had a tree fall in the last storm and wanted an axe to help cleanup the debris. Purchased this because it was in stock and was not a 'splitting' axe which has far too wide of a blade and is much heavier. The axe performed ok but there are a few items that I wish I knew before buying so I will present them here. First, the axe is apparently forged from a single piece of steel which makes the center of balance significantly further down the handle from the head than a standard wood handles axe. Aside from feeling different, I figured I could get used to it. I used the axe to cut through an 8" diameter length of the tree in order to drag pieces away but it was extremely annoying to do so. Where a normal axe would kick out the wood when notching through the wood, the super thin head of this axe would cause the blade to stick in the wood every time and would have to be coaxed out before the next cut. I was impressed by the depth of the cut but it doubled the amount of effort it took due to the head sticking in the wood. The axe performed reasonable removing small (1" dia) branches from the larger, making nice clean cuts with a single swing. Now for the issue... When moving to larger branches (approx 2" in diameter) which were harder wood, the blade failed and the leading edge rolled. The only reason I can think is that when making large cuts for felling a tree or chopping through a fallen trunk, the cuts are nearly perpendicular to the wood where when you remove branches, you cut along the main branch, striking the smaller branch at an angle. This axe fails in this respect and will be returned to the store after only a few hours of use and replaced by a more traditional design.
