Questions & Answers

Why does my toilet run for 3-5 seconds every 5 minutes or so even when I don't flush

Asked by: Steve
There is another issue which is not mentioned by any one and surprisingly it appears to the issue with many ball floats when the screw holding up the float gets rusty. 1) If the water supply is stopped to the tank and the tank level does not drop. Then it would not be a flapper problem. 2) If the water supply is on and water level goes up and overflows thru the central spout and down into the bowl, then it is the problem with the fill tube and the float?

Did I ruin the fill valve by moving the lock ring?

If I pushed up the lock ring and pulled the threaded shank completely out of the valve body but then reinstalled it and re-seated the lock ring, can I expect it to be OK or did I damage anything?
Asked by: Karen
Should be fine, because: I wasn't able to adjust the height by turning (un/screwing) the two parts as instructed, so I took it back to HD. The clerk did exactly as you did; just yanked the two tubes apart. We reassembled it, adjusted to correct height, installed it, and after 3 yrs, no problems.

How tall is the valve. Many tanks are tall and the "universal toilet fill valve" is so short that it fills one half tank and "thus it is a half flush"!!!
Asked by: MAC
The height of the valve is adjustable.

Will this work on a discontinued Kohler two piece toilet that is over twenty years old? There seems to be no replacement parts for it. Model K3397-0
Asked by: Rey
Vahandyman is spot-on. The toilet model you stated ( K3397-0 San Raphael ) is a Kohler one-piece lowboy style with unique features (rim flush). The Fluidmaster is not designed for this application. The kit mentioned by vanhandyman is the way to go.

I can do it blindfolded now :) I always have at least 1-2 spare ones in my tool bag. 1. Shut off the water supply behind the toilet. (you may run into a problem here since a lot of shut off valves don't work when you need it to. If so, shut it off at the main water line) 2. flush the toilet 3. unscrew the water supply line going into the toilet(if the line looks pretty old, now is a good time to change it out) 4. optional- shop vac any remaining water out of the tank, or use a couple towels to drain it 5. loosen and remove the nut holding the old fill valve in place. clean under and above the exposed hole 6. insert new fill valve with rubber gasket inserted on top. 7. tighten at the bottom and reattach the supply lines, turn on water supply, adjust the black stick on the fill valve for water level(it's pretty cheap feeling so go easy on it)

I am 71 years old and have used the Fluidmaster since I bought my first home some 48 years ago. Why? They are pretty much indestructable, they are super easy to install (except when you have a Tojo brand toilet), and the instructions are great. The tools needed to install? Maybe a pair of slipjaw pliers. Most of the device is just hand tighten the nuts. The instructions are even easier than they used to be. I wish all plumbing parts were as easy to install as those made by Fluidmaster! Great product, great price.

I have used them before but seemed to have done a better job at understanding and following the instructions this time and it is even better. just installed it 2 weeks ago. A friend helped me and it went better. This time I cut the little fill tubing shorter and it is better. I never did that before but by just cutting it a little at a time I got it to the right size. We went step by step. and I bought the supply line hose that is made by fluidmaster and it works better. easier to install.

This valve was easily assembled and installed by this senior citizen great grandma. The directions were clear. The only thing I did differently from the instructions was in getting all of the residual water out of the tank before removing the faulty valve. I used a small shop vacuum on the wet setting.

This replaced an old brass unit that was slow filling (like 10 minutes) this item now fills the tank in mere less than a minute and does it quietly. My wife is happy, so inturn,, I'm happy. This is a great great buy. The toilet is a bit dated, by 24 years, but it flushed like a brand new toilet!

I had to replace a old toilet fill valve in my kids bathroom with a new universal toilet valve. It took approximately 30 minutes from start to finish with my son. The toilet was filling/leaking more than I wanted it to, so I started with the fill valve, and shortly knew I needed to replace the other parts, Please note that from my original installation to this replacement, the designs have changed and the water supply compression "plug" (or the shaft size on the fill valve) is LARGER, and I had to make another trip to the store. I was searching for the part, and could not find it and a kindly Home Depot employee stopped their work and helped me find the part! I would say Fluid master needs to include a "current" compression plug with the materials. All that said, Fluidmaster does more good products!

One of them performed as expected with no issues. However, the second valve I installed had this curious issue where the float would rise shutting of the valve but over the course of about 20 - 30 seconds, the float would "drift" downward and sink within the water. This would then cause the water value to reopen and run continuously. It almost seems as though there may have been a manufacturing issue with this assembly regarding the float's buoyancy. Contacted the "live chat" to explain my issue. Got the canned response of "ghost flushing". Irritating but since it is only a $10 part, I am just going to let it go and buy a replacement from a different manufacturer (or perhaps attach a cork to the float assembly to give it more buoyancy. (Yes, I adjusted the water tank height and the height of the "stem". It is at the same level as the float valve that works perfectly fine and on the same model of toilet.)
