Questions & Answers

is this latch lockable by padlock?

would like a lockable latch if possible.
Asked by: Aaron
Yes. Just make sure the metal loop of the lock can fit through the hole... some bigger locks may not fit, but an average size lock should fit easily.

How do you open the latch from the other side of the gate? Is there an attachment that goes through to the other side?
Asked by: Bennie
Hook a string or wire to the hole at the top of latch and run to the other side of the gate. Simply pull on the attachment and the latch releases. If the gate isn't to tall you can simply reach over the top and manually flip the latch while pushing the gate open.

replacing the brass pin

It broke and I can not seem to find something to replace it with. What size bolt and nut would I need to put something that will last on the gate. I need to slide something through the holes on the latch and fasten it. Thanks
Asked by: RLM
Can’t you put a handle on the wire on the inside to make it look not so cheap looking, or a latch of some kind to have it look better from the inside? Thanks

I would like to mount this to a steel gate. Will the mounting screws be sufficient or should this be welded?

Asked by: McChopper
The screws that come with the kit are for mounting on wood.

Black Gate Latch is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 62.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Post bends and breaks too easily It doesnt take much to bend the post that sets into the latch. If you close the gate firmly it will bend... if a wind does it then you ca be sure the post will bend conpletely backwards. Mine recently broke after maybe three months of use

Beware, check the metal rivet (from time to time) that connects the latch to the base, because ours rusted out and the latch fell off, which caused the gate to open... I was outside with our two 17-lb dogs yesterday when I noticed them smelling by the gate and that it was partially open, kept mostly closed by a brick I placed on the outside of the gate in case the latch ever became loose. That's when I noticed the rivet was rusted and broken. If it wasn't for that brick my dogs would have probably been lost. The latch was purchased on 09/03/16 and broke on 07/11/18, not quite two years. I never thought it would rust out. I checked the other latch we bought at the same time that was installed on the opposite gate and that is showing some rust so that will need to be replaced too. In the interim we're lucky to still have our dogs and that we had a nut and bolt that fit to do a temporary fix.
