Before putting down the composter, I place on the soil, a layer of small grid wire mesh. Failure to do this means moles and rats will burrow from underneath and eat all the good stuff before it can become compost.
As long as you haven't treated your grass and leaves with harmful chemicals, it would be okay to put them in. You wouldn't want to throw compost in your vegetable garden with chemicals not made to be ingested, for example.
one large door found at the front and located at the bottom, for easy removal.
yes, but the lid may freeze shut if the temperature is below 32.
It does not.
You have to buy a compost turner/aerator separately. This doesn't turn or roll.
Slides up then folds down.
It does not smell.
Mine is about 20 feet from the house. The only time that I can smell it is when I'm next to it with the lid open but that's to be expected. It does attract a lot of fruit flies if you are composting fruits & vegetables so be prepared for that when you open the lid.
Nothing will stop a determined bear. That said, this has a robust one piece build with a screw on lid. You do stake it into the ground. More than likely a bear would push this over before it would destroy it. We have allot of bears where I live and I have had no problems- so far.... You never know with bears....
