Questions & Answers

how do I stop the beeeping?

I have changed the batteries and tested, but the main detector will not quit beeping.
Asked by: Diane
what you have to do is disconnect the power to the unit by unplugging the wires in the back. then removed the old battery and (VERY IMPORTANT) you wait for the last beep from the unit. there is a capacitor that holds the last charge almost like a memory. after that beep you reconnect the unit and install new battery. the beep should stop. the unit is not faulty. My smoke alarm was installed in 2001. Some of my alarms are original and others have been replaced at some point. My detectors keep going off. I replaced all of the alarms with new batteries and I am still experiencing all of my detectors going off at random intervolves. It seems to be random anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes. All detectors have green lights. Some of the detectors have red lights flashing. Please help. Thanks Lujack

My smoke alarms keep beeping even though it unplug?
Asked by: Watchdog
Their might be a small capacitor in this unit that stores a small amount of energy as I unplugged and removed the battery and had the unit chirp in my hand . I pushed the button on the unit to make it chirp and also to drain what little energy it had left . After that no more chirp . Then I replaced the unit

Customer Reviews

FireX Hardwire Smoke Detector with 9V Battery Backup and Front Load Battery Door is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 1007.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from FireX 120V w/ Battery Backup I noticed the manufacturer date on my existing FireX smoke detectors was June, 2000 and they were now 16 years old, another words, it's time to replace them. Code requires 120V and linked detectors in the bedrooms. That is why I selected this particular model. I removed the old units and their bases. The bases are different but it's just a matter of loosening the 2 screws and replacing the base. The wiring "connector", not the wiring, is different so I did need to rewire it in the box. That's when I found the previous owner never hooked up the alarm link wiring. Replacing the alarms was worth the discovery so I could correct it. The directions also give ambient operating temperature ranges. Since this is my cottage, I set the temp at 50 when I'm not there in the winter and close one room door so it doesn't get heat. Turns out temps below 40 drain the battery. Another lesson learned with good instructions. I also like the battery access on the outside of the unit. The old was inside.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from FireX Smoke Alarm My house is 17 years old and ten FireX smoke alarms were installed on two floors. One smoke alarm was broken and had to be replaced. I replaced it with a FireX unit from Home Depot, and the other units started beeping. I talked to a man at Home Depot, and he thought that all of the units on the second floor were hooked together and that I would have to replace the addition five units on the second floor. I replaced the other units, but the smoke alarms still beeped, I called Kidde, and they told me that the units on the first floor would also have to be replaced because all of the smoke alarms are connected together, and that the 17 year old units are not compatible with the newer units. I replaced the four units on the first floor, and that fixed my beeping problems. I purchased the $15 FireX unit because I had a suspicion that I would have to replace all of the ten units. Kidde's customer service is the best that I have every dealt with! I am very happy with their product and customer service.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Quality out of Box Purchased a six pack of these smoke detectors to replace the ones that were in my house. They were going ob twelve years old, so hence the replacement. After installing them and accomplishing the ops checks, I found that one of them did not interconnect with all the others, took it down checked the wiring, reinstalled, still the same problem. I took another one from another room and tried it, same problem. I then took it down re-stripped the wires and reinstalled again, same problem. Swapped out another from another room and it worked. Went through this scenario numerous times, only to find two of them bad. I then purchased another six pack to replace all of them, same scenario, went through all the motions again, only to find another two bad. Four bad verifiable detectors out of two different lots, not acceptable. I will be swapping these out with First Alert as soon as I can and sending these back to HD.

Make sure you check the contents before you purchase this from HD. I found the one I bought had been used as the smoke detector had white paint on the side of the case. I also found when trying to exchange it the nect one I picked was missing the a/c wire housing.

Easy to install and almost “plug ‘n play”. After we decided to put our condo on the market, we decided to upgrade our original 2003 FireX hard wired smoke alarms with this Kidde FireX smoke detector. The ion-based smoke detector is more sensitive than a typical detector as they sense smoke particles from a fast moving fire. Once installed, you can press the button to test the alarm. It sounds an 85 db alarm and also triggers the ‘Fire’ voice alert on the other Kidde KN-COSM-IBA Carbon Monoxide/Smoke detectors that we also have connected to these detectors. The detector also has an LED indicator which is green when the detector is working properly and then flashes red when the alarm activates or needs a new battery. The alarm also ‘chirps’ when the batteries is need replacing. Installation was easy. In our case, we have both circular and oblong electrical boxes in the ceiling that house the mains wiring for the detectors. Despite the fact that the detector mounting plates are different with the mounting plate on the new detector being larger, they are easy to switch over by loosening the two screws in the electrical box. The second aspect that is different is the electrical connector pigtail on the back of the detector. It still has three wires (hot, neutral and interconnect) and is also easy to change over. In my case I just had to disconnect the wire nuts and connect the new pigtail. After mounting the detector on the ceiling you insert the 9v backup battery (included with the detector). The unit is warrantied for 5 years and has a label on the side where you can write the installation month/year and the replacement month/year.

Easy to install, even though the pin clip didn't fit the old wiring connector. I mis-counted, though....I purchased six (6) of them, but I have seven (7) older units. Will have to buy one more!
