This is NOT a safety cable for a tension spring, it's a lift cable for a torsion spring door.

What is the actual length of the cable?

It's 8' 6 1/2" from inside loop of eye to inner end of stop. I just measured it. It's a torsion spring cable designed for a common 7' garage door installation. Mine broke, and this is nearly identical to the length of the one that's being replaced (I'm replacing both, only one broke.) Remember to get some 1/2" steel bars to de-tension the springs.

Is the hardware included to attach the end without the loop?

The tail end has a stop on it which typically slots into the cable drum.

cables for 8 ft door need to be longer than 96 "-think about 114"?

The item title is deceiving. It is not for an 8 foot door, it is an 8 foot long 96 inch cable.

Most residential garage doors are 7 foot high will this cable still work for 7 foot door.

The cable itself is as good as it gets, but the end links are not pressured appropriately so they can easily came off. One cable has failed exactly like that causing the garage door to fall.

These cables worked perfectly for my 7 ft garage door even though the loops were larger than what I replaced. You don't need to tape the loops or anything - just make sure your garage door has the right amount of tension. There's plenty of info about this on the web, but basically you either use vise grips to slightly turn the bar and loop back over the wheel, or to loosen the screws and adjust the wheel itself. I replaced the jacked up cable in the attached image with this part. This is a copy/paste from a Q&A I answered earlier. Just trying to help.

Purchased these cables as replacements for my garage door cables that broke. Installation was easy due to the large hoops for the door, but it came as a catch 22 as they would often come off the hook. The solution? Wrapped some masking tape around the rest of the hoop so that it wouldn't come off! Haven't had too many issues since.

THESE ARE NOT....
These are safety cables for extension springs not extension cables for the sides of a door on torsion spring system. This would explain why they snapped as soon as you put them on. There are safety cables and there are extension cables.
