What is the carbon content of this steel and is it hardenable

Asked by: Dragonborn
It is impossible to know the exact quality of this steel. The store does not offer any information. I bought a rod to use with my forge. In the forth heat, the tip began to fall apart. One person commented that it looked like "cottage cheese." I would really like to know the kind of steel used in these rods, but I would recommend that if you need something very strong, this might not be the best choice.

Is the rod machinable??

Asked by: Clark
I would guess these are hot rolled as they gum up terribly and leave ridges when I have tried to turn them on a lathe.
