Im confused about the weight if this item. Manufacturer says the 140 FC-i is 19 lbs. Ace says 9 lbs. Is this the same unit or a smaller one that the manufacturer no longer shows? perhaps a typo by Ace?
Asked by: Jerry
The weight of the Forney Easy Weld 140 FC-i is 19lbs. Seems to be a typo on Ace web page. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Depending upon the thickness of the steel, what is the "easiest" way to "adjust" the correct wire speed in order to produce a "fluid" and durable weld.?
Asked by: weld22
You will want the speed as fast as possible without the machine hunting in other words if the wire speed is to fast it will sound and feel choppy so set the speed to maintain about 3/8 of an inch of distance from the tip to the weld if you find yourself getting closer and closer speed up the wire output in small increments until you're running smoothly all its about is practice

It cooks along nicely and its very lightweight if you are using a 2lb spool. I would recommend using .030 wire as suggested but I believe it would run .035 as well with no issues.

Most of my adult life I have had a welder of some type, mostly a 225 amp electric "stick" welder that used regular welding rods. about 20 years ago a friend purchased a wire welder that used gas and solid wire for welding, but you had to lease the bottle from a welding company. I got used to using that welder and really liked the clean almost splatter free welds, but my friend finally needed it back, so since then any welding I have needed to do was with my old stick welder. When i got the opertunity to get this flux core wire welder which does not need gas for welding ( no more gas cylinder lease) I decided to give it a try. Other than the fact that it uses wire with flux inside the wire which requires more clean up between passes and a little practice getting used to running a decent bead, I feel that it will serve my welding needs for as long as I need a welder. If you think that you will be doing welding on a regular basis, you might want to go with the same brand (well made) but the one that uses gas and solid wire for welding, which produces a cleaner weld.

I did some welding in a high school shop class many years ago and enjoyed it. Since then I've been around other welders and always had an itch to try my hand again. This is a great machine to get your feet wet and do some repairs around the house, yard, garage and RV. It would even be a way to express ones creative side making things like weather vanes, whirly-gigs, and artistic lawn sprinklers. It operates on ordinary household 110-120 Volt AC power. There are only 3 controls, on/off, speed, and temperature. It only has a 6 foot cord so you might want to get a good 12 ga. or 10 ga. extension cord. The instructions are well written and easy to understand. Because this doesn't use gas it is easy to get started. You'll need a helmet with the proper dark glass and a pair of welding gloves. Set up is easy and after a few practice welds to get a feel for the wire feed and voltage settings you'll be ready to get to work. I understand this is small as welders go and you're not going to build a trailer frame with it but around the house it will get plenty of use.

And I never used a wire feed. I had a few small repairs and projects around the suburban house, some could not be taken to the nearby general repair shop so this seemed like the best solution. It is 120v so no special 220/240 wiring needed. After getting a mask and digging out leathers, I started experimenting. I was surprised at how easy this worked-- but I needed to really experiment on voltages etc. Watched a lot of videos. Bottom line is I got one thing fixed that needed to be done. Worth the time to (re)learn. Buy it. Practice. Be patient. Take notes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Forney Easy Welder was shipped in a very attractive glossy white double walled cardboard box ... The Forney Easy Welder was shipped in a very attractive glossy white double walled cardboard box with black lettering and the Forney green accents. The product was held within the box utilizing a styrene foam base and top plate with a minimum of 1.5” air gap. All the pieces were overwrapped in poly bags. A quick guide for wire feed speed and voltage settings are affixed on the inside of the cabinet for reference. The manual and reference materials were very easy to read and understand. The manual also has clear pictures to assist in familiarizing yourself with the operation of the welder. The controls on the welder were also clearly labeled and easy to use even with my welding gloves on. The wire spool access compartment has a panel that is very easy to open using a spring-loaded finger latch. The door is hinged at the top and swings open and stays out of the way when loading or making adjustments. This was the first time I have used a wire feed welder and I had no problem adjusting the spool holder, loading the wire into the drive and adjusting the feed-roller tension. It only took about 3 minutes to convert to a 2-pound spool and feed the wire to the end of the welding tip. The ground clamp has hardened chisel like teeth to help ensure a good electrical contact. The clamp opens about 2” to affix to your base material. The ground lead is positive polarity and is about 6 feet long and very flexible. There is a woven copper strap connecting both jaws of the clamp to ensure electrical contact. The power unit is lightweight and portable. The handle on the top also functions as a storage loom for the mains and welding leads. I used the welder for more than 3 hours with a few short breaks. During my session I had no problems or faults with the welder. I was using on the lowest setting and I still burned a few holes in the thin sheet metal I was working with. The only complaint I have is length of the main power cord. I suggest buying the recommended 25-foot, 12-gauge extension cord along with the welder.

This welder uses a flux core wire which is purchased separately. This really simplified the welding process, previously I needed a tank of gas besides. After hooking up a ground clamp it is ready to weld. This light weight unit can easily be carried with one hand yet it achieves a quality weld with good penetration in a single pass.
