Questions & Answers

what causes our fluid master 400 model to flush periodically on it's own

every so often our toilet flushes it self. It is not a full flush but would like to know why this is happening.
Asked by: vonnie
Its most likely the flapper is leaking water causing the fill valve to flush whenever the water level drops. I would recommend replacing the rubber flapper. Its fairly inexpensive and very easy to install.

how to adjust water in tank

Asked by: fix yer self
There are two methods of setting the fill level when you install this kit. The height of the fill valve assembly must be set before you attach it to the tank, this adjustment is described in the installation instructions, it requires rotating the upper and lower sections of the fill valve assembly to extend or retract the top part. No tools are needed for that adjustment, but it MUST be done before installing the fill valve in the tank. After the fill valve is installed there is an adjustment on the side of the float that allows raising or lowering the fill level a bit. But that setting can only cover a range of about two inches. The instruction sheet gives the details on this adjustment.

Is this normal that you have to keep HOLDING the knob for a complete FLUSH?

My good old toilet flasher worked this way - you press the knob and go away. This one seems to be you press, HOLD (and watch and wait) until it's done, otherwise flush is not complete. REALLY? Not sure but If that's how it's supposed to be then there's something wrong with them (or us)?
Asked by: jnzz001
No, holding the lever should not be needed, That is a chain adjustment problem, most likely that the chain is not lifting the flapper far enough. so the chain needs to be a bit shorter.. If the flapper is not lifted high enough the flow of water will pull it back down as soon as the lever is released. The chain needs to have only a small bit of slack when the flapper is closed and the lever is released.

toilet, how can replace the sealant ruber ring at the bottom of the water tank, without breaking the plastic pipe that need to be removed

the plastic pipe is one piece that holds the flaper
Asked by: alex
To replace the rubber seal ring the first step is to close the water supply valve external to the toilet. Then drain the tank by flushing, and use a towel to remove the rest of the water. Then disconnect the water supply tube. After that, remove the bolts that hold the tank onto the base. there are either two or three bolts, depending on the model. Lift the tank off, and turn it upside down. There is a large nut holding the plastic pipe with the rubber seal in place. Unscrew the nut and remove the old assembly. Install the replacement following the directions provided, and re-assemble the tank to the base. Be very careful to not over-tighten the bolts doing this because it is possible to break either the tank or the base. The bolts should be just tight enough so that the tank does not wobble, or tilt, on the base.

Complete Toilet Repair Kit is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 378.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked Perfectly On 15 Year Old Kohler 1.6 GPF My parents have a 15 year old Kohler 1.6 toilet that they wanted new internals on, so we bought this kit. Installation was easy, assuming you're comfortable with basic plumbing skills (i.e. not overtightening connections). The directions are good and you can watch installation videos on YouTube for the individual parts (flush valve, fill valve, etc.) Applying logic along the way helps at each step (i.e. make sure flush valve is situated before tightening in such a way that it doesn't interfere with tighening the tank to bowl connection bolts). After turning angle stop back on, no leaks at all (knock wood), and a perfect flush. It was nice to be able to clean up the tank and bowl after separating the two. Small rust spot from the previous hardware at bottom of tank, but some light sanding with 120 paper dissolved it quickly. Tank and bowl look like new now. I've had great luck with Fluidmaster fill valves in the past, and this complete kit doesn't appear to be any different in its build quality. Definitely recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fluidmaster Model # 400AKRP10 I bought the Fluidmaster Model # 400AKRP10 a few days ago and subsequently installed it. The instructions are meticulous and detailed. I am only moderately handy but the instructions helped me install the unit such that my toilet is working again with no leaks (it has been a few days). My biggest complaint with this product is that it should clearly state on the package that Kohler toilets require a separate toilet-to-tank purchase, since the Kohler toilet I own has 3 bolts. I had done my research beforehand, so I knew I needed the Kohler 3-bolt toilet-to-tank product, but this research took me quite a while. Although the detailed directions noted that some Kohler toilets required a different part, this should have been clearly stated on the outside of the package. I also purchased the Kohler part (KOHLER Model # K-GP51487, Triangle Tank Gasket with Bolts for Most Two-Piece Toilets) at Home Depot. Time will tell if the Fluidmaster system is a durable, reliable replacement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked fine for me..but a critical step was not in the instructions. I purchased this kit to rework the insides of an old Mansfield toilet. All of the parts were included and instructions were fairly detailed. One step that should be included in the instructions, but was not. The overflow tube (the one that the fill hose attaches to) that is part of the flush valve is fairly long, and may need to be trimmed down on some tanks. If it is not trimmed to the proper height (just above the waterline), you could have a flood if they fill valve were to leak or stick open. The reason for this is due to the water reaching the hole in the side of the tank for the handle before it reaches the height of the overflow tube. Trimming it to a height between that of the handle hole and the full water line allows any excess water to safely drain through the toilet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Product BUT.......... I'm a middle-aged female, DIYer and purchased this product based on the need AND the product reviews. The product arrived in a decent time frame however, I caution that you retain all of your old parts until you have completed the installation and tested the toilet several times. The problems I encountered were a) the adjustable water fill valve (I believe this is the accurate term) was defective - it was stuck at the lowest height and would not extend out, and b) the nuts included to attach the tank to the toilet were way too small and actually continued inside of the hole into the tank area so I would have been out of luck had I not saved the original nuts for reuse. I ended up using the original water fill valve and nuts to complete the installation. Happily, I didn't have any leaks and everything else went smoothly. I have to add that I did use You Tube's video on Replacing Toilet Tank Inside Parts which made thing effortless. I saved $150.00 and am so proud I was able to perform the repair myself. The kit was perfect and quite affordable.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Definitely NOT Universal Check the inside of your toilet tank. If it has the Gerber label, You may have problems (leaking because the gasket is too small.) The tank to toilet gasket that comes with my kit did NOT fit my toilet tank. Buy a gasket kit for GERBER toilets. (The rest of the kit WILL work, though.). Written instructions are TERRIBLE-just watch the manufacturer's installation video and save yourself some time. I had to pick up my separate gasket kit (Item # 247754) at Lowe's.
