Questions & Answers

How big of branches does the blade cut?

Asked by: Anonymous
Spent 2hr working on some large branches. Tackled a few 6-8 inch ones and went up to 12inches. Takes an exceeding long period of time with the large ones but doable. Slow and steady. Splitting can be a problem because undercutting is very hard. Surprisingly good tool.

Can the pruner portion be remove so just the saw blade is left? Don’t want nor need pruner or the weight it adds.

Asked by: Robert
No, the blade attaches to the pruning mechanism. You can remove the blade but not the pruning mechanism.

is this saw good for cutting next to power lines?
Asked by: mike
Sure it is but nobody should be taking that kind of risk. Call your local energy company and ask them to send out a crew who are trained to cut branches of trees safely around power lines.

1.250 in. Cut Capacity Steel Cutting Blade Steel 15 in. Saw, Fiberglass and Alum Pole, 16 ft. Tree Pruner is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 222.

Excellent lopper; pulls/cuts easily and the oval tube shape doesn't flex noticeably like the previous pole lopper I had which had a round tube. The shaft extends and locks easily. I have not had an opportunity to use the saw blade yet, but the hook on the end of the blade is great for pulling down branches (the packaging says the hook keeps the blade from coming out of the cut while sawing, which seems likely). My only minor complaint is the with saw blade in position I can't put it in my pickup bed; however, I can pivot the blade (like new packaging) by undoing the nut and then it (barely) fits in the bed. It would also be nice if there was a blade guard available (even if extra purchase), but on my old pole saw I just folded and duct-taped a section of newspaper around the blade and it worked fine and was cheap. Price was also less than comparable items at several other stores. I have always been very satisfied with every Fiskars tool I have purchased.

Although It has many innovative ideas, overall I feel it failed in the real world. Likes: The sharp hooked end of the saw blade Dislikes: When fully extended, the pole wobbles uncontrollably. The manufacturer states the oval-shaped pole greatly reduces flex. The oval shape pole is easier to hold and rotate, but I found the side-to-side flex unacceptable. The secure double locking system failed on me several times. The top pole came loose and I had to climb a ladder to retrieve it. Wear gloves if you intend to use the pruner as the cord is not easy to pull. You will have rope burns within a few minutes. The chain drive pruner blade doesn't fully retract. Cutting twigs under 1/2" diameter is no problem as they fit into the mouth of the lopper. Anything larger and you will have to lower the pruner and move the blade for each cut. I didn't find it binding and suspect the return spring has insufficient pulling power.

For some reason, Fiskars changed the designed of the tree pruning blade into a scissor type cutter that flexes when you attempt to cut limbs 1.25" in diameter. It starts to cut then flexes to allow wood to wedge in between the blade and cutting surface. When this happens, the pruner gets stuck on the limb. Not good.

It was the longest one you can buy. I like the way the pole itself is constructed. Like the slide lock method. But to be honest the blade saw design is horrible. Not your typical wood saw style. Takes a long time to cut a branch.

I am 80 years old and the advantage leverage of the 3 times reduction in pull on rope make cutting limbs very easy and quick. I loosened the nut on outside poles and slip the inside aluminum pole and pruner out of the two outside fiberglass poles for most work up to 12 feet or so. It is so much lighter, still very strong and stable to use this way and works just as well. However for really tall limbs, it can reach great heights using all poles included. The advantage of this larger pruner, is the extra 3 times reduction in pulling force needed to cut limbs. All the smaller Fiscars only have 2 times reduction in pulling force. This makes cutting oak and hard wood types much easer. They are so well made and have a lifetime warrenty.

It's advertised to cut "faster", but doesn't seem to cut faster than my 30 year old pole saw when it was newer (now completely worn out, with compatible replacement parts no longer available). The blade angle could be greater to allow more downward force without standing so far away or cutting on the side of the limbs. It works well to full extension, and the much more rigid pole is notably helpful, compared to older fiberglass/PVC. The lopper blade appears to be good, and works well, but it is attached to a plastic frame, and relies on cutting edge sharpness for cutting, rather than shearing. The lopper strap webbing and recoil spring are smooth with adequate force applied, but doesn't always fully retract. Green branches cut easily, while dead/dry branches will occasionally seize the lopper blade. It loses one star due to extensive use of plastic, and the price, as compared to slightly smaller saws. Otherwise, it works as advertised. Time will tell, but I am currently pleased with it.

I have so many trees in my yard that I had to do something to lower the cost of a professional coming out because it was multiple trees. I got started and found it so easy to use that I pruned and pruned for about 3 hours straight. I did the alley for over grown bushes and all. It was very easy to handle as I have really small hands and am pretty average height for a female so basically short and can't reach much. I would rec commend this to anyone and I'm going back for the other pruner as this one is hard to use around wires because the saw blade doesn't move or retract in any way. Well worth the money. Glad I purchased.

The unit has 2 telescopic extensions that easily lock into place. The lopper works great and makes clean, easy cuts. And the hook at the end of the saw keeps the blade in the cut. There was some play in the saw when it was in the open position. However I was able to fix that by putting a washer between the wingnut and blade. I used it to cut a 4.5" branch. It took a bit of time to get the right position, but once I figured out the best angle to take everything went ok. I just had to keep at it though. The saw did bind near the bottom of the cut, but that's physics, not the product. Fortunately I was able to free the saw from the opposite direction and finished the cut from that side. Perhaps they could make a secondary saw blade designed to cut under the branch. That might alleviate this problem. I do wish there was a way to wrap the lopper's pulley cord up, as it tends to get in the way when using the saw.
