How do you tell what size? ½” ¾” or 1 ½” ?

Asked by Gorgo July 11, 2020

Answers

This is not a technical answer, but for the overlay measurement, you need to measure how much the cabinet doors overlap the face of the cabinet. With the doors closed -- which is the tricky part -- you need to measure from the edge of the cabinet opening to the outer edge of the door. You can adjust the hinge to move the door slightly left and right, and up and down, so there's a little tolerance if you are off a little.

A direct replacement for my current cabinet hinge and was able to immediately transform kitchen cabinet doors to Soft Close. An inexpensive, fast & easy upgrade. I suggest trying 1x Hinge for smaller doors (<18"), add a second hinge for larger doors.

I used these recently for cabinet doors I made for built in bookcases. Make sure you have or get the right Forstner bit for the cabinet door holes and drill to the right depth then the rest is simple.

These days if you're going to build cabinets soft close hinges are a must, why have cabinet doors slamming shut when you can use soft close hinges and they will close silently? There are lots of options when you look for soft close hinges and I like these compact ones because they mount easily to the face frame and they don't extend back into the cabinet like others do. The closing force is adjustable too.

These hinges worked great for my needs. I used them on a some 2x that I am using as a partition for a privacy screen. They worked well, the soft close prevents the two sides from slamming into each other which is great. I have a hinge template kit which consisted of a 35mm forstner bit, and a template guide to layout the markings(for the hole and the screw) this worked perfectly with it which is good, as I bought the job a year ago and never had a chance to use it, so I am glad I was able to put that to good use. If you do not already know make the sure the width is more than 1/2" since you will have to drill the 35mm hole 1/2 deep for the hinge. As I get older I appreciate the simple things in life, they mean so much to me now. I love that this kit comes with in a zip loc bag as oppose to a regular plastic bag. This is allows you to keep everything together in case you cannot complete your task in one shot. For me, whenever I work with screw, I try to locate something to keep them in so I can keep them together and not lose them. Glad to know they were one step ahead of me

Works to keep the kids from slamming cabinet doors, and keeping them from bouncing if (when) they do. They are a direct bolt-in replacement for existing hinges. We replaced one or 2 of the regular hinges, depending on the door size. There is an adjustment lever on the hinge. Unfortunately, it only sets when the mechanism starts slowing the door, not the close rate, by effectively locking the damper halfway in. I have several different size cabinet doors in my kitchen, and I cannot get them all to close the same way with these hinges. There were no installation or adjustment instructions included, though it's easy enough to figure out. Not sure about the durability of the plastic damper, but only time will tell. I would buy these again, but would buy something more adjustable if I could find it.

I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I bought these, other than knowing soft-close cabinets are awesome and I wanted them haha. I purchased the wrong size at first (1 1/4" overlay). Which is how much your cabinet doors overlap with the cabinet frame, btw... Drilling the hole to make the hardware set flush was a little nerve-wracking at first but surprisingly easy. I LOVE that you can make slight adjustments after mounting the door. Slightly out or in, side to side, up or down. And I mean sliiiight. Maybe 1/8" at most. But it makes a difference. Additionally, you can also adjust how soft you want the soft close with 3 click settings. Which is nice for smaller or larger cabinet doors, depending on the weight. My only struggle was the kitchen I'm updating is about 30+ years old. Whoever installed the cabinets did a 1/4" overlay, which I couldn't find that size soft-close hardware... Which is a narrow window to work with. I used the 1/2" and drilled new pilot holes in the cabinet frame to compensate a little. Then set the hardware slightly outside the cabinet door (showing a little) but it was the only way without shimming every door frame.
