Questions & Answers

Why does my toilet run for 3-5 seconds every 5 minutes or so even when I don't flush

Asked by: Steve
There is another issue which is not mentioned by any one and surprisingly it appears to the issue with many ball floats when the screw holding up the float gets rusty. 1) If the water supply is stopped to the tank and the tank level does not drop. Then it would not be a flapper problem. 2) If the water supply is on and water level goes up and overflows thru the central spout and down into the bowl, then it is the problem with the fill tube and the float?

Did I ruin the fill valve by moving the lock ring?

If I pushed up the lock ring and pulled the threaded shank completely out of the valve body but then reinstalled it and re-seated the lock ring, can I expect it to be OK or did I damage anything?
Asked by: Karen
Should be fine, because: I wasn't able to adjust the height by turning (un/screwing) the two parts as instructed, so I took it back to HD. The clerk did exactly as you did; just yanked the two tubes apart. We reassembled it, adjusted to correct height, installed it, and after 3 yrs, no problems.

How tall is the valve. Many tanks are tall and the "universal toilet fill valve" is so short that it fills one half tank and "thus it is a half flush"!!!
Asked by: MAC
The height of the valve is adjustable.

Will this work on a discontinued Kohler two piece toilet that is over twenty years old? There seems to be no replacement parts for it. Model K3397-0
Asked by: Rey
Vahandyman is spot-on. The toilet model you stated ( K3397-0 San Raphael ) is a Kohler one-piece lowboy style with unique features (rim flush). The Fluidmaster is not designed for this application. The kit mentioned by vanhandyman is the way to go.

I can do it blindfolded now :) I always have at least 1-2 spare ones in my tool bag. 1. Shut off the water supply behind the toilet. (you may run into a problem here since a lot of shut off valves don't work when you need it to. If so, shut it off at the main water line) 2. flush the toilet 3. unscrew the water supply line going into the toilet(if the line looks pretty old, now is a good time to change it out) 4. optional- shop vac any remaining water out of the tank, or use a couple towels to drain it 5. loosen and remove the nut holding the old fill valve in place. clean under and above the exposed hole 6. insert new fill valve with rubber gasket inserted on top. 7. tighten at the bottom and reattach the supply lines, turn on water supply, adjust the black stick on the fill valve for water level(it's pretty cheap feeling so go easy on it)

Product was used to replace malfunctioning part. It's been approximately two weeks since the replacement and there has been no recurring issues. This product has also given me the opportunity to reduce the amount of water used in the toilet tank per flush by approx 50%. This will save me "Mega bucks!!!!!" GREAT PRODUCT!!!!!!

Very simple and easy installation process. No problems with the first but the new one continues to fill the tank. I have the valve set to stop filling about an inch from the top of the overflow. It stops but has a slow fill afterwards. One that is not noticed by anyone in the house. If left unused for 2 days, the tank will fill and spill into the over flow drain, wasting water. I will be getting a different type to replace this one within the next couple days. Very disappointed. It seems as though the float might be taking on water??? I threw away the box and the can't find the receipt so this one is likely hitting the dumpster. See photo: shows float totally submerged.

There is a reason why these fill valves are the most often installed in toilets and also used for pool auto-fill systems. They are reliable, simple to install and easy to maintain. Over the years, I must have installed hundreds of these in residential toilets and replaced several pool auto-fill valves and they just work well. One thing I have noticed in recent years is that they no longer include a cap nut and cone washer in the kit due to the common use of water lines that have integral compression fittings. If you are replacing an older type fill valve that has a pex or corrugated water line, you will need to purchase a new cone washer to complete the installation.

I have been using Fluidmaster 400 flush valves ever since they first came out on the market. Installation is always easy and straightforward and they have always worked flawlessly. The last two Fluidmaster flush valves I have purchased, however, have been SO noisy that I was forced to replace them with other brands of flush valves, despite them being brand new. It appears that Fluidmaster's quality control has, quite fittingly, gone down the toilet.

Does what it is suppose to do, fill tank after flush and shut off water till needed again. Old unit failed when seal on top failed and would not reopen to allow anything but a trickle into the tank. Looked like debris cut rubber gasket. This is a better failure mode then to allow water to continue to run into the tank. 4 toilets all have this fill valve and only one failed after 8 years so seems durable. Good price.

The problem is the age of her toilet which requires a large amount of water. After replacement, it was not possible to adjust the fill level; inasmuch as it didn't fill enough to get a good trap clear and then refill the entire toilet basin. She is planning to replace the toilet with a new more efficient model, so we'll live with it.

I was replacing a Fluidmaster toilet fill valve with this new one and was able to reuse the bottom lock nut from the old one. The new valve did not come with a lock nut which may have been a problem if I was using another brand or the old nut was damaged. Installation instructions were simple and easy to follow. I also replaced a metal toilet connector line with a Fluidmaster flexible line. The repair took less than 20 minutes.
