Q:Can this be mounted on a vinyl gate? These appear to be wood screws. Does it come screws appropriate for vinyl?

Answer This Question
A: I used this on a vinyl gate without incident but, I always cut and shape wood to fit inside the vinyl parts to hold the screws firmly. Even screws specifically marked for vinyl will eventually fail with constant use.

A: The Everbilt 18 in. Black Cane Bolt can be mounted on vinyl with the appropriate fasteners. The fasteners included are for wood. Vinyl applications may require metal screws.

A: Yes we mounted this on a vinyl gate with the screws it came without any issues. It works fine.

A: The screws included will not hold well in vinyl. I recommend if using on vinyl gate that you use carriage bolts or similar that would go completely thru with nuts and washers.

Bad Design
As is the case with all of the bad reviews given, no way to keep the cane up once you opening the gate. I did solve the issue by using the 3rd holder and cutting out a section of the hole and mounting it horizontally for the handle of the cane rests in it.

Read the reviews -- know what you are getting in to. Its not a terrible product, it just doesn't match the description -- which may make it not exactly suitable for what you need it to do. There are instructions on the package. The instructions should tell you to empty all contents from the package then throw it (the instructions) away. Whatever the instructions on the package are for, they sure aren't for this product. The instructions claim there are two "projections" on the bolt. I bought two and both were completely smooth. Many other reviewers report the same thing. Between the photos and the reviews, I was confident that these would work as props to hold open shed doors -- and they do that just fine. I mounted one cane on the inside of each door away from the hinge through two brackets so the bottom could engage into the landscaping rocks around the shed. The third bracket, I bent slightly and mounted it so that picking up the cane and dropping the short end onto the bracket, the cane would be held up high enough so that the door will close. In short, these perform fine for what I need them to do, just study the photos closely to decide if they will work for what you want them to do.

Fixed the problem with cane bolt not staying in “UP” position
I had the same problem as most people reviewing this product. I took a small file and filed the inside, small flanges that the bolt tabs can NOT pass through. Filed down the two tiny tabs on (R) right side of silver bracket as you look at the gate. Would be (L) left tabs if doing a right hinge mounted gate. This allows the large tabs on the bolt to pass through and in turning the cane bolt 90 degrees it locks in position in the UP Position. Five minutes with a hobby file and voila, works like a charm.

There is a small video provided through Home Depot's website that gives you a good idea how this is installed. Only two of the angled holders actually hold the 18 inch bolt. The third is used to hold it up from the ground when you move the gate. It is well built. The #10 wood screws are at least 1 1/2 inches long so it should be installed with a 2x4 stud behind the picket. You probably want to go about 6 inches in the ground. It works great for me and looks good. I would have selected 5 stars except for the confusing documentation containing the 12 inch Everbilt cane rod.

Bolt doesn't have a stop to hold it up like most bolts, so used one of the 3 supports as a rest when it is lifted up. But it is inconvenient. Otherwise bolt is solid.

Defective
Wasted trip to HD again. 60 miles round trip to find out I bought a defective item. There are NO "PROJECTIONS" on the bolt to keep in raised position per the instructions. Too bad there are no other options for hardware shopping.
