How do you keep rodents out?

Before putting down the composter, I place on the soil, a layer of small grid wire mesh. Failure to do this means moles and rats will burrow from underneath and eat all the good stuff before it can become compost.

is this compost bin suitable for grass clippings and leaves?

As long as you haven't treated your grass and leaves with harmful chemicals, it would be okay to put them in. You wouldn't want to throw compost in your vegetable garden with chemicals not made to be ingested, for example.

You have to buy a compost turner/aerator separately. This doesn't turn or roll.

Will the compost smell?

Asked by kondrik September 16, 2015

Answers

Mine is about 20 feet from the house. The only time that I can smell it is when I'm next to it with the lid open but that's to be expected. It does attract a lot of fruit flies if you are composting fruits & vegetables so be prepared for that when you open the lid.

does it keep bears out?

Nothing will stop a determined bear. That said, this has a robust one piece build with a screw on lid. You do stake it into the ground. More than likely a bear would push this over before it would destroy it. We have allot of bears where I live and I have had no problems- so far.... You never know with bears....

This compost bin doesn't need any kind of complicated assembly. I thought I wanted a rotating bin, but after reading reviews of them that talked about how hard they were to assemble, parts wearing out, and holes in them attracting lots of flies, I changed my mind when I read reviews of this bin. The bin is large and barely fit in my husband's car when we picked it up from Home Depot, so it would be best to use as SUV or truck to bring it home, but beyond that we have had no problems. The lid fits securely so no animals can get in it, and the bin sits unobtrusively in a corner of our yard. Every week we use a pitchfork to turn the compost, and we use a hose to add some water, and it all seems to be working as it should. We have not had it long enough to use the composted material in the garden yet, but are looking forward to doing so!

Just take it out of the box, plop in place and you're ready to make compost. I was pleasantly surprised by its sturdiness.

Composter is very sturdy. I like the bottom door for harvesting. The top opening is a bit small for effective mixing. The lid is a bit tricky to get off but does attach well enough that it doesn't blow off. Looks like it should last for many years.

Great size, easy to assemble, a little deep, need to really "get in there" to stir, but otherwise, really great!
