I am not aware that there is a base unit, nor that is sold separately. The unit includes a Twist locking lid, Harvest Door and the large molded compost bin. There is no base unit. Maybe you are looking at a different unit from the 82 gal. Enviro World Compost Bin by FreeGarden Earth?

You are not composting properly. You need to add layers of black earth and aerate if possible using a pitch fork or an aerating tool. Sounds like you have aerobic bacterial breaking down your compost which must be a stinking mess. Check out how to properly compost.... been doing it successfully For 30+ years. Each spring I empty it out my composters, and have this wonderful black organic material that gives my plants a huge boost in the spring.

does the compost need to be turned ?

Yes. I'd get a compost turner. They have them online also, and FreeGarden has one that works nicely. It's basically a long pole with a thing at the end like a blender and you stick it down into a layer of compost and just turn it. It's pretty easy. I also spray the top of my compost bin every once in a while (about once a week when it's really hot since I'm in Florida), but don't use a lot of water. I water it with my watering can just enough to make the top layer wet, and I only water when I have paper on top. Never food scraps. It's working well for me.

Are you able to collect compost tea? How if you can?

Asked by imee June 14, 2017

Answers

I make compost tea by filling a burlap bag with the compost (can use cheesecloth but its more costly) and soak it in a bucket of water for 4-7 days. The water becomes black and rich in nutrients. I soak my orchids in this tea and wishing days they are sprouting new flower stalks. I also give a good watering to my shrubs and perennials each spring. They thank me with magnificent blooms and healthy leaves.

No racoons cannot pry open the lid nor the trap door, but they must be put on tightly.

This compost bin doesn't need any kind of complicated assembly. I thought I wanted a rotating bin, but after reading reviews of them that talked about how hard they were to assemble, parts wearing out, and holes in them attracting lots of flies, I changed my mind when I read reviews of this bin. The bin is large and barely fit in my husband's car when we picked it up from Home Depot, so it would be best to use as SUV or truck to bring it home, but beyond that we have had no problems. The lid fits securely so no animals can get in it, and the bin sits unobtrusively in a corner of our yard. Every week we use a pitchfork to turn the compost, and we use a hose to add some water, and it all seems to be working as it should. We have not had it long enough to use the composted material in the garden yet, but are looking forward to doing so!

Just take it out of the box, plop in place and you're ready to make compost. I was pleasantly surprised by its sturdiness.

Composter is very sturdy. I like the bottom door for harvesting. The top opening is a bit small for effective mixing. The lid is a bit tricky to get off but does attach well enough that it doesn't blow off. Looks like it should last for many years.

Not great. Will use it but top does not close solid and had to be secured further to jeep animals out. Would not buy again.
