Questions & Answers

How do I determine what spring I will need to replace the broken one?

Asked by: shark
Since no one here really answered your question, here's how I did it. You'll need a simple bathroom scale and another person to help you do this. I fully opened the door and supported it with a locking plier in each roller guide (you'll need two) so it wouldn't slam shut. I removed the old springs, which never balanced my garage door, even when new. With someone to help (the unsprung door will be heavy!) CAREFULLY fully close the door. Then open the door a few inches and slide the scale on the floor under it and carefully close the door again on top of the scale. The scale will now measure the weight of your unsprung door. You can now buy the correct spring. Remember, the weight of the door should equal the spring tension needed. Be advised that not all scales are accurate, and there are other circumstances where the door may not rest correctly on the scale, so you may have to do this again until the door is correctly balanced (I had to). My original springs were not color coded, and don't need to be if you follow these directions. Hope this helps!

My garage door currently has Green marked Spring that is rated 120 pounds. Can I use Yellow rated spring 130 pounds since Home depot does not have a pair of green rated springs. Will it do any harm to the motor or may be not since it is too close in weight.
Asked by: Navneet
I have this same question. Answer—Maybe. Theoretically, the 10lb difference should be adjustable as long as the dimensions of the springs are identical. The door needs to adjusted without the opener connected to it. When adjusted properly the door will stay in any position you put it ; neither dropping or raising on it’s own. If you manually lower the door part way and it drops, tighten each spring equally until it will remain in place. If you manually raise the door part way and it continues to rise on it’s own, loosen each spring equaly until the door stays in the position you leave it. If one end of the door is higher off the ground than the other end then the high end spring needs to be loosened a little and the low end needs to be tightened a little. If you can adjust the heavier springs so that the door is ‘in balance’ then it won’t hurt the opener.

Perfect combination of springs and safety lines at the best price for someone who knows what he is doing. You need your own tools for extending the springs a few inches and that may be tricky with 130 pounds resistance. Think about that before you buy it, get the necessary tools at the same time, and you should be completely satisfied as I am.

My original springs never really balanced the garage door since it was installed. Wanting to install an electric garage door opener necessitated a balanced door. These springs worked perfectly. Installation was easy and the spring retainer cable was a super plus. Great value!!!

I removed 110 lb springs, installed 110 lb everbilt springs and after 1 week, they wouldn't keep the door open. I installed the 130's and they were worse. I'll shop somewhere else now.
