These drawer slides are SOFT-CLOSE, NOT self-close. You have to manually close the drawer to the point that engages the SOFT-CLOSE mechanism. A self-close drawer slide would require a mechanism that would hold the drawer open until it was disengaged, at which point the self-close mechanism would pull the drawer into the cabinet - similar to the closing cylinder on an aluminum storm door The purpose of the SOFT-CLOSE feature is to cushion the closing drawer by absorbing any excessive force that may have been applied to the closing of the drawer - no more slamming drawers.

It seems very hard to pull the drawer out until you get past a certain initial point. Has anyone else had this problem and is there a way to alleviate it? The soft close seems to work fine, it is when you try to open the drawer.

Can this be sued for center under mount drawer?
Asked by: JB
No, the bearings are not built to carry the load when laying flat. You need to get a specific type of glide for that and that usually calls for the drawers to be build a little differently.

We have put regular full extensions on our other drawers and we are very happy with then. Since we live 45 miles from our closest store, we decided to go ahead and use it for a trash drawer we put under our kitchen sink yesterday. You have to push the drawer within about 1.5" of close before it engages. We dont see the advantage. And then that same soft close mechanism creates tension that makes opening the drawer more difficult, forcing you to have to pull harder on the drawer to open. Having the regular ones on the rest of our drawers with no issues, we don't see this as an advantage, but an inconvenience and extra cost. In addition, installation is more difficult. It is necessary to manually reset the closer mechanism to access the back screw. It is also more difficult to insert the drawer into the side rails because of a metal trigger pin on the drawer portion of the slides which interferes with the leading edge of the cabinet portions of the slides.

I bought two sets of these for a work bench I built a couple years ago and I thought then that they were inferior and the soft close self close never worked and I really have to push hard to over come the thick grease that comes on these things. A little WD-40 takes care of that. Fast forward to 2 years later and I am adding two sliding shelves to a kitchen cabinet. Yes, I made them 1 inch narrower than the opening to make up for the two slides. Once again the installation instructions are next to useless and once again the auto soft close doesn't work and also needed WD-40 to clean up the excess grease on these things so they would at least roll. Oh... I found some guy who explained that I should use the holes that are inside the U or C shaped cut outs int the part that mounts to the cabinet. Those little tabs will bed to take in any irregularities.

Having never installed this sort of thing before I found it difficult to install so that it worked properly. The mounts at the back of the slide were very exacting and not easy on plaster over wall board. I wound up making a form for each drawer. Also, I had one slide that failed and had to be replaced.

There is a rear bracket you have to buy to attach the rear of the slide to the back of the cabinet. The rear bracket is 1 3/4" long. I did not have that much room between the back of the drawer and the back of the cabinet so I was not able to use these slides and had to return them to the store. I do not understand why the rear brackets are not sold in the same package as the slide, since you cannot mount these without the rear bracket. All the other brands of slides also don't have the rear brackets come in the same package as the slides.

The install instructions for these slides were confusing and incomplete for rear mounting. First instruction: measure 1 1/4" up side of drawer and screw in the front portion then level to the rear. What if the drawer is not sitting level? Purchased the plastic rear mount hardware: using that hardware and following instructions the drawer hit the top or the drawer opening. I had the move the hardware on the drawer to 1 1/2". Worked perfectly. During installation the little red locking latch fell out. It was easy to reinstall since I had a good one to copy, No measurement was given if the cabinet was deeper than the drawer. My cavity is about 4" deeper than the drawer and the rear mount hardware is just 2". Made my own rear mount hardware and it works great. The preload for the slide evidently unloaded at some point. I had to look at other customers comments to discover how to preload again. Other than the instructions being incomplete and confusing once I got the drawer installed it worked perfectly. I am happy with the full opening and the soft closing,

One plastic "catch" popped out during install (red part in pix). Fixed it, but why should I have had to? Aside from that, they installed easily enough- but took lots of fiddling to get right once installed. I had too much time invested to go with a different slide set, but will not buy these for the remaining drawers. Still stiff after lots of adjustment- probably will loosen with time- I hope???

Make sure you follow the instruction to a tee and investigate on-line on how to resolve soft close slides. Unless you are matching others in your kitchen, closet or den, the soft close is not necessary. Just put the rubber bumpers on the door and your good to go without the soft close.
