What's the thin pipe sticking out, shown in the photo?

That is a sleeve meant to be in settled into plastic tubing if used. It pops out when the nit is removed. It prevents the plastic tubing from collapsing when the compression nut is tightened.

the 1/4" sleeve just pulls right out. it doesn't seem to compress and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

The compression coupling has a nut a feral and the body. First you need to take the coupling apart, then put one nut on the 1/4” tube to be attached and the feral. Do the same to the other side and slip the two ends together. Then hand tighten the two nuts. Put a open end wrench on the center nut and tighten the feral nuts on each end. That should connect the tube. Do not over tighten the feral nuts. Pressurize slowly

We do not have any install videos for our compression fittings. The captured ferrule works in the same manner as a non-captured ferrule. Please reach out to Customer Care if you need additional assistance and they can put you in touch with the supplier.

Answer

The job of the insert is to prevent the tube from distorting as the ferrule is compressed onto the tube. You may be able to make the end more pliable by putting it into some warm to hot water to soften it some making it easier to install the insert. You should not use so much force that you might crack the tubing. The opposite problem of being to loose can be an issue if after tightening the fitting the ferrule is not securely held as the connection would be prone to leaks. It is also advised to make sure to not overtighten compression connections as that increases the chance for the ferrule to distort. Another option would be to use a John Guest push to connect fitting such as: https://www.homedepot.com/p/John-Guest-1-4-in-O-D-x-1-4-in-O-D-NPTF-Polypropylene-Push-to-Connect-Coupling-Fitting-803149/300753474 For 1/4”, or https://www.homedepot.com/p/John-Guest-3-8-in-O-D-x-3-8-in-O-D-NPTF-Polypropylene-Push-to-Connect-Coupling-Fitting-803179/300753475 For 3/8”.

Will this work with cooper 1/2 inch ID and PvC

Store SKU 657943 will work with 1/2” Copper tubing. Compression fittings will not work with PVC as the compression ring will break the PVC pipe. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-2-in-O-D-Comp-x-1-2-in-O-D-Comp-Lead-Free-Brass-Compression-Coupling-Fitting-800939/207176879

Can you use on polyethylene tubing?

Yes, this fitting can be used with polyethylene tubing. It is recommended to use the included brass insert with vinyl tubing. Take care not to over tighten the fitting.

No I don’t. The ferrules are more than enough. I used the inserts when using poly tubing.

Is this the correct part to connect 2 ice maker water lines together. Bought a 10ft installation kit but needed 20ft

Yes, as long as your ice maker water lines are 1/4 inch -- I used this exact part to connect 2 10ft braided water lines because I needed 20ft.

How is this lead-free, and still carries a CA prop 65 warning?

Asked by mz November 12, 2018

Answer

Because lawyers. Seriously though, being lead-free doesn't actually mean 100% lead-free; it means drinking water safe. There can be a minute amount of lead running free in the brass that would be undetectable without smelting and assaying the base material. So, lawyers...

These do no work with copper ¼" OD tubing. I incrementally torqued these couplings as hard I could (to the point the wrench was rounding off the nut) and I could not get them to seal. In fact, the ¼” OD copper tubing would rotate in the ferrule after it was torqued. Upon further inspection the ferrules are not designed like traditional ferrules. These ones are “captured” in the nut and there is an extra ring of brass around the ferrule to maintain the “capturing” feature. This extra ring on the ferrule is preventing it from properly squeezing down on the tube. I’m returning these and getting a traditional set with a loose ferrule.

not meant for copper water lines
do not buy if you want to use this on a copper water line, there is no seal, the tube keeps coming out and the nut never tightens

Didn’t like the captive compression rings.
I bought the 1/4 inch coupliing and ended up using my own compression rings and nuts. With the supplied captive compression rings my tubing spun in the fitting regardless of torque on the nuts. Not good.

Need to have some experience to install this fitting or it will leak. You may also get a fitting with internal parts that do not fit well together.I took this fitting back for a refund and purchased a Shark Bite Nylon fitting that I installed in one minute and it did not leak.
