Q:I?ve installed two of these on one gate, one at the top one at the bottom. Both latches will not hold. Jerking the gate will cause the latches to pop open, even though I can see the latch is properly seated. Is this normal?

    Answer This Question

A:  This happened to me, too, and many of the reviews mention this. I suggest avoiding this latch

    by|May 15, 2022

A:  This is not a normal occurrence. Performance results of the Everbilt Black Heavy Duty Gate Latch can vary depending on use and installation. It is suggested to lock using the included locking hole feature which can be used with a padlock.

Do not buy! Fatal design flaw means it can't latch properly
This latch is totally useless due to a major design flaw. The "tooth" that sticks down from the latch to hold the keeper bar in place is shaped so that as the gate moves in the wind, it very easily pops the bar loose and the gate swings open. You can see in the second photo what a properly designed latch looks like - the notch that the bar fits into curves a little back so that if the bar pushes against it, it holds it shut rather than popping open.

Sturdy latch, but the L post that connects into the 'locking' mechanism has to align just perfectly. It would be 5 starts if the L post was either facing up/down or if movable.

                  Good so far
It hasonly been three weeks since I installed this latch, but it has been perfect so far. The latch feels solid and doesn't sound cheap and loose when opening or closing the gate. I installed it on the inside of my new in-swinging 6ft. wood gate. I paired it with a gate latch wire that runs through a hole so you can unlock it from the front side. The bar has a curve at the end to keep it from having too much slack to move forward and back so that's nice. Also the bar side can sort of act like a handle to place your fingers on/around when using your thumb to unlatch.

                  Failed after 3 months
It is all steel except for one brass part. That part failed from corrosion after 3 months of very light use. Worked well until it broke.

                    Does not latch well
Install this latch on my girlfriends fence and the latching mechanism does not hold. It is a piece of short straight metal that allows the the metal rod to easily come out of the latch with any quick push, like a dog jumping on the fence.

                      Does not latch securely
If you shake the gate hard enough like when a German Shepard jumps on the fence it will open. The metal latch that comes down needs to be a little longer or curved to catch the rod securely.

Terrible product, waste of my time to install it.
The latch does not hold. Shortly after installing it, the wind blew the gate open. I tried to make adjustments to see if it would eventually hold, but that didn't work either. The dogs pushed the gate open as well. The screws are terrible quality. They rounded off easily, even with a brand-new bit. I don't write many reviews but want to save everyone time and money.

                          Doesn't stay latched
It fails at doing what it was made to do, latch a gate closed. Any small bit of shaking, wind, etc and the latch opens. I thought maybe I got a bad one, so I exchanged for a new one. Same issue. Bought another brand that looks identical from the big "A" retailer, same issue. Basically, all these "heavy duty" style ones dont hold. Junk
