For this Handrail Bracket the distance between the top 2 wall screws (center to center) is 0.79" and top screw to bottom screw is 1.57". This bracket appears to be smaller than your old bracket so new holes would need to be drilled.

How much space would this give the handrail from the wall?

Asked by MKF July 14, 2020

Answer

The spacing would depend on the dimensions of the handrail. On a 1-3/4 inch handrail, there is 1-1/2 inches of clearance remaining between the wall and the handrail after installation.

Install the handrail bracket into wall stud using #10x1-1/2” screws (3pcs) and secure handrail using #10x1” (2pcs). For toggle bolt we suggest to using 3/16” and length base drywall thickness.

When wall mounting, do you place one on each stud for the length of the rail?

Asked by Paul January 31, 2020

Answer

This handrail bracket should be installed in studs with no more than 48 inches between brackets. The handrail should not extend more than 24 inches from the last bracket.

I don't see why they wouldn't hold up just fine outdoors. They're metal and very well made.

The gap depends on the angle of the railing. There will be some gap if the railing is parallel to the floor. Be sure all fasteners are secure.

Are the screws also stainless steel that come with the Stainless Steel brackets?

Yes, they are. I have used these for outdoor handrails in New England for about four years now. Fit and finish are fine. No rusting at all.

The description of this bracket states that it is rated for 500lbs. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Crown-Bolt-Satin-Nickel-Handrail-Bracket-15547/202033998 However, the package it comes in states a rating of 250lbs. I bought these brackets specifically for the high weight limit. HD has no other handrail brackets of this type with a rating over 250lbs. If you need a stronger bracket, you will have to get it elsewhere.

Super-disappointed. This brass handrail bracket product (which I purchased in my local Home Depot) was manufactured so poorly it doesn't function properly. The rail part of the bracket doesn't sit flush against the rail and there is a significant gap between its two screw holes and the rail surface. I am pretty sure its lousy manufacturing and not just a perception issue on my part, because the rail part has a curve that looks more like a "V" than a "U" as shown on both these online pictures and on the old brass handrail I have at home that I was replacing. If you see this part in the store, watch out for / beware that "V" shape. You can tell it doesn't work by merely sticking the two parts together and laying them against any surface without even attaching any screws to anything. Disappointing.
